For those who are looking to just place your saddle back on it's the two indented sides facing down or a away from you (if you were holding the guitar in the play position.)
thank you so much for showing this, I have my mothers old guitar and that saddle is broke on it and thought it would cost me tons to have fixed. Now I can get to it myself and bring it back to life.. Bless you!
Hi Gareth - just to point out that the 'compensation' part of the saddle is on the B string at the HIGHER end of the strings. Also warning about removing saddle with rough pliers could damage saddle - especially bone saddle. I've just crumbled mine after going through the whole process of resizing a new one - and I used parallel pliers! Take care.
Thanks for the capo tip, no more string spaghetti
Rick S such a simple but great idea that I’d never thought of
Ashamed that an old bloke like me never thought of holding the strings in place with a capo! thanks for that! :-)
Hi. Any suggestions to perform this on an integrated saddle? I mean the one integrated with a pickup cable.. I'm not sure how to remove and sand off that kind of saddle. Thanks!
ty... i just found the same problem with my High E string... was cutting into the bridge too. learning to play and at same time on a adam levine folk guitar from walmart. which means cheap price. will try replacing with bone. again ty for taking the time to share.
Thanks for video. Very helpful!
Thank You very much!
Nice vid. What guitar did you use on the video?
Thanks! Very helpful!
Regarding end of vid..will there probably be a space underneath of saddle..or should it be fit to bottom out on guitar?
went to a luthier to get my guitar set up a few weeks ago. when i went to pick it up (a week late) as he was getting it from another room i noticed a similiar model to mine where they had put heaps of dents in the bridge prying the saddle out with a screwdriver or something! got mine back and he had done it to mine too! luckily not quite as bad.
He also put a pin through the bridge to ensure it would never lift, his idea, i took his advice. Dont have a problem with the pin or the inlay they put on top of it, but it would be nice if it wasn't off centre!
Then to top it off he put on different strings to what he explicitly said!
Can't bloody believe it, local business that came highly recommended and has been around decades.
Jordan Cochrane that's why you learn to do it yourself, it saves money and you can work on your guitars at any time
He screwed your guitar with that pin.
It's not a catastrophe, but it's a very bad method that harms the guitar.
A saddle should just fit in snuggly enough so that it doesn`t fall out when you turn the guitar upside down, but it should able to be pulled out by hand or almost. You should not have to push hard on the saddle to insert it in the Bridge slot, because if the saddle is to tight and you force it in, the it may eventually cause the bridge to split.
Hi love your video always help me a lot. But acustic guitar or classical guitar is better? I deciding between classical or acustic.
Dropped my guitar and realize the saddle broke. Thought I had to replace the whole bridge. Seems like a relief
Did it work I thought it was the strings then realized it was the saddle
Hey Gareth thanks for all the lessons. When I play my acoustic through my amp I get a lot of buzzing on the b string and high e, would replacing the saddle fix this problem or is it something different? Thanks again. Keep up The great work!,
Could be that your frets are worn, could be that your action is too low or you’ve worn grooves into your nut/saddle. Hope this helps 9 years later😎
Well done Mate! Call me crazy but I love the chord progression that begins your video and would like to learn it. Can you help me with tab or other teaching aids? Cheers and Happy Holidays!
very helpful. thank you.
Thank you, what is the notch for and where does it fit?
Thank you, super helpful!!!
what model is your guitar?
best thing i ever did was change my saddle from tusq to bone. improved the sound no end.
That's what I was wondering.. Is it worth it? I guess I will change it. I'm just nervous messing up my baby - even though I had experience in wood working I still don't want to "fix what isn't broken" but if it really changing the sound then I suppose I should do it...
Tusq is prefered by many, as it is not poreous like bone....
