For more of Tom Hanks masterclass acting, check out Captain Phillips. The movie as a whole was ok I guess, nothing too special, but one scene right at the end of the movie is quite literally some of the best acting I have ever seen.
I love that the screenwriter knew, "I'm going to get people to cry over this volleyball" when he first introduced it into the story. For an inanimate object, it's such a real character.
I was stranded on a tropical island for 5 years. This package gave me another reason to survive. By the way, what's in it? Oh, nothing that wasn't easily replaced. Just a portable GPS, a satellite phone and some spare batteries.
Some people didn't see the movie because it looked "boring". They failed to see the movie is an emotional journey. Their loss, because this movie is just amazing.
I've heard people say the fade out ending is anti climactic. But the point I try to make with that is, remember how he described feeling powerless on the island. He didn't even have the power to kill himself how he wanted. Now here he stands, back home but lost Kelly all over again, has Wilson, delivered his last package, he's at a literal and metaphorical crossroads. He can go any direction, for any purpose. He can finally decide where he wants his life to go.
The whole time that he's stuck on the island, there's no background music, which just adds to the rawness of the experience. We only hear background music once he leaves the island.
They did a lot of research with castaway survivors. The thing with the flashlight in the early on, the coming home and flipping light switches over and over... all things survivors reported doing.
At the beginning of the movie it pans over a wall in chucks house and on the wall is some sort of certificate or award for sailing so he did have some pretty useful survival skills.
I think him apologizing to Stan about not being around when his wife died isn't about the apology itself, its about showing us that Chuck has changed, and whereas before he avoided conversations like that entirely, now he knows what's important and dives right in.
This film was very special for my family for various reasons: we already loved Tom Hanks, but my dad, whose name is also Stan (Chuck's friend), worked for FedEx at the time that we saw it, and we also lived in Memphis, Tennessee--most of my siblings, myself included, were born in Memphis. Something my mom would point out a lot, though, was that my dad would NEVER open any of those packages were he in Chuck's situation--he's too honest of a man.😆❤
the only thing that saved chuck from his leg getting gangrene was the fact the wound happened in salt water which is a natural antiseptic. It's interesting they only showed the wound briefly and then it was never mentioned again. I would like to have seen the progression over the weeks. Side note: Tom Hanks really did make fire on his own so his elation was real.
I am not surprised at his relationship with Wilson. If I was stranded like this I would probably name a palm tree and have conversations with it just to keep my sanity and have “someone “ to talk to. 👍
The end is purposefully ambiguous, and the ending visual of Hanks literally standing at a crossroads is not lost on me. His look, his demeanor, suggest that he is indeed ready to move on with life and whatever direction he takes.
I performed on the score to this film and fondly remember it as being one of the few projects I’ve had centered on strings. I’ll always love the typical massive Hollywood sound, but the intimate writing of Alan Silvestri here makes this soundtrack one of my favorites. Thank you for your reaction!
This was filmed in two parts. Tom spent many months starving himself and growing that very real facial hair. He has an anecdote about showing up at the studio office only to be mistaken for a homeless man by a secretary he knew very well.
Everyone talks about how Chuck will move on, but what about Kelly? Here she is, married with children, but she has to live with the fact that the love of her life is back. She has an obligation, as a wife and mother, to stay with her family, but she has feelings for Chuck that will never go away. That has to be tough to live with.
We look on how Chuck interacts with Wilson and think that he lost his mind, but Wilson is what was KEEPING his sanity. Humans require social interactions, and Wilson provided a bandage for that gap. He allowed Chuck to voice his ideas out loud and imagined how other people would respond. He also provided something to care for, which often prevents suicidal people from actually following through.
The movie ends with him looking in the direction of the angel wings lady and sort of smiling, so to me it seems conclusive that's his next life. Not ambiguous at all.
@@CapedInformer I gotta say man. This is one of my favorite movies, I've watched its countless times. I've seen probably a dozen RUclips reactions to this movie. Yours is the best I've seen. I only found you today. Subscribed.

You know the meme with DiCaprio doing the finger pointing? That is me whenever the porta-potty shows up in the movie ( my hometown). Another movie that deals with the long road and how people change, is the movie "Her." It, in away, gave me perspective on dealing with a love lost.
i watched this one a few times and my god Tom Hanks hits the right spot in my heart every time... i cried at the wilson scene i cried at the lost marriage scene... what can u do this man deserved his oscars for sure.
I love this movie. That being said I found one error in the filming. One moment Chuck is on the raft just prior to rescue with a dark tan cultivated over years. The next scene has him on a plane heading home to Kelly and his tan has miraculously disappeared. You don’t lose a tan like that even if it took a month for him to head home. That’s the only thing my eyes found unbelievable in an otherwise brilliant movie.
I watched this with all my friends when we were teenagers and it ruined it. Lol. They just made fun of him the whole time, it was hilarious at the time but I wish I had watched it alone the first time
I remember during the making of this film, Tom was spotted looking very gaunt and everybody, myself included, thought he was dying. Dude ppl at work were talking about this not helping anyone. Then the studio put out a statement about the weightloss was for his new film.
It was the wings on the box that gave him the idea to use the part of the Porta-potty to go over the waves that were holding him back. That's why they were shown at the beginning and why he delivered the package and the wings were shown on her ranch, because they saved him.
My mother rented this for the family when I was ten-the night before we were supposed to fly overseas. Excellent movie, but really put my mom’s judgement under review…
That’s not a cheap yellow floatee you get down at the Walmart. Survival rafts are built incredibly tough and multi-chambered to help with flotation after damage.
I cried so much watching this in theaters. Actually ended up seeing it three times. Wilson floating away just killed me inside. I cried so hard. And then yeah, when he gets back its just depressing as heck. With the exception of the very end of course. I'd die on a island, mainly because I hate seafood. And while coconut is good, it will turn your butt to drive thru forever. lol. I imagine though I'd be hungry enough that I'd eat seafood. Survival instincts make you do anything. Four years though? I don't know. I love being by myself, but not sure about four years.
Lord of War has a very similar "POV" intro shot, which is pretty intense. Heh, "Please tell me Chuck's not worried about the damn packages right now!" It probably crossed his mind for a brief moment. Great movie. Great message. I think it was better to just show the noose as an after thought while he was making rope to build his raft. More just hinting at it rather than dwelling on it, I think helps focus on the theme of hope over suffering. I do think he decides to go talk to that woman again. It holds on him smiling as he looks down the road she drove down, as if she was what "the tide brought in" for him.
Tom Hanks did really gain and then lose weight for this one, and they took a break from filming while he worked to lose it. Have you seen the movie “What Lies Beneath” starring Harrison Ford? They filmed that one during that break. 😊 Completely different type of movie (suspense/thriller) but also a good one. Thank you for this reaction! I love your thoughts on it.
This movie always reminds me of the real case about that plane who crash in the Andes mountains (South america, Argentina-Chile border) and how 16 boys of 17-25 years survived something like 60 days in the mountains until two of them finally found a farmer that called the cops after 4 days climbing down the mountains. That power of will that desire to be alive that makes miracles. Like this movie.
Great review man ! One in a while, we come across actors who just gives everything they have and everything they are and raise the bar to a level only a few can achieve, its not just acting, its a journey, an experience, the ability to unlock something inside us, connect and somehow heal.
