Hi everyone! This video is a bit different than you're used to, it's a PODCAST style video - so no visual aids or cutting. Feel free to use google to look up the boats we are talking about. ;) Thanks for watching, and much love! LMK if you dig this stuff, I've got quite a few podcasts saved up from many different sailors.

I thought it was a lovely sailing boat and just a pleasure! It was a very sweet boat .

Two captains experienced in sinking their boats. Unironically this is a wealth of information because you don't have to experience the worst scenario to appreciate the wisdom of those who have lived through it. I remember Plukky and Margarida waist high in their cat trying to salvage what they could. Pay attention to these guys and maybe avoid heartache yourselves. Good one guys.

Though neither of these guys lost their boats for the reasons they are painting against production cats. Not that I disagree with them.
James thrashed his Cat (sailed too hard he admits as must about 6 months prior) in the year or so proceeding it cracking up and Plucky was negligent. Plucky would have known Australia's coast line is very much un surveyed in the more remote areas. Don't get me wrong I like these guys but you have to call it for what it is.

We were right there with them . How exciting . Plus their crews are such fun . Plukky fix your lights . James keep looking for your weak link .

Very nice. Thanks guys. One absolute truism on boats is “ everything is a trade off. Another is: don’t wait too damn long saving or building the perfect boat. Get out there!! I started cruising part time, 6 mo. A year, on a 25K dollar Alberg 35. Then full time an $85k Kelly Peterson 44, then a $73k Cal 2-46. Put at least another $10k in each. They were all old but good boats. I actually sold them for more than I paid for them initially.
BUT! I got out cruising when I was still young enough to really do it and enjoy it. You DON’T need to spend $2, 3, 400K to go cruising. In our early 40’s my wife and I said “hey there is more to life than making money. Lets GO! We quit at the height of our careers and never looked back. And when is the last time that you saw a Hearst, towing a trailor full of “stuff”. You can’t take it with you.
Great channels, both of you. Keep it up! Thanks. PS. And yes, you need to keep a multi light. Load them up and you loose both speed and seaworthiness. Not good. And I could never afford a really nice multi so………. Stayed with monos.

What a blast watching you two prattle on! You guys are two of the best sailing vlogs in my opinion, your content got me through a protracted battle with Covid, and the whole nearly dying bit combined with watching you sail led me to the decision that it’s time to simplify life and learn to sail before I’m too old or dead from some random virus.

This might be one of the most iconic sit-down sailing interviews on RUclips. I could not agree more on the fly-bridge cats. Makes no sense on a sailboat to put your helm up high on the boat. Thanks for a VERY informative video!

Totally agree with you re your evaluation of production cats. My boat was a Pescott 11.7 Whitehaven cat--australian designed and built in WRC. She had outboards in pods which didn't wash directly over the rudders and to be frank, it didn't matter much, I could put her wherever i wanted. I loved it because it was simple and sailed like the wind.

Fact check guys. The catamaran that capsized in northern nsw with fatalities was not a Lagoon. It was a performance oriented design with dagger boards. You can clearly see on RUclips both the rescue footage and subsequent wreckage . To the credit of design or that of builder, it was found 6 months later still afloat. Obviously that didn’t prevent the sad loss of life in this case.

I watched a video from the current owner of that boat, amazing how it was found at sea and what little work it took to get her seaworthy.
edit- I may be thinking of a different case, the one I watched was about a Chris White Atlantic 72', ironically it has the front helm that Plukky was very critical of.

    Hi guys, love your work.
Since the Covid thing my wife an I went from a small mono to a 40’x 20’ plywood glass over late 80’s AU/NZ design Hitchhiker catamaran.
This thing was build like a brick shithouse.
It needed work, to say the least, but it’s rig was solid (2013 cutter rig with Doyle sails).
I even have the original plans on board with full size templates.
I payed $50k AU for her, I bought new engines, 2 x 25 hp outboards and upgraded everything myself.
18 months later and 5.5 months cruising from GC to The Kepples no problems. Even reefed she’ll smash out 9- 10 knots and can sail 45 apparent.
The biggest challenge I find right now is comprehensive insurance, which you need to haul out or tuck into a marina from time to time.
So all systems a gold now and we are having trouble getting insurance because they don’t seam to like non production boats.
If you guys want some plans I have them. The time and $$$ these guys are spending repairing these production boats, you can own a sailing tank with full systems and awesome rigging/sails hydraulic steering. 1400 watts power, Watermaker induction cooking and coffee machine for $130k AU
Just agreeing with Clucky on the Mumby👍.
There are cheep ways to do cat cruising. Just just have to put up with some snobs who think they are better because they have a production cat. When in fact the devaluation of the production boat is what we are out here for, ten years earlier than most.
    Just saying🇦🇺😎

I have been delivering sailboats for much of my life and have sailed all sorts of boats. I am a monohull sailor through and though, mostly because of comfort and safety. Catamarans are ok but absolutely awful going upwind in a big sea. Get on a cat if you want to be seasick. I did have a good time on a French Fontaine Pajot, 55 ft that behaved very well and it was well built. The only other time was on a little Gemini 105, trans Pacific, small, light and nimble, retractable dagger boards and rudders, it drew less than twelve inches and narrow enough to fit into a regular sized slip in a marina. That buggah was fast!! Thanks for the 'Podcast', interesting to hear your comments. Aloha James.

