Very true, but even without being a warcraft vet like me (started playing during LK), this trailer and the expansion in general were just an amazing experience.
The letter the king wrote about the prince is one huge irony: "My son, the day you were born, the very forests of Lorderon whispered the name: Arthas" - the forest is now haunted and full of blight, mangy animals and undead "My child, I watched with pride as you grew into a weapon, of righteousness." - this line is read while Arthas pulls out the sword that corrupted his soul and enslaved his will, making him a weapon for evil "Remember, our line has always ruled with wisdom and strength; and I know you will show restraint when exercising your great power" - this is said while the runes on the blade activate and he will use the power for resurrecting Sindragosa, a female dragon that already held a grudge against mortals before dying. "But the truest victory my son, is stirring the hearts of your people" - as we are shown an endless army of heartless undead zombies. "I tell you this, for when my days have come to an end, you shall be king!" - the king was stabbed by his son and the Arthas committed genocide on humans and elves and raised them as his undead army and be their king. More info about the dragon Sindragosa: "Blinded and near death, after being wounded by Deathwing , Sindragosa sought desperately to reach the Dragonblight - the place where dragons instinctively travel to die. No longer able to fly, Sindragosa plummeted to the cold earth in the region of Icecrown. The blue dragon gathered what remained of her energy and called out to Malygos for aid . Her only answer was the howling arctic wind as she struggled on, but the distance was far too great; agonizingly she realized that her spirit would not find rest within the Dragonblight. Her life continued to fade away as her sanity deteriorated. In the midst of her delirium, Sindragosa's final thoughts turned to bitterness and hatred: hatred against the Legion, hatred against Neltharion, hatred even against Malygos. But most of all, hatred against the world of mortals."
the one thing that is lost to people who don't know the story, there is a lot of irony baked into his father's speech. his father used to be a just king and beloved by his people, and this speech was given before his son's eventual falling in corruption and betrayal and regicide of his own father and genocide of his own people only to then raise them as undead slaves. the irony is really felt by the fans when his father says "and when my days come to an end, you shall be king".
"but the truest victory my son, is stirring the hearts of your people" no matter how many times I watch this, I still feel the chills, and sadness of him now being the king of the undead.
This expansion was a culmination of waiting after a massive cliffhanger ending from Warcraft 3's expansion the Frozen Throne in 2003. WoW vanilla loosely addressed the presence of the undead Scourge but we knew from 2004-2008 WoW would eventually lead to us fully dealing with them. Now 12 years later in the dimensions of Warcraft's afterlife, the Shadowlands, we are learning about the powers behind the undead on Azeroth, the runeblade Frostmourne and the Lich King's helm as well as how the Shadowlands connects to other powers and worlds we have dealt with so far.
Shadowlands sucked balls. Zovaal was a genaric, lame villian that was "something something dark side." With one 'twist' after another "explaining" lore, when in reality, they were just soft-retconning established, classic and beloved lore just to support Danuser's shitty fan-fic storyline that was designed to A) sell bliz store items B) Cram "the message" down our throats at every moment. Fuck SL.
