I eat spicy food every day and I can attest to the endorphins. It's actually exciting followed by a calming effect. I personally believe it is like cold water immersion or a trip to the sauna- it's an acute stress that calms you after.

I’ve had them. I don’t love the taste, myself, but they’re real spicy!
I like the New Orleans Voodoo Ghost Pepper chips (whatever their official name is). Strangely, they don’t seem very spicy. I really like Takis
      for _spicy_ chips.
(the blue ones are too spicy for me to eat much)
I forgot which they were, but there was 1 brand & flavor that was just too spicy for me, altogether.

Spicy food isn’t good for you. Spicy food has been shown to cause early onset dementia in southeast Asians who consume it most. It’s a drug and triggers dopamine. Making you stupid.

This has been a suspicion of mine for several years if not a couple of decades. Being from India, I can’t help but love spice and heat.

It sounds like Dr. Greger is endorsing the consumption of curry. You can get turmeric, red pepper, ginger, garlic, black pepper, onion, cumin, and more all in one curry.

Thank you for this info Dr Greger! About 15 years ago I couldn't even handle 1-star spiciness, but since then have developed liking for the stuff. Had no idea or intention, just had a partner who cooked this way. Never thought he wanted it for my benefit, quite the opposit, kept accusing him of wanting to kill me 🤣

I’ve heard people accuse fitness trainers of the same thing, lol 😂
Sometimes, stuff that’s good for us is difficult or even painful. There’s a quote that sounds something like that, but it’s been too long.

Thanks for the info on the Pepper Spray! The Spicy food as well but I love supporting standing up for our rights so it was enjoyable to hear you go off script a bit! I'll use the food info much more than the pepper spray info but during this upside down World, good to be prepared!

I've never taken Prozac or anything like it, but I often state that spicy food puts me in my "Happy Place." Hot peppers, especially jalapenos are my personal Prozac. That is not why I eat them though. I eat them because I love them.
I like your fact based style, Dr. Greger. Keep up the good work.

Thanks a lot. You persuaded me. Since I am afraid of all the added things in commercially produced vinegar and soy source, and I don't know how to ferment my own. All my fermentation projects went very bad. SoI have to cut them out enterely eventually. So I decide to train myself to use hot spices to spice up my meals. After some very hot pepper, all I want to do is to eat 10 blocks of sweet potatos to regain balance. God bless!

When I first tried sprinkling Dash on some of my vegetables, I was taken aback by its spiciness (from cayenne pepper). But I stuck with it and eventually developed such a taste for it that I now use several times the suggested serving. Glad to hear it's so healthful!

I have always loved spicy food. I got more into it because hot sauce was something I could add to food that added flavor without adding many calories. I love trying new hot sauces or cooking with different kinds of peppers.
Btw Pepper X was recently named the hottest pepper by Guinness World Records. It is about 2.7 million SHU 🥵

I'm that girl that uses chili powder, jalapenos, curry powder, sriracha chili sauce, and spicy mustards every single day. Sometimes, all within the same meal. I grew up with a British & Scandinavian background in eastern North Dakota, where the majority of the food is notoriously bland and without any sort of kick. These days though, I like to say: spicy food = spicy life.

I got a huge craving for spicy food when my IBD (UC) got out of control. Most people would say to avoid it like the plague, but i started adding tons of hot sauce to everything. Since then the vast majority of my symptoms and pain have been reduced and I'm at the level of pepper x and Carolina reaper sauce with every meal. It seems to be too good to be true? But studies are matching and confirming my experiences, which is the balance of the gut microbiome and pain relief. I don't know where this craving came from but I'm real glad I trusted it.

There’s a guy on RUclips named Houston Jones, who ate pure capsaicin powder (for science). The top of his tongue rotted and it took a while for it to heal.
I think he said it’s the worst thing he’s ever done. He’s done a lot of painful things.
He also ate other spicy things, plus some ‘different’ foods (separately).

Anecdotally speaking, it does bring down my stress levels. Once you get into the habit of making everything spicy, any spice-free recipe would fail to give the same kick. At the time, it kinda felt like a drug. Also, it really helps with pain management, eye strain, gut motility, numbing grief etc. I just can’t live without it! I wondered if it would cause neurological issues down the lane, because people (especially Indians) give off the impression that spice is evil and overstimulates the system! But in reality, I had a great relationship with all kinds of spices because it allowed me to maintain a steady state with respect to several biomarkers. On the contrary, my father is incapable of tolerating spice, while I just can’t get enough of its dosage. Another trick is to ferment the spicy recipes, whereby the benefit of the kick is experienced without the nerve hammering. Happy to hear more from an unbiased audience that is less succumb to beliefs and keen on challenging folklore and mythology.

I think citric acid does the same thing as red pepper powder in terms of tricking your taste buds. I learned that accidentally in my kitchen, ha ha ha what I do is cut up, Serano peppers and red onions and keep it in white vinegar. I Dowsett over my food. I also give a sofa roofing punch which is soaking black mustard seeds in vinegar and using that over foods as well. I don’t know I do all the right things but I still don’t seem to lose weight. Perhaps I have to cut down on the chocolates.

I use fresh ground peppercorns (all varieties) everyday and ground cayenne almost daily. I eat a lot of eggs and I love copious amounts of pepper on them. I've known about the health benefits for years which is why I started using more pepper and less salt in the first place, but now I just love the flavor enhancing effect pepper has on pretty much any food. I buy mixed peppercorns by the pound!

Gimmee a break. If there is actually a benefit to eating cayenne peppers, there is no need for WILD speculation on why that benefit occurs.
