    I’m so obsessed with the story of Mary Queen of Scots. This was absolutely great.

    I think Mary has been treated unfairly in many portrayals. Comparing her reign to that of Elizabeth does her an injustice. Elizabeth inherited a throne that was relatively stable. Her councillors were loyal to the Crown and their country. Elizabeth had trusted advisors like William Cecil and Walsingham. When Mary returned to Scotland she returned to a land in religious turmoil. The hypocrite John Knox railed against her from the pulpit from the start. She had no trustworthy councillors. Her half brother James had his own ambitions. Her other councillors placed family considerations above loyalty to the Crown. Some were in English pay. There is no doubt that Mary made some bad decisions, particularly those after the birth of her son. However, I wonder how Elizabeth would have fared if she had been Queen of Scots? How would Elizabeth have coped with the murder of her favourite so violently right in front of her? Would Elizabeth have been able to ride through the night while 6 months pregnant to escape Rizzio’s murderers? Would she then have been able to put her half brother to flight? Could Elizabeth have escape imprisonment so many times and fought on? Some of Mary’s worst decisions were made when she was most vulnerable and without loyal council, after the birth of her child and following her miscarriage. Once in England Mary had to endure a fake trial for the murder of Darnley. Were the Casket letters forgeries? Even after the show trial she was kept in prison. The thing Elizabeth did handle considerably better was the risk to her crown following the suspicious death of Amy Robsart. I think for the most part the situations of the rival queens cannot be so easily compared. They came into power in completely different circumstances and In completely different environments.

    Who else loves the various makeup Alice wears? It's expertly applied, bold, stunning and she pulls it off exceptionally well. She is absolutely beautiful.
    If I wore that same makeup, I'd look bloody foolish but I adore seeing those who can pull it off do it and do it well. Her hair color is also exceptional! ❤❤❤

    Just saw it, excellent! So much information and detail in a relatively short sitting. There are certain areas in her tragic life that could be expanded on but you articulated all the significant events that brought her to great prominence and unfortunate outcomes that sealed her fate.

    Another fantastic piece. Mary, Queen of Scots is one of those fascinating figures. Though, tragic she was made stronger by all the hardships she had to deal with including her own cousin locking her up. I have to think Mary felt a little betrayed by that. She came to England thinking Elizabeth would protect her as a fellow Queen and a relative and so being imprisoned instead must have been a shock

    If Mary had adopted a little more of Elizabeth's ruthlessness & dealt with the misogynistic men in her life directly, instead of trying to be diplomatic & if Elizabeth could have had more of Mary's open-mindedness (& put aside her own jealousy) to name Mary as her successor, history would have been much different.

    Thank you for another great video, @Alice of Sherwood!I found it very entertaining and informative. I'm obsessed with historical time period from about the mid 1400's through Queen Victoria and thought I knew it exceptionally well. I was pleasantly surprised to learn a number of things I previously didn't.

    Also, Jane Dunn wrote a fantastic book examining the Elizabeth - Mary relationship, rivalry, and comparing their approaches to their roles, people, and personal lives.

    This might be an unpopular opinion but I'm going to choose a side here and it's Elizabeth's. I just have no sympathy for Mary Queen of Scots. She was an ineffective ruler with a weak claim to the English throne. If Elizabeth were a Catholic, would Mary have fought so hard for it? What exactly was her intention? The fact that Elizabeth was declared a bastard, then later reinstated to the succession via Henry VIII's will and by act of Parliament, doesn't change the reality that she was his daughter and the next in line for the throne after Mary Tudor died. Mary Stuart's claim was because her grandmother was Henry VIII's sister, Margaret Tudor. In NO way would that make her claim stronger.
    Even then, Elizabeth gave her shelter in England after Mary was forced to abdicate her Scottish throne. Obviously, Elizabeth also did this to keep a close eye on her cousin but she gave her a safe place to live in relative peace and comfort.
    And then Mary involed herself in not one, but THREE plots to assassinate Elizabeth and take her throne. WHERE DID SHE FIND THE AUDACITY?
    Elizabeth literally had no choice. Was she going to keep funding Mary's existence while this bitch was plotting to murder her? She had to sign the warrant. Even though she didn't want to.

      Yup. Mary sucked and lost the Game of Thrones by being literally every bad stereotype that men raised to say why women couldn't rule.

    • @carag2567
      @carag2567 5 месяцев назад

      @@Visplight YES! Excellent point! It's almost like she deliberately tried to prove John Knox right. The only thing she did to fulfill her duties as queen was to give birth to James. And again, because Elizabeth was the smarter and far more adept ruler, she used that to her country's advantage on her deathbed.

    16:16 @Alice of Sherwood what movie/TV show are these scenes from? I've seen Elizabeth R (from which previous footage is shown) but do not recall those. Also curious about where the scenes from 18:16 are from as well!

    So, funny story about John Knox and his big, misogynistic mouth: Elizabeth I was also a favourite target of his But when he was eventually forced to leave Scotland (can't recall why), he actually applied for a job at Elizabeth's court with a letter that more or less said 'women rulers are abominations, but for an abomination you're not too bad." He did not get the job, and wrote to a colleague, reflecting that his sermons against Elizabeth's probably hurt his chances.

    "A male dominated world that didn't believe that women had the ability or right to rule their kingdom"? What? How many men died for these queens? And they only had the choice between two women, either Elizabeth or Mary at the time. What are you talking about? How many men served each queen on account of their god given right to rule, which they acknowledged? The only question of legitimacy was based on religion, not gender. That's why both countries never had the salic primogeniture. These men ,in a world they dominated, specifically allowed women to inherit a throne and a kingdom.