His simple explanation left you with something of a misunderstanding. Arthas culls a city of already infected people, that they have no way of saving, that will turn into undead in a matter of hours. That is the first point. The paladins of his order, and his former teacher condemns him for that choice(The Lich King, the spirit in the sword and armor he later puts on, already started whisper to him the night before "The Culling of Stratholme." Starting by saying cold harsh truths that make perfect sense. Like the fact that if they're infected, the city would have to be culled). Moving on, he later chases after Mal'ganis, a demon(specifically a Dreadlord), that claimed responsibility for the plague of undeath. All the way up to Northrend. A long campaign for destroying the root of their troubles, and getting revenge... There he finds an old Dwarven friend, Muradin. Who is looking for the blade Frostmourne. While hordes of undead attack their camp, under the leadership of Mal'ganis. Realizing they can't win through strength of arms, they go to find the blade instead. Seeking to use the artifact against Mal'ganis. When they finally find it. Muradin tells arthas to hold while he inspect the dais that the sword is placed on, seeing an inscription that reads: "Whomsoever takes up this blade, shall wield the power eternal. Just as the blade rends flesh, so must power scar the spirit." Muradin then says in a shaky voice: "Ohh... I should have known. The blade is cursed! Let's get the hell out of here!" Arthas: "I would gladly bear any curse to save my homeland." Muradin: "Leave it be Arthas. Forget this business, and lead your men home." Arthas: "Damn the men! Nothing shall prevent me from having my revenge old friend! Not even you." Arthas: "Now I call out to the spirits of this place. I will give anything or pay any price, if only you will help me save my people." (Basically cutting a deal with the sword) The pact breaks the ice sealing the sword, which catches Muradin in the explosion, seemingly killing him. And the sword lays claim to his soul, but doesn't quite consume him completely yet. Using the sword, Arthas manages to defeat Mal'ganis. This is the conversation that follows: Mal'ganis: "So... You've taken up Frostmourne at the expense of your comrades lives. Just as the Dark Lord said you would. You're stronger than I thought." Arthas: "You waste your breath Mal'ganis. I heed only the voice of Frostmourne now." Mal'ganis: "You hear the voice of the Dark Lord, he whispers to you through blade you wield. What does he say, young human? What does the Dark Lord of the Dead tell you now?" Arthas: "He tells me, that the time for my vengeance has come." (Honoring the spirit of the deal) Mal'ganis: "What? He can't possibly mean to--" *Queue Arthas stabbing him.* Arthas: "It is finished." Then Arthas wanders into the frozen wastelands of Northrend for a time. Driven further under the command of the blades whispers. When he returns, he does so with most of the armor he is in here(pieces broken off from the frozen throne, according to the original story). His hair has turned completely white, his cloak is black, and his eyes has changed from deep green to green with a spark of ice blue shining behind them. And then he returns to Lordaeron, and turns the rest of the country into pretty much a wasteland. Gets a special urn to store the remains of the top necromancer he previously slew back while himself he was in control(Said Necromancer, Kel'thuzad - Was pretty chill about getting killed, knowing he would return). It just so happens that the special urn was used to store his father's ashes, and was held by his former Paladin teacher. Uther the Lightbringer. Whom pissed and depressed asks Arthas if he: "Intended to piss on them one final time, before he left his father's kingdom to rot." Before this twisted new version of Arthas laughed and slew him. As he lies dying Uther says: "I dearly hope there's a special place in hell waiting for you Arthas." To which Arthas replies: "We may never know Uther. I intend to live forever." He then carves a path, that later became known as "The Dead Scar", all the way from the top of Lordaeron, and up to the middle of the high elves kingdom. Where he uses and corrupts the "The Sunwell" to resurrect Kel'thuzad(Necromancer, leader of the Cult of the Damned, and a former Archmage) as a Lich. Note: While you play as Arthas in the game, and sets him to attack an enemy(after getting Frostmourne). One of the common voice lines is: "You will know endless torment!" Something which has since been confirmed to be true. Frostmourne cuts into the very souls of its victims, and then absorbs them. Though in Uther's case, his connection to the light caused a very special scenario. Where half his soul went to the afterlife for light wielders, and ther other half was absorbed by the sword. The half in their "heaven", became damaged, with a large blue-glowing scar/open wound over his heart.
3:15 Game of Thrones season 7's final scene _heavily_ homaged this trailer, with the 'zombie dragon flying over army of zombies in an icy hellscape with a panning shot.'
Arthas' story line can be summarized as the living example of the road to hell being paved with good intentions. Arthas was always focused on the greater good, and for that pursuit, he did terrible things, until he had reached a point of no return. Every single one of Arthas' decisions up until taking Frostmourne, were very logical and wise decisions from the frame of reference and knowledge that Arthas had.
As a person who only started playing this game because of his younger brother, back in 2007, This expansion was a BIG deal! and I have so many good memories from this exp!
By far my favorite cinematic, just hits different compared to the other ones when you have played the story in Warcraft 3. This one and probably Warlords of Draenor.
It just IS the most epic cinematic ever. Not only because of the epicness, but there's alot of story here and the speech you hear is given by The Lich King's late father.
