  • Paul and Emma here with an exciting product launch from Kodak 🎞️
    Bringing film with you on your travels is essential to capturing your wonderful holiday moments and memories. But travelling with film internationally can come with its own stresses, with the potential damage that airport security can do to your films, especially with new CT scanners being introduced.
    Kodak have launched some travel merchandise prototypes to hopefully make your journeys with film run more smoothly. They have produced an x-ray warning travel sticker and film case. These designs come with all the warnings and information needed to safely take your film through security checks ⚠️
    These products are now live on our website at a discounted rate. We are selling them in the hopes to get some feedback from the community. So please take them on your travels, snap some fantastic photos and let us know how you get on with them! We will be sending out a feedback form for any one who purchases a case or sticker, and we appreciate any reviews left on our website too.

    I usually carry my film in a small red drybag as it can clip on to the outside of my rucksack for easy removal in the security lines. I then unclip it and pass it to a security worker so they can hand check it. I have then been asked to open the film boxes up to check what's inside, to which I said no because it's then not factory sealed, so I won that fight!
    The bag is a nice idea, my only comment would be to have a loop or clip separate to the zip so it can be clipped on and off quickly without rummaging through your bag to take it out in a busy queue. It's nice to see this issue being addressed though as multiple passes though various scanners can cumulatively impact film!

    Something that I think could help. Would be adding little qr code. That would take you to page with a language option with the same info. Avoid issues with counties where English isn’t commonly spoken

    I just tried with a printed Kodak “do not scan” label A4 sized in a large clear A4 wallet with 12 rolls. Got through Heathrow (t4), Dubai and most surprisingly Brunei with all agreeing to a hand check without issue. All had the old style scanners (from what I could tell) but still agreed to a hand check.

    I could have done with this earlier in the month. Maybe. I’ve sent 7 films to you so you will be the first to see if I should have had one of these. I had no idea scanners had been upgraded. Fingers crossed for the batch I sent to you and hopefully I’ll have a bag by September (if you still have any).

      I'm sure your films will be fine :) I think CT scanners are being introduced gradually, but aren't in all airports yet. Hopefully there will be a new and improved design ready for your next trip!

    It's a great idea because it does offer convenience and some additional credibility. But security at Heathrow told me that their policy is to hand inspect film ONLY with an ISO greater than (or equal to) 800. And I certainly recommend not trying to argue... as I did!

    • @AnalogueWonderland
      @AnalogueWonderland  Год назад

      Yes, in general only films with a higher ISO will be effected by xrays. But when the new CT scanners come in, they could have a more damaging effect to all film types, so hopefully these designs will be ready for then. We don't want to cause any arguments with security either 😂

    Good idea, I purposely haven't taken my film camera with me this year (I only started shooting film this year). We cruise a lot so every time you get on and off, your stuff goes through x-ray. Sometimes this is on the ship by ships security which I don't think would ever be a problem, but sometimes its local security at the port so its not just airport security that needs to know about this.

    • @AnalogueWonderland

    The pencil case is a better idea. The sticker can get wet, rip, etc. It is good that it is in different languages. If you have a camera, that is loaded with film, maybe there's a way this can be also bagged up in the same way.

    • @AnalogueWonderland
      @AnalogueWonderland  Год назад

      Good points, a more durable sticker might be a better option, but the pencil case will work great in these scenarios too :)

  • @teleaddict23

    I could’ve done with that sticker back in May when I flew to Brazil. But I actually didn’t have any trouble at all going through 3 airports. Luckily the TSA guards were very obliging. Each time I typed a message on my phone and translated it into the country’s language. It seemed to work. There was a frightening moment when I was coming back and the last airport, Amsterdam, had new CT scanners. The guard was insisting everything went through. Having made it this far, if he had refused to hand check my film, all my five rolls would be ruined. I did the phone trick and showed him the message on my phone in Dutch which he understood. I think people need to be prepared with their messages in different languages for guards to fully understand otherwise you may have problems.

    • @AnalogueWonderland
      @AnalogueWonderland  Год назад

      A good tip there! I'm glad your film made it through safely, language barriers can certainly be an issue, and we are hoping these designs will help :)

  • @EddieCheng81
    @EddieCheng81 Год назад +1

    I would love to have this in other languages besides western languages - Japanese, Korean and Chinese (simplified and Traditiona) would be great additions. Also, the smaller instruction text on the pouch is sort of hard to read due to the horizontal and vertical white lines with black text, perhaps they can be bigger to help.

    • @AnalogueWonderland
      @AnalogueWonderland  Год назад

      Yes certainly, I believe the plan is to expand the language options so film shooters across the world can use them! Great feedback, we totally agree on that visual aspect :)

    Heathrow will flat refuse to hand inspect film unless it’s 800 ISO or faster. I’ve resorted to using a lead lined film bag which is scanned next to hand luggage. No probs so far.

