What a great video. Tbh, I have never played or watched anything from the FF7 franchise, and merely watched this because it was an Infinite Review episode. Despite this, it was a coherent and interesting review. Considering playing the original and remake eventually, once it's done (or more likely, if it's done). It's also pretty nice that you're doing "something else" this video. It's hard to say that, since each and every video you do is different, and I'm already having a hard time explaining to people what your channel is about without just showing them, and now you go and just throw "personal and thoughtful" review of a videogame into the mix.
All the videos you worked on so far have been gold, and this is one isn't any different in that regard.

28:03 - You brought up this point, so I'm going to tell you about my experience with FF7 media.
When I was a kid, Cloud and other FF characters were exposed to me through Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2. Nothing to worry about, I knew they were only cameos. Years later I watched Advent Children and liked it back then but I don't like it now.
Finally, I played the original FF7 for the first ever at the beginning of 2019 and I really enjoyed it, flaws and all. I understood why people love that game. I usually don't have any problems with old games because I like to play them as time capsules. So, I think the plot of FF7 Remake didn't need to become even more convoluted.

I think it says a lot that the most enjoyment I got out of FFVIIR was just walking up the stairs in the Shinra building, and I don't even mean that in a snarky, condescending way. FFVIIR's greatest strength was its characterizations, so it was really refreshing to just have Cloud, Barrett and Tifa interacting with each other at length with no plot ghosts, filler dungeons or Sephiroths interrupting.

Great analysis. On top of the whole Sephiroth debacle, what really irked me is how they fudged the Jenova reveal, which is so important as it is the main antagonist. Very weak first impression compared to how it was originally done; on PS1, while just being a simple container between crates in Hojo's lab, the Jenova money shot was still extremely scary (music playing a big part). This is reinforced with the President assassination part, where you investigate the trails of blood originating from the containment cell (the first use of blood in the game at that point). In Remake, she's too close to her human appearence in the Nibelheim reactor, downplaying her Lovecraftian essence. And of course, the blood got censored by purple sparkling goo. No sword through Shinra either, thanks to a T rating.

  • @hugh5530
    @hugh5530 4 года назад +7

Wow, this was absolutely fantastic! I agree with everything you said - the positives and the negatives. You've perfectly summed up how I feel about this game. I really enjoyed the new combat system, the music, the environments and the characters, but the Hobbit movies level of padding really brought down the whole experience and the story changes were mostly for the worse. I'd just like to mention a couple of extra complaints of my own:
    1. The new content adds very little to the the characters, story or world building. I'm a big fan of the original game and jump at any opportunity to learn more about the lore or characters. Hell, I even enjoyed the other compilation games to a degree despite all the nonsensical story threads (Hojo brain upload, Sephiroth revived from the lifestream etc) because they expanded on the world of FF7 in some interesting ways. However, despite being 10 times longer than the equivalent section in the original game, FF7R tells us very little new information about the world. The side-quests (which you were wise to skip) honestly seem like a lazy afterthought. They could have been used to tell the player more about the world (e.g. “collect herbs to make a medicine that cures mako poisoning to save a child in the slums who got poisoned from eating monster meat”) but instead they're mostly pointless filler like “find 4 kittens”. Even the beautifully realized 3D environments don't tell us a great deal of new information about life in Midgar or the slums. Almost all the posters in the game are for Stamp, Loveless or Shinra corp. Are Stamp and Loveless the only two entertainment properties in the entirety of this world? Surely they could have made a couple of extra jpgs to make the world feel a bit more alive. Also, a small nitpick, but why are the posters in Midgar written in both Japanese and English when all of the characters speak the same language?
    2. The high definition, realistically proportioned character models make the inconsistencies in powers stick out like a sore thumb. In a cut-scene Cloud will jump 10 meters into the air, do a flip and then land on a moving bike. But then when you have control you have to solve ridiculously simple "puzzles" (like pushing a crate, moving the robot arms, platforming as Tifa etc) to help him get over small gaps. The worst case of this is the part you mentioned in the sewers when the monster steals the key. You spend half an hour chasing it just to find out the door was unlocked the whole time (when Cloud could have just kicked the door down regardless). This kind of thing just feels like it's intentionally wasting the player's time.
I totally agree with your conclusion. The most disappointing part about this was that they got so much right. It really does feel like there's a good game hidden under all the filler. I'll reserve judgement for this project as a whole until it's actually finished, but I'm not confident that I will play the sequels unless I hear them praised by other people who didn't feel that Part 1 stuck the landing.

I'm late to the party, but... you said everything I felt so perfectly. And I'm one of those who wanted a remake. It was very cruel. The characters, the combat, the music, the setting, the tone... so well done. And then the story scenario nukes the whole thing.

