I love the nail knot. The energy transfers very nice though the whole leader. I build 7’.5” leaders for largemouth bass. Butt end I use a perfection loop 4.5 feet of 40# Mono then blood knot to 18” of 30# Mono for mid section or transition sections if you will then blood knot to 18” of 20# fluorocarbon for a tippet. It turns the large flys over great when using streamers or terrestrials. This is build off a 8wt line. The golden rules are your butt section should always be about 2/3 of the diameter of the fly line. Then the butt section should be 60 percent of the total length of the leader 60-20-20. You can experiment a little but keep these key numbers in your head. Also the blood knot is the best but with very light tippet say 5X or 6X for dry flies. A triple surgeon is also great. Allot of people over complicate leaders, they are the business end of the line but they are not difficult to figure out. Thanks C.
I snuck out yesterday up here in Northeast Iowa and got one on the dry! According to the forecast, I won’t be out on the water for a while! Great video.
Just started doing this myself but I just tie up the point fly and dropper fly and store it in either the orvis tandem fly box or the cliff duece fly box. I guess I could do the entire leader but quick enough to just add some more line via surgeons knot. Good stuff man. These next few weeks are gonna suuuuuck.
New fly fisher here and I really appreciate the informative videos. Leaders especially. I'd love to see another one on the different leader formulas you use for different tactics. Anyway, love the content. Keep it up. Peace.
Love these types of videos, keep'em coming! I'm from Madison so sadly I too will not be heading out this weekend but I will most definitely be making a few pre-made leaders!
Thanks for this style of video! My question is do you have a typical number of blood knots you use when constructing your leaders (e.g. 3-4 never more than 5)? I’ve heard you don’t want too many but you also want to make sure you have a nice taper. Also what’s your favorite brand of tippet material? Thanks!
No number! For my 15' or 20' dry fly leaders I will make 5 or 6 blood knots!! For some of my shorter nymph setups I like to make em w/ 2 or 3 knots As far as tippet goes, Rio is the cream of the crop imo
Mike, this was helpful. Especially using foam to store the rigs and seeing the blood knot tied. What kind of knot do you use to connect your prerigged setup to your leader?
Hello Mike- Long time watcher, first time poster. First, thank you for all of the videos you create- appreciate the focus of your channel. As you asked in the video, I wanted to provide some feedback. I am an IA trout angler (started with spinning, now **attempting** fly rod). While your videos focused on streams and fishing them are enjoyable, I think that your videos with more educational content really stand out. Content relating to the approach to fishing these spring creeks- from gear to technique and everything in between- is a niche I think you could exploit a bit more (I realize this perspective may be biased due to the fact that I am learning to fly fish myself). I would encourage you to keep on integrating more educational content into your videos on spring creek techniques, whether the video is off-stream or (even better!) in-stream, as I think you have a wealth of experience you can draw from and experiences you can share. If this comment seems at all negative, I did a poor job of conveying my opinion. I just want to highlight what I think is part of your portfolio I think you could really open up and explode with (while helping me suck less at fly fishing!). Ok, back to lurker mode. Respectfully, Chris PS- After scanning the comments prior to posting, I see someone with a much simpler and concise expressing my exact sentiment: "Love the educational videos!"
HOLY COW!! Thank you so much! I appreciate that! I am happy to help any angler I can! Spin or fly! I will for sure keep that in mind, the educational vids are a bit more outside my comfort zone truth be told.. But any fishy knowledge I can pass on the better! I will have to make some more! Thank you so much for your support brother! Tight lines!
Yes! Like these sort! How much of a taper do you plan for, in general? Meaning how many sizes of material from the butt to the tip? As always, your enthusiasm is amazing!!!
Great video Mike! I'm an old guy who does things the hard way...thanks for showing the better way. Keep up the good work. How are you liking your Drifter?
Great video Mike. Just a point of clarification though (no shade intended). Those are both "Monofilament" lines, more accurately Flourocarbon and Nylon lines. Tight lines, and keep the vids coming.
Carful using your teeth to cut line. Teeth can break easier than you think. Enjoy your videos but I don’t want to see you with a couple of broken teeth.

Love to hear it! Thank you!
thxs 👍👍good job
What a great idea. Thank’s
I think those temperatures you flashed are the highs for this weekend 😀. Thanks for sharing the knowledge Mike! Tight lines!
It is not looking pretty!
I’m headed back to the current tomorrow it’s gonna be a cold day!😂😂
Love the educational video. Nice job.
Thank you! Maybe I'll do more!

Man I should have gone out too! This weather is nasty!
Great tips! Tight lines!
Thank you!
Good stuff mike!!!

Thank you so much! That is a really good way to do it too! Gotta use every advantage we can! We are really in for some nasty weather haha
Pro move!
Thank you!

There is not much else to do unfortunately!

How are you attaching your leader to your fly line with a loop to loop connection when you have large flies already tied on? Thanks for sharing!
That forecast tho! 😭
It is really scary haha
I do like the fishy knowledge. Thank you !
I like it. I’m def going to rig up a few. It’s about to be soooo cold for the next week! Stay warm man!
Not much else we can do!! Thanks you too!
This is a game changer man. Thank you!
You bet Skyler! Glad you liked it!
The tackle buddy brand snell holders fit in a 3600 box. That’s what I always do
Cool channel, but why when u can buy a single tapered leader at the exact X and length u want and then just replace the whole thing if it breaks off?
Mike, this was helpful. Especially using foam to store the rigs and seeing the blood knot tied. What kind of knot do you use to connect your prerigged setup to your leader?
Thank you so much! No knot required! It will be a loop to loop connection (assuming the end of your fly line has a molded loop)
@@FLYALLSZN Eureka! I was thinking these were tippet rigs tied to the leader.
I’m watching this on my phone setting up 5 different premade while watching one of your idaho fishing trips on my tv!!!
Your video has some great tips. As I have observed your videos on the water, I knew you had mastered some very efficient procedures.
Thank you so much! I am just trying to be as productive as possible! Prep time is all part of it!
Sweet video. How do you put it on, I know it is a loop to loop connection but do your flies go though the welded loop?
Yeah! Loop to loop makes it super easy!

Here in the Driftless I fish super short leaders! 3 max! A taper from 0x to like 3x then my tippet ring with my flouro and flies!
Nice
Thank you!

Thank you so much! I absolutely love it!! It is like casting butter!! Super smooth

I’m still waiting for some of your fly tying videos.
I know! They are easier said than done! Just know I am working on them haha

Thank you Marshall! I try not to anymore haha