Have you encountered an acoustic with the split saddle where it actually has two pieces of saddle? Do people usually just cut a one piece into? I have a Takamine that has this. Thanks!
meant the bridge not saddle I guess :P
helped me alot thanks
i had the same problem, in my case it was the nut had fallen off and i used too much glue when putting it back on, so it ended up on an angle. I took it to a boutier (someone who makes guitars) and he fixed it and went through the rest of my guitar for about 20$. in my case the buzzing was strings from them hitting the frets because the nut was lower than it should be
what is the purpose of the compensated saddle as compared to the non compensated one?
I'm new to guitars and I inherited one without a saddle to begin with. Would it be ok if I just put in a saddle that fits the length and width of the slot in the bridge? Or do I have to figure out the right depth it should be in there?
+Trixie Anne Felisco i know it's a year late, but yes you can. if anything get a saddle that's bigger because it's much easier to remove material than it is to add.
Haha I was like, “That looks like Gareth from PGG... wait!"
Hey Gareth! I’m a huge fan. I have a question, my guitar saddle is plastic and although the tone is decent, I’ve heard other guitars and it makes mine almost sound like a toy (if that makes sense) do you think the bone saddle might be the reason? (Yes I tune my guitar haha). Thank you for any input!!! Keep being a boss!!!
Also it’s a Martin guitar it’s not a cheap-O.
There are some very high quality plastic saddles available, that may not equal or surpass bone saddles, but will hold things on their own. It is the el-cheapo, bottom bracket plastic ones, which aren't hard, taut enough, into which the strings cut in, affecting intonation. The "toy'ish" sound need not be because of the saddle. There are several dozen other factors playing into it: wood type, wood maturity/age, wood cut quality/finish, bracing underneath, it's type, thickness, shape, size of guitar, soundhole, presence/basence of cutout, string types, string gauges, string age, guitar manufacturing process, luthier skill, exposed temperature/humidity, apart from the skill of the player.
I am glad I found this video❤
Can a Grafttech tusq PQ-9400-C0 bridge if its a little to thick can it be shaved down thick fit a Gibson guitar bridge
Is it normal for the saddle to be noticably shorter than the slot it fits into? I just bought a 2nd hand guitar - the saddle is 73mm and the slot appears to be 75mm - the saddle is loose and held in place by the strings. I wondered if I should buy a replacement 76mm saddle and just sand off 0.5mm from each side so it fits snuggly into the slot?
Sahel Rain nooooooo, you need a new one, it should fit nicely. I hope you fixed your problem
I may have a lot of questions when I get started refinishing the one Iam working on. I am just finishing up sanding now.
My Taylor 614ce 2006 has a muffled D string when fretted at the 4th fret with fingering or a capo ,all other strings sound good ,is that a saddle problem or bridge pin or the bridge itself any help please .
maybe try adjusting truss rod
Thx for that , problem has been solved it was the battery cover rattling slightly when the batteries were removed cheers Guitarist100
does the compensated section of the saddle, land on the thickest strings?. soorry wasn't clear in the video, thanks tho really helpful jut about to hone down a bone saddle here!
arr I c it's the thinnest so b string
Yes he did say 'lower strings' but he meant 'higher strings'.
I replaced my saddle with a bone one myself but its not a snug fit but its loosen in there but it doesnt move sideways of back and forth is that still alright?
so the saddle is a interferance fit. what is you opinion on brass saddles and nuts.
Brass saddles and nuts are known to be to bright as in it’s hard to hear ever single note on its own ya feel? That messes up not only strumming but finger picking too
My saddle isn't nearly as tight as that; in fact if i'm changing the strings and just cleaning my guitar with lemon oil, when I turn it upside down to do the back the saddle often just slips out with a lot of ease and ends up on the floor. Should I be concerned about this?
the saddle on my brand new ibanez with severe fret buzzing came came right out too; and the replacement saddle that it CAME WITH, doesnt even fit no matter how hard i press!
tiny amount of sanding got it in... i think? i hope its deep enough
yeah its not fkn deep enough.. gonna have to sleep on this
stupid ibanez selling me a brand new guitar with a bent neck...
hey Gareth, how do you restring a pin-less guitar? like a breedlove atlas solo
Hi Gareth, I'm getting conflicting advices on whether to use glue to settle down the saddle and nut. Please can you advise? Thanks
No
NO
How do I know how much to sand off?