Love the producer making the comment at the end. Like the hype of arthas goes so beyond WoW. The feeling of ‘holy SHIT’ was even more than just seeing an expansion from a game we already played for the last 3 years. The game we played had whispers and evidence of what arthas did, but no real direct line to him. The games that preceded it is where we saw arthas go down his path, so after years, we finally get to see him in all his power. The culmination of that was just so unbelievably epic.
Ah my favorite. I'll be interested to see what you think about it ^^ Well maybe not my favorite trailer. But certainly my favorite expansion(you should check out the original in-game based trailer for this expansion. The voice acting, and reveals for it are MUCH better).
If you knew that the narration is the voice of Arthas's father(Lich King) when he considered his son to be a good King, but its in contrast to how he became, basically everything in this cinematic is in contrast to the narration voice.... This is masterpiece...
This was very interesting. Two actors reacting to WoW and a 3rd guy in the background givin' them a short but great explanation of the Lore. More please! In chronological order please!
mislead. Tragedy of Arthas is that he was abandoed by every one when making tough decisions yet still going till the end to make things right. So in the end, when he was about to be cursed by lich, no one was around to do a tought but right thing in return by helping him, he was alone and lich used that.
Guess I am just one of the few people that hated that he became an end boss... I would've want him to have his own faction tbh. I understand it is not possible... But I feel the culling of Stratholme was the only choice he had. I doubt he had the people to put the city in quarantine and he had to stop Mal'Ganis. Go straight for Mal was no option either since people were already infected which would lead to more infected. And I wonder if they knew how quick the turning happened. in WC3 the time is pretty limited. but say people would evacuate and spread the plague even further.. that would be no option either. Maybe had he not picked up Frostmourne he still could have fulfilled his task... who knows? When setting sail to Northrend and being recalled soldiers would leave again which would fail his mission. At the very least they should've redeemed Arthas I think in Shadowlands. Maybe more so than Kaelthas.
It's so sad the Warcraft movie was rushed into one movie, they tried to put everything into one movie trying to explain it all, which didn't work and the story was too chaotic it never caught on, if they approached it like Lord of the Rings and did multiple movies and took the time to explain the story, it would've been far more successful. And maybe they would've been able to tell this great story about Arthas's downfall to becoming the Lich King, unfortunately that didn't happen so we can only imagine what it could've been like with trailers like this.
You have a few more to react to!! 6 more to be precise! I'm a hardcore wow player, on and off for 15 years this year! Arthas is responsible for killing Sylvanas. As well as hundreds more. Sylvanas is said sadly no longer "good"... Long story lol.
What sucks the most is that in the current lore this tailers emotional beats are null because arthas never had control of himself after putting on the helm.
The height of the hype. There's a lot of nostalgia baked into this trailer. Things that hit you differently if you're a Warcraft vet.
This is straight truth. BOLVAR FOREVER!
Also...Tirion...WATCH THE ICE TRAP
pro tip : watch series on flixzone. Been using them for watching loads of movies these days.
Very true, but even without being a warcraft vet like me (started playing during LK), this trailer and the expansion in general were just an amazing experience.

good video, keep it up!
Not sure if WoW lore knowledge, but in Warcraft 3, you play as arthas when he is a Paladin and watch him fall as a human trying to save his people
this was basically blizzards end or conclusion to there game after this is activision expansions
activision blizzard came in 2008, thats when the first real money mount came.
if you know the lore, you will feel sad with the irony of the King's words as you see each action Arthas made in this cinematic
Remember: Arthas is one of the best characters ever made, Doubt me? Culling of Stratholm.
David Benioff and D. B. Weiss straight ripped of this to Game of Thrones, Lich King = Night King etc.
Trailer is better than every movie you 2 did lol
it made me so mad listening to how the dude explained the lore behind it
Do diablo 3 next
FFXIV Flames of Truth
Shadowlands please 🙏🏻
The last best expansion the rest is ugh!!!
Thumbnail says wrong video btw

@@frokghug thanks, we are working on a fix. Thank you for letting us know.