  • @chrispatmore8944
    @chrispatmore8944 Год назад +1

    Whatever happened to the special lead-lined film bags we used to use in the 1970s and 80s? Whenever I was travelling I’d chuck all the film in those, usually one for exposed and one for unexposed, then just leave them in the luggage. No worries.

    My experience is that it is a matter of luck whether a security guard will allow hand-scanning of film and invariably they are under pressure to get people flowing through the x-ray machines. However I have found that the managers who 'know the rules' will invariably insist that films

    • @AnalogueWonderland
      @AnalogueWonderland  Год назад

      Yes, agree on that- can be a matter of pot luck! There is a lot of work going on behind the scenes in the film community to try and help set an industry standard at airport security, so hopefully in the future there will be a clearer understanding and it won't be as tricky for film shooters to travel with film! :)

  • @theflyingmikey

    This is absolutely fantastic and I'm glad someone is tackling the joys of travelling with film! I've been using the Analog Held 35mm case for travelling and having the "caution film, do not x-ray" in multiple languages is really useful when there's a language barrier.
    What I will say is that pictures say a thousand words and the colourful and clear little image on the back of the AH case is fantastic for when you go somewhere with a lesser spoken language (e.g. Norway, Denmark, Greece etc).
    Also, whilst these are being produced, could a slightly smaller, amended one be created for putting on parcels for those that send them off to film labs that covers something similar but also about not letting it get wet or squished, and an area to write a return address on in case the film gets lost in the post?

I got and still have a Sima Super Film Sheild, it's a double thick lead laminated pouch. Iused to put my film in it and then into my case, these days I use it to keep my keyless device for my car in it, stops car theives from grabing the signal. Neat idea but unfortunately won't change the fact that film nowadays seems to be something that comes from Mars that many of the security folks have never seen. I tried to prevent a film going through one of these newer scanners in the Dublin airport recently and after a long back and forth I was told to hold it in my hand as I went through the security arch only to find the guy at the other end wanting to open the roll fully to see what was inside!!! The roll was in the original box that says it's film, etc etc and took quite a bit of convincing to prevent the guy from destroying the film!! :( I've decided now to allow it to go through the scanner and travel only with ISO 100 (125) at most and push it if I have not enough light.

    In working at the camera for 33 years, and traveling more then that I have heard all the horror stories, even though that we sold X-Ray Tape for the Motion Pictures shooters. even in 1992 I brought close to 182 rolls for my trip to Japan, and place them into a Large Ziplock bag with the X-Ray tape stickers all over the bag, But No they place the film inside the scanner - however I was running out of film, and had to buy more film so I started with 182, but came back with 340 ROLLS in coming back, as my fried that I was staying with told me Good Luck in going through the customs, Well I had my film in just a regular Brown Paper bag as the customs officer seen my camera gear, and he had respect, that he took the bag, and over the scanner, and I clear free. My film was process all was good, But I might of gotten the security customs in trouble. But as for Today with the Homeland security Still will not honor the hand inspected - As if you pleaed or cry or show them the copy on the invoice spending $$$$ of rolls of film they are not going to honor it. As thye will tell you that it is Safe - Don;t believe it!! As on my last trip to Japan in 2017 as I had some expired film just over a year old, and did take it to Japan, and when I came back that the colors, and contrast was very Low, and colors muted, So why bother with those X-Ray bags, they will not work, as you place your film in those bags that TSA will boosted the scanners to BROIL until or film becomes tonight's London Broil Roast. As the TSA staff will not or NEVER will listen to you as that I might of have to buy my film when I do travel, and have it shipped it back to my home or the lab that I deal with. And with the problems with Today's TSA More regulations, and restrictions in bringing on the plane for check in that it is a JOKE, and not to mention the airlines problems with flight cancellations, and delays, and also passengers with Mental Health Problems, and also Bad Taste in clothing, and Butt cracks. So why bother with the X-Ray Bags, and Stickers....

    Manchester airport give zero 💩 no desire to listen ....
    Germany was great . No language barrier or desire to do anything other than assists and highlighted its culture not technical superiority thats the problem in the uk ... Also id want several of those or. A bigger bag ...
    Uk manchester ... Superiors flaunting degrees in art to suggest "its your lucky day I'm here" when the result is scanning film anyway ...
    And finally they scanned everythijg up to 800 and then walked the 3200 round and didnt actually hand check drug or explosive substance test the 3200 ...
    My argument ... You could have done that with all film ...
    My solution would be name and shame and start demo strating that its individuals or specific airports and let the reputation reflect on them until they realise this is a movement that theyre not in control of ...
    Frankly thinking the xrays wont damage is naiive ... Ive been lucjy that film was only scanned once but for frequent travel over time you will get base fog so travelling with film is still difficult .
    I currently attempts to buy at destinatioj and have no problem comong back with film ...
