I still love the big rotary temperature controls on my E82 135i. So clicky and satisfying to use.
Losing the idrive control and manual temperature controls seems like such a step backward and makes me want to hang onto my current X1 a while longer.

Carwow's review of new Mercedes C63 the other day where Mercedes' PR manager.. Matt really missed an opportunity to bring the issue straight to their face and see their argumentation in unedited video.

I'm ordering one an X1 based on this review. Out the door just over $50k with the M sport mode and performance tires. I like that the X1 does not feel top heavy like most SUVs, so the driving dynamics are much more like a car. Modern with good gas mileage, with decent acceleration (under 6 sec 0 to 60), and mildly luxurious interior. And the length makes it very easy to park in the city.

Autogefuhl is king of timestamps. There's no other youtube chanel that uses so many of them in a single video.I would prefer less, it's hard to navigate with so many because of how short many of them are. One for intro, one of interior, one for exterior and one for driving experience.

I've just ordered an iX1 M Sport from Pelras Toulouse having already seen the car at Goodwood FoS. It was the most difficult car ever to spec e.g to have the induction phone charging I had to buy the Premium pack at €2100 and I must then pay another €800 for active cruise or €350 for heated seats after I have taken delivery. I really think BMW should re-think this strategy..it's too greedy. Nevertheless, I can't wait to get my new car next March.

    • @duncangrant4580

Just ordered an X1 Sport here in the UK and I feel your frustration! I wanted the anti-dazzle internal and extenral mirrors, but to get that I would have to buy a £1,600 package with mostly features that I do not need or want. I also wanted the heated steeering wheel and can only get that through a package too (plus a later subscription fee too!) and yet, for example, I could specify heated seats as a single option. Crazy! Still, great car and can't wait to get behind the wheel!

The air vents look unharmonic - the one in the center and the ones in front of the passenger aren't in the same height but are too closely placed and just look out of place. Otherwise Thomas - great review, as always on point and very informative.

The touchscreen climate controls on the new X1 are a deal-breaker. I would never buy a car that didn’t enable me to easily control the aircon while driving. It’s too distracting and dangerous to use a screen. Physical knobs and buttons are so much better and safer.
PS: Thanks for the great review Thomas!

    • @far_tech5555
      @far_tech5555 2 года назад +2

Although I agree the physical buttons or knobs are easier and less distracting, I prefer the button-less approach of the new models because of the nodern design language. I always use auto climate so I don't need to manual control the climate that often. Also, I hope the voice command does the job for these kinds of stuff.
My current car has all the climate controls as physical buttons, but if I want to change some settings, I still need to have a quick look . So having buttons doesn't necessarily remove the necessity of taking your eyes from the road.
But it is totally subjective if this is a deal breaker for you and I won't argue that

I have a 2022 M4 coupe, but this would be such a great daily driver, for getting groceries, city, small road trips. These 19" rims are the way to go, too. Best balance between sidewall and rim size. I don't think I would go with the 20" ones just because the purpose of this car is able to handle some rougher roads, I don't want to worry about low profile tires on my crossover.

IX1 is on preorder. What I didn't like about this car was the lack of wheel options in the order. The Msport starts with 18inch in my country. I don't like the style of 19 inch and 20inch is not comfy and also expensive to upgrade.

Meaning, without too much zoom, just from various different sides and more in the city (for example when you are parking it between the two cars, which will show how it looks compared with its size to other cars, or how easy is it turning in tight corners/streets), just to simulate a bit how it looks in the real world instead of watching primarily you in the interior.

What gearbox did the 23i had? I see in the BMW configurator there are 2 options for the transmission: DCT (probably 7speed) or "automatic" (I guess the 8speed ZF gearbox). 300euros more for de 8speed auto. Finally some really thight and good looking stearing wheels from BMW. Best I've seen in a long time. Shame they've removed the iDrive controller as well as temperature and volume knob tho. Great review!

    1. Thomas, are you sure you have enough legroom in the front? When driving your knees looked high/close to the dashboard.
    2. Is there a PHEV for the X1? Comparable to the upcoming Tonale PHEV?

I really think this is the way to go. Bmw really made a good decision. I think the i am a ev look is just a trend and i don’t like it. To me evs are not really the i am sustainable so i am the future thing. But really the x1 and ix1 really are good looking cars and how bmw handelt it is really good. This is the car that are the engines you pick what you want the car is the same

Is BMW considered a premium brand in Germany like it is in other markets?

They've always made some affordable vehicles (smaller in size). This never had a negative effect on sales of the other models. I welcome less snobbism, or better yet, no snobbism any day.

Fantastic review, but you didn't touch on one thing that may allay the worries people have about there being no I-drive wheel, which is the voice control option. I took an X1 for a test drive the other day and tested this function. I did two tests, speaking in my normal voice (with has a slight Yorkshire accent) at normal volume and intonation.
First test: "Play radio 2" and sure enough, 'Radio 2' was selected for me.
Second test: "Raise the temperature" - response from Idrive was "what would you like me to set the driver side temperature to?" "22" I responded and in less than a second, '22' appeared on the screen.
I presently drive an Active Tourer (2019) and the voice control in that is disappointing. I would say BMW have definitely improved voice recognition ins version 8 Idrive software, as the X1 I test drove responded to both my requests without having been 'trained' to recognise my voice, so it would seem to work as well as, say, Alexa.

What's weird about X1s is that they look way bigger than they are. Those are not much taller than 3 series , doubt they are longer or wider, ground clearance is very car like too, the only reason it exist is because ppl judge books by the cover , believe " suv " is by default a safer and a higher end product than a car.

huge miss on the underfloor storage. the 1st gen has a huge underfloor storage and you can fit a carry on 22" luggage plus a duffle bag in that underfloor compartment

Great helpful review! If BMW will start making their steering more soft and light like MB, Volvo...then, it's not BMW anymore:( BMW was unique manufacturer letting driver and the car be like one whole connected ultimate driving machine. Good to know that no more actual buttons for driving modes, climate controls.. touch screen will distract from driving to change every single settings.

Ah, the old style door handles where you pull up, instead of door handles that you pull out. Personally, I think the pull out handles are easier to use when one has their hands full, but it's not a big deal.

To be fair, my wife's had a couple occurrences of an Android Auto connection issue with her G20 330i. It just disconnected on its own, and we were unable to get it reconnected. It suddenly started working again after a couple of days. So that issue is not necessarily new.
