I just recently got done with a "Digital Documentary" school assignment, and now have a newfound appreciation for how well done this is. I really enjoyed it! Super fun! I too call the 2018 Grinch "the new one" even if it is by no definition, "new"
The most interesting thing for me about the Illumination one is that rather than being an abused pet, Max is the one other being the Grinch shows actual love and affection for, so Max is totally ride or die for his master - his reaction to having to pull the sled rather than a real reindeer is key to this. Other adaptions see it and go "Oh no, this is going to be hard..." but Illumination's Max is more "Alright, BRING IT ON!" and excited by the challenge. Max doesn't care what happens to christmas, all he cares is that the Grinch is happy whatever happens, and that's the most fascinating aspect of that movie to me. Similarly I feel the Jim Carrey Horton Hears A Who movie to the a stronger story than the original book for me because in the original book Jojo was such a nothing character - his character as the smallest who was a total moron who didn't seem to notice or care about massive disasters befalling their hometown, I don't think they even had a name. Then when time's at a crunch they still take forever when they know the stakes. I hated that kid when I got around to watching the original short after watching the movie.
i cant express how satisfying it was to finally see an analysis on the similarities / differences between the 3 films, i was trying to explain aspects of it after watching all 3 by chance with my family last year and its interesting to hear another take on it
In the 2000 movie with Jim Carrey as the Grinch, Augustus and Whobris are the Gaston and LeFou in this movie, same way the Grinch is the Beast, both Martha and Cindy are Belle, and Lou Lou Who is Maurice. How the Grinch Stole Christmas = Beauty and the Beast

I really don’t like that they changed the whos to be mean and gross in the 2nd movie. I’ve never liked this adaptation as a result.