A lot of this game's flaws probably come from Nomura's influence. He's been doing the exact same thing to Kingdom Hearts for a while now, where each iteration has to up the ante from the previous installment, even if that means missing the point of what made the originals good to begin with and retconning them just to make your newest work seem cooler by comparison. The way no one stays dead in FF7R is a carry-over from how no one stays dead in Kingdom Hearts. There are two KH games that center around killing every member of an evil organization, and it's an excellent part of those games, but they all come back in the sequels so it feels pointless in retrospect. Hell, there's an entire game about a new character who the protagonist spends the game bonding with only to die at the end, but she comes back too. It's trivializing an entire game just because a few fans of this character wanted her back. His style of power creep is like straight out of a shounen anime.

I finally got around to playing this game cause the new one is coming out. Ive always liked your review because it confirmed the impression I got about the game when it first came out, but I always had this thought that "Hey, I didn't play the game. Maybe its not as bad, everyone loves it and it looks real nice. Maybe Owen is just too lost in the FF7 sauce to enjoy the good parts and ignore the rest."
Having now played the game, I can categorically say that its an absolute waste of time. It adds almost nothing to the original while bogging it down with so much time wasting, wheel spinning that I couldnt play it anymore by chapter 12, it was making me miserable. It looks and sounds amazing but theres just so much nothing, even the combat system that everyone raves about didnt work for me, it felt more restrictive than a turn based system and way more clunky than a basic action system. Id rather watch Advent Children on repeat for 40hrs than play any more of the remakes.
Im mostly just leaving this comment because I dont know anyone I can vent to without being told Im no craic and should enjoy the remakes for what they are. Look at how pretty Aeris is, look at how flashy the combos are. The remakes is a Product first and a piece of art a distant second and I dont think Id ever recommend anyone play it, even super fans of the series. FF16 had no rizz but at least it was trying something new, so I guess thats what final fantasy is now. A decent MMO and very ok, very nice looking mainline games.
Ps. Lmao at the Weiss joke, considering they put him in Intermission aparantly? God I didnt think Id ever long for the days Nomura was doing crazy new shit with the franchise instead of this recycled slop.

Worth noting that apparently it was Kitase who wanted more drastic changes while Nomura and Hamaguchi wanted to keep it as close to original as possible. (gamingbolt.com/final-fantasy-7-remakes-producer-wanted-more-drastic-changes-to-original-story) It doesn't exactly acquit Nomura completely, but honestly, even with the same people in charge none of them are exactly at their peak. Nojima as a writer especially seems very hit and miss, with his hits being long gone replaced by Tidus mine incidents and such.
    Anyway, a great review, Owen!

That was a wonderful and great review, as someone who played and felt pretty much what you said (I know a LOT of people felt the same) it was a true cherised memory thinking back.
Could I play FF VII now? no, that time is done but that team did a fantastic job to pull together a well paced, heart felt game with strong characters that seems unfortunuely wasn't something the remake got.
Much like a lot of things now, the original game was a product of it's time that just can't happen the way it did anymore, maybe if it wasn't FF VII and was something else entirely with no expectations, lore or profit to be made driving it they might be lucky and have a "new" FF VII on their hands. I'm happy that people at the time got what we did, but also someone really needs to stop Nemura now...

This review really makes me clamor for a review of frozen meals that no longer exist, compared to similar frozen meals that do exist but I've never tried because I'm more self conscious about the food I eat now than when I was 8 years old. Or perhaps I just had less agency over the contents of the freezer back then.

It feels more like a sequel than a remake, which I guess is part of the problem, but at least there's finally a "remake" of something that isn't also trying to *replace* the original.

Imagine sitting down and playing this a second time. Imagine watching Red XIII slowly pull those levers all over again. 10/10 game of the year. Good video.

Very nice and well thought out. That said I disagree since I very much loved the Remake, and am even willing to take the parts of the original or compilation I didn't like. Though that may be in part because none of the games were my childhood just stuff I played as a teen.

This is a game I love to hate, because it's overrated, but I can't deny it's clear cut qualities.

Very good review, and I totally agree on how the new stuff often feels discordant, but that the way the party members are written is just so, so spot-on to the spirit of the original. Of course I'm anxious about where they're going to go next, but at the same time I'm absolutely ecstatic to just spend more time with Insecure Fiery Preacher Barret, Trying-To-Be-Cool Cloud and Aerith Who Swears. I just hope they keep letting these characters live and breathe rather than throw it all away for Nomura Kingdom Hearts Nonsense.
Honestly, given that reviews are pretty much unanimous on 'setting great, characters great, pacing oof, new stuff meh' I'm actually pretty confident they might tighten it up a bit. Here's hoping they really do integrate the new stuff; there's some speculation for example that Roche's arc is going to be illustrating how Soldiers burn out past their prime, living lives that burn twice as bright for half as long.