I'll answer this in case someone comes across this.
It should be twice the amount of the height at the 12th fret. So if your Low E is 2.5mm and high E is 2.0mm and you wanna bring it down to 2.0mm and 1.75 respectively, you'd have to sand the low E by 1mm and the high E by 0.5mm.
Mark the measurements and then draw a line.
Really stupid question coming up, I use a Yamaha f310 right handed guitar but I have changed the strings to suit me playing left handed. It’s not sounding right. Can you pls tell me if the lower height part of the saddle should be for the thinnest or thickest string?
Lower part fits for the thinner strings 👍
Could you do a video on how to fix buzzing when playing the guitar. Would be very helpful. :)
Buzzing is most likely because the string touches another fret. You may need a higher bridge or adjust the truss rod.
I'm still trying to figure out how to put my saddle back in correctly cuz it fell out while I was changing strings...can someone help me please!
same thing happened to me recently any answer yet?
@@MrIcaru5 Didn't you watch this video? It's all about how to put a saddle in your guitar.
Just happened to me
Just happened to me lmao
If it's too loose then get a new one. If it's still too loose then super glue it. It's not recommended but it's either than or pay $200 to get a new bridge.
To remove it use goof off or any other super glue remover.
sir
i have recently replaced my saddle and there is a buzzing sound on higher frets.
how can i remove that??
It COULD be that the saddle is just to low and needs to be put up higher a little bit, but I’m not sure.
simeey is right i had the same problem
Hey Gareth, I have just replaced the saddle on my guitar but I am not really sure if I have the angle and the height right. I have seen some guitars with the saddle higher on one end and lower on the other. And some other set really high. Can you show me how to set the saddle right? May be using a measuring tool or something. Thanks
The top of the saddle should be the same as the fretboard radius. With the strings off, take the saddle out of the slot and hold it against the end of the fretboard at the soundhole, the arc of the saddle top should match the arc of the fretboard.
I bought a new saddle because the old one was broken. The new one is too small it wiggles around. Should I still use it or just buy a bigger one?
I have some ebony pins will try the out.
I sand my saddle, the action is still high on 12th fret, about 4mm but it buzz, what should I do?
+Duane Capulla prob sand another half mm id say and check that then and hen keep going another qrt millimeter after that until gone .. thats what I did and have done with mine ... In all from a new one i sanded down 2 mm and its purring like a happy kitten ...
truss rod adjustment
Thank You
Did you purchase a saddle that already had grooves cut for the strings?
Do you have to put slots for the strings in the Saddle? or just leave it alone?
That's also what I would like to know
I think you just leave it alone...pretty sure!
Leave it alone. The strings will wear grooves in the saddle over time
Not in acoustics which have bridges and pins. On archtops where the string angle on the horizontal changes at the saddle because the strings connect to a tail piece which is narrower than the saddle, notches prevent the string spacing from changing under string tension.
I am just here watching in 2020 just to support this guy who helps us out and who ever is reading this do subscribe coz he really is worth the support @garethevans
Gareth , Can i sand above the saddle instead of under?
Cliff Gabriel no, it won't be even if you do
Farah Farinha thank you for that
My saddle is not fit and it's just popping out. What should I do? You told it shouldn't be glued but it's not just stiff
Holy shit it’s the Dude off pretty good gaming?! First my news then my guitar issues
Do we need to glue the saddle while attaching it?
I know this is months late, but I'll answer it in case someone comes across this.
Big NO. you could ruin your bridge.
How do you take the strings out?
oh wait, I figured it out. Thank you
Any change your from north Wales? Recognise the accent and think I saw your RUclips in the post or free press. Great tutorial btw
cool i thought i remembered the name from somewhere cus i was meant to check the channel out. good stuff, im going to be replacing the plastic sadle on my new yamaha FG730s with a bone one
Is it a problem if my saddle is lose in the slot?
