I noticed something was different while watching the video and yeah the graphics look awesome, planes, clouds etc are really nice. Too bad the AI is acting up, must be quite hard to fix something like that. I also like the briefing part, with the map we can have a better idea of the situation, from which base you take off, where you fly etc. So yeah I really like this video and the graphics at 60 fps with this extender mod are really nice. Thank you again Fishyy and you guys ^^
The brief historical context and mission planning portion of the video were really well produced. I agree with the assesment that it's a common "misconception" that lack of forward defensive armament was the "main" consideration for the development and implementation of frontal attacks against B17 formations. I've read a lot of combat reports from Luftwaffe pilots and a very common theme was how slow and dangerous approaches from the rear would be. However, by November 23, 1942 when Egon Mayer put his idea first into practice it was becoming known there was a distinctive gap in the cone of fire at the 12 o clock of B-17s. A noted fact that can be found in both USAAF and Luftwaffe official memos going forward as the prevalence of head on attacks increased. It became such an issue that USAAF ground crews began installing field kits to retroactivley install guns in the plexiglass of B-17Fs starting in the winter of 1943 and continuing until the issue was officially addressed with the introduction of an electrically operated chin turret on late model B-17F's and all B17-G's. Just my two cents from one student of the Air War in Europe to another. Good luck with fixing the bomber formation AI. =)
Yes, reading Caldwell's JG26 unit history/war diaries, many of the surviving pilots made the point that 'at altitude' an FW was only a little faster than a B17, so closing from the rear could take several minutes to get into effective cannon range=and the whole time you had .50 cal 'tracer' rounds buzzing by your ears like a rainstorm. It was VERY 'nerve wracking'. Another pilot, Otto Stamberger, said that sometimes it was better to attack from 'the beam' because gunners firing to the side had a hard time getting a proper deflection shot on you==of course so did the FW pilot but it was preferable that the gunners missed you.
I noticed the 60 fps immediately, and was able to tell that everything looked nicer. I simply thought it was just a result of the 60fps, but after your explanation I can clearly see that everything just looks better in general.
Marcom deserves a flight with the regia aeronautica on its best moment, flying some Fiat or similar against soviets on the 41 or defending Italy in the 44
Hey Fishyy, I really enjoyed it. Making it a bit like a documentary was really enjoyable. A bit of history, focusing on individual pilots, the primary focus was on the mission itself. All good. I don't understand much of the technical parts. I like the fact that the bombers didn't just fly apart like they used to, losing wings or catching fire in one pass. The bombers had survivability, and that's authentic. Sehr gut. Gruss aus den Rheingau. Bill
Excellent. One of the best. I did notice a practically 3D ground effect from the near vertical. But I enjoyed the way you put it together. Lots of work, attention to detail. It flowed well, from pilot to pilot. Thank you for taking the time to do it. I found it lots of fun to watch. Gruss aus Kiedrich.
The slo-mo is awsome: the tracers, the falling debris, the flying bullet casings... I would rewatch the highlights of your other missions in slow-mo. Very interesting.
Yes this game is amazing sometimes you just want to watch without flying I have the original which is unpached and buggy but for 2001 graphics are insane and it still holds up today. Edit because its buggy sometimes is because it is original Il2 not because it is a bad game I am sure this version the co pilots dont crash all the time which seemed to happen on the original a lot it led to a lot of unintended amusement:)
The amount of effort you put into your editing and production is evidently profound. You almost make it look easy when it very clearly isn't, haha. Would love to see more of this dissection and commentary. Your content always invigorates me to fly in IL-2 1946 again. Cheers.

Fishyyy I do not know what I admire the most between your marksmanship, your manning of the aircraft or your ability as a FMBuilder.!!! Your missions are always so well built and I download every one of them to play as a single player. But the escort aircrafts get too often my scalp!!! Just to be historically accurate on that date, February 20th 1944 (mentionned in the FMB) B24s bombed Gotha factories (Wikipedia Big Week) and JG26 Gruppe which were stationned mainly in France and Belgium had a margin participation during the egress leg of the bombers (JG26 diary). So I choose to switch to 2/JG11 and to transform B27s into B24s in my mission copy but those damned AI bombers are still crazy and my AI wingmen are not so talented as yours!!! Looking forward for the next mission. HERCJG54 France
The picture quality is a lot better with your new equipment. Enjoyed the combat sequences very much. Have you tried the 109G6 with 3 by 3cm MK 108 Kannone? Real bomber manglers!
The P47s and P38s with their larger fuel tanks could fly a combat radius as far as Stuttgart. So when the P51s appeared with the bombers all the way to the target the Luftwaffe suddenly found itself having to spend more time dodging escorts than attacking the bombers. See the book I flew for the Fuhrer by Heinz Knoke. By Easter 1944 most of his original Staffel comrades were either dead or seriously wounded.