Right People! We have never owned a cat, but we have owned boats for 55 years and put on 35K ocean miles in the last ten years. We have only been passed by two cats ever in our 49' mono and both were all carbon fiber. We usually walk on cats during passages. We have less drag in light air and in heavy air the cats have to slow down to minimize the slap on bridge deck. Most of the cat owners we have spoken too are in love with their cats. But we have met two honest owners and long range sailors with opinions that make sense. They both say that they would much rather sail a monohull, but that they spend 75% if their cruising time at anchor and the cat is a superior living platform. So, I guess it makes a difference what is more important to you.

For the Mumby or Cyber 48 check out ‘life on Jupiter’ … I’m sold on those but the Garcia ExploCat all aluminum catamaran is a lil more expensive than the Mumby but it’s more dressed out … few years ago the Alu Marine out of France made some big aluminum cats that where charter boats mostly and some are still around .. I have to say I’d rather have the Neel 51 trimaran except their quality control fittings out the boat is lacking but the sailing characteristics are great either into or down wind ..

I consider networking one of the greatest tools cruisers have. If you were going to a country for the first time if you can check with others that are comming back from there as to what to expect. To buy a catamaran cost more than a monohull. So if a Morgan sails like a brick, and don't trade up to a Lagoon, and get a gold brick. Thanks for the info.

  • @californiakayaker

Wow, just saw the owners of a Lagoon 410 say they had a broken bulkhead on Parlay's most recent "diamond pattern non skid" at 8 min 21 seconds. Wow. Its all over the Lagoon Cats, same construction practices on all of them apparently ! Maybe we will see more on the Lagoon 410 from them.

Hey, shit those impersonations were very good, haha! About cats, to me they were made for idling around and partying in an anchorage or Lagoon. Initially they never had a kicking strap like a monohull has, so could not sail close to the wind. My experience was with a Dean Cat 36 ft with 2 Yanmar 19hp engines in it, sailing from Durban to Cape St Francis in the Mozambique current at 7 knots plus 3 knots current speed, with 30 ft swell behind you! Initially not fun at all, more like fighting for survival scenario! (It did not have a kicking strap). Had to steer all the way, as the weight on the belt for the autopilot was too much for it to work, as it was slipping! I have sailed dingies my whole life, since the age of 5, and was taught that ocean cats were actually dogs in the water! I felt that for myself! You cannot choose the cabin at the bow, otherwise you are in the air most of the time,.So glad that you brought this subject up. All good, and wouldn't mind meeting up with you both sometime. Enjoy the festive season. Take care.

I agree lagoons are pump sailed on a few well it didn't feel like sailing at all. My current boat is a lightweight build been through heavy weather, orca attacks and a pirate attack of cap manuel outside Dakar. I'm surprised it's still functional. Currently waiting and fixing the boat in the gambia mangroves system lots of malaria and crocs. 😂 But perfect sandbanks if you don't have the boat yard.

Good stuff boys. I went from mono hull to cat and now you guys got me thinking mono again.
Mumby 48 looks solid. I think there's a guy in Cebu building those right?

Interesting that Plucky talked about having to always change the sails on his cat in squals, Riley from Plucky's favourite sailing chanel was just talking in their latest video about just running off 30 degrees in squals to lower the apparent wind then coming back up afterwards - might reflect the different types of cat.

wonderful chat, very entertaining and informative. You two could improve ship design and have affect on responsible engineering. Hulls are for sleeping, no windows no openings. Good on ya mates. Girls and morning sickness

See, that problem of swapping rudder and prop around, among other things, clearly shows the advantage of having a couple retractable generator-powered electric motor pods powering the props. The pods could be mounted on conventional stern-drive legs, but be able to rotate around 360 degrees to any azimuth. Rudders synch'd to each pod azimuth. A single engine and generator could be mounted centrally anywhere for optimal weight balance, weight and cost savings, and a stiff electricity source for house use. 600 volt cables run port & stbd to power the pods. No 12v DC junk anywhere, and only 24v DC or compressed air to crank over the engine and small 24v DC bank as house power backup. No shaft through-hulls, no cutlass bearings, no leaks, no paths for lightning. Most house loads would be 220 v AC single-phase, all big motors 600v 3-phase.

You make alot of good points, I've been thinking very much along those lines myself lately. I spend alot of time configuring just how I want to power my next cat (which will be electric) and I just don't see alot of advantage to conventional inboard designs whether diesel or electric for all the reasons you listed and too many others.

Plucky & James, some of the last channels out there that are still doing it for real besides Colin.

In complete agreement here with Plucky on all the design safety points. If I win Powerball next week and order any of the new production monohulls I would stipulate they leave the hull uncut. Rectangular holes in the side of a hull are just wrong. Even if they showed me excellent calculations and glue specifications proving that it's the strongest part of the boat ( _and if it were why don't they build the whole boat out of that_) it would always look and feel like a stress point and I would always wonder how well the glue was mixed and applied and what time is doing to it.
And as for those marina cats - I just wouldn't go to sea on a houseboat.