Stephen He most likely lol.I'm not an expert but I'm pretty sure glue can fix that
@5:58 - the portion of the saddle with ] an [ goes on your lower strings (B, E)
Lowest??? He triggered me. No. Dude, the lowest is 6th string. Fucking confusing
Jack Lincoln 😂 One of your triggers appears to be, getting triggered.
Aren't the e and b the higher strings?
@@kstonurai9350 Standard tuning from top to bottom is E A D G B E
Shoud I change mine? I mean its a second hand one and I've had it for 2 years and haven't changed it.
how bad would it be to put new one in thats just ever so slightly shorter
FMI is a bit better then bone if your looking for a little more warmth and color.
Should you change your saddle if it has rust on it?
Aljun M yes also don’t play under water any more
My issue is that I lost the saddle! I'd re-strung the guitar and hadn't realised that the saddle must've dropped out during the process (I know I'm a dope) so I haven't got a template to work from :(
I broke my G string while taking my strings off😂😂
Get better underwear! :P
Don’t get it 🤨
What should i do if i lost my saddle?
Ya buy a new one
£2-£5 depending on what it’s made of
Find it.
play a different instrument
What if you dont sand the saddle?
Super 💖
Its ok to have string marks on the saddle but my guitar is good on sounding tho?
Possible fret buzz because the strings are vibrating inside the lines on the saddle
Why need to change guitar saddle? Because it may cause buzz and hiss??
I replaced my plastic crap on my cheap johnson with bone nut and bone saddle..and my guitar sound like a high end guitar..100x's better then before.. bone is where it at..!!!
it has a wire and two little metal strips
My brother in law gave me his guitar and the saddle is literally torn apart ,the third and fourth strong are lower than the others and it sound terrible
U don't want it to have a place to hold the string?
Be warned if you do this. You may lose intonation. Which means that when you play a string open, it's in tune, but when you play notes along that string, they can be out of tune. Some guitars need saddles that are modified to specific measurements in order to keep decent intonation.
if they are in tune how the fuck they are not in tune when u play them together
@@gabyzamfir39 Intonation involves the very precise length your guitar string from the saddle to the nut.
Lowering saddle of a guitar messes up the precise difference between those two points. Even though the guitar string is tuned open perfectly. Like if the low E string is perfectly in tune. Octave fret on that E string (the double dot fret in the middle of the guitar) will not be a perfect E.
@@BiggySeth It is not the lowering of the saddle that changes the intonation as much as where the string breaks over the saddle. If intonation too sharp at 12th fret, then break point needs to be moved farther back on the saddle by filing some off the face of the saddle at that string. Conversely, if the intonation is too flat at the 12th (tuned to pitch open) then you need to file some off the rear side of the saddle. Having too wide of a contact point where the string crosses the saddle can also cause a buzz, especially if using lower tunings as the string can vibrate in the small groove across the contact point.
Not just saddle, but nut as well, plus truss rod, fretboard, frets...
Why is it that my saddle doesn’t fit snuggly? Anyone know
Clever tip if your not chaning string👍
Cool
tip if your saddle is too tight, use feeler gauge blades in between to loosen it, it will come out with your finger tips.
Can I use super glue cuase mine will fall off ?
Ok think I asked that too soon!
Video should be half as long, with just the MEAT - please & thank you.
0:06:05. “The lowest strings”. Physically, lowest? The first and second strings???? Give me a break!
Jack. You need to get layed brother. Nothing bad happened and everything, is okay🥴
@@beef88 A little psychological projection? Hahahahaha
what about electric acoustic?
ISO too high
Do not make unprofessional videos, please !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey Gareth thanks for all the lessons. When I play my acoustic through my amp I get a lot of buzzing on the b string and high e, would replacing the saddle fix this problem or is it something different? Thanks again. Keep up The great work!,
More than likely. I get a lot of buzz on both my acoustic and my electric, and it seems to be the saddle that is the issue on both, so yes. I would say so.
