Oh yes, me and food. I like food quite a bit. Provided it's food I actually like.
I have a particular thing I order from every restaurant. Changing the order would not correlate to that restaurant because I have a particular flavor I associate with each restaurant that would not be satisfied by eating something different.
I can't stand wet, gooey-looking food because it reminds me of vomit. Things like spinach and potato salad in particular, which I also don't like the smell of. The smell combined with the texture just makes me gag. (I was once forced to eat a few bites of an egg salad sandwich and that was like torture.)
I'm always glad I'm not the only person who's got weird things with food. XD

    • @Sky-Child

Me too! The texture of bananas/cooked tomatoes makes my skin crawl and I gag. I don't even need to see/feel/taste them, just think about it. I am super sensitive to the heat of things, I can't cope with mushy things like cereal. I hate meat texture (leading to me now being vegan!)
I'm glad it's not just me

    • @petercdowney
      @petercdowney 4 года назад +1

Yes, as a general rule, if I don't like the smell of something, I won't like the taste of it either.
But then again, those two senses are very closely linked.

I've never heard anyone describe this before and it feels like you just described my childhood. No joke, my mom had to get me from school everyday at lunch time because I would freak out walking into the cafeteria. It was the worst thing ever, all the smells and sounds. I hated the cafeteria, I still avoid them as an adult.

Thank you for this! I LOVE garlic, can't imagine it not being an option. I am a sensory seeker when it comes to food. Bland foods make me gag. Smells that make me sick are normally chemical smells like cleaners or perfume - anyone else?

Can't stand perfume too. My art teacher used to bathe in em & I gag everytime I'm around her. Also some people have a naturally "spicy" scent to them - kinda like curries but not in a good way (I really don't know how to describe it). Can't stand that smell.

Mine is dust! I can smell dust in carpets rugs and furniture, and I HATE it. When I lived in a hot country for years I bought rugs for the winter; small one that I could wash. Also, to add to the problem I hate vacuum cleaners… the noise and smell. So, now I’m back in the U.K. where it’s mainly fitted carpets, I’ve bought a wee robot vacuum cleaner, which is low noise.

I’m not very picky with food, but I can’t stand dry food. Whenever I eat bread, I have to drink juice. I also like the taste of peanut butter, but I can’t eat it because it made my mouth very dry and I can’t stand it.

I have and have had so many issues with food throughout my life. Textures and temperatures. Anorexia. Binging and purging with exercise. A hatred of condiments. And now I've adopted a heavy vegetarian diet. Not full vegan but I find i get anxiety if I now incorporate meat or dairy into my diet even if it's only once a week. Oh and I get hella anxiety if I don't have access to fruits and veggies. So I struggle greatly with food to say the least. It sucks.

It's nice to know I'm not the only one who thinks similar like this. And btw. Your videos are super interesting :)

People, specially my wife just don't understand how uncomfortable I feel about runny food. Everyday she whines about how hard to make food for me, because some of her favorite gravies are the most uncomfortable for me.
The dhal curry is something I just can't stand, and the way people eat over here. Over here people mix their food with fingers before eating, and I just can't stand that.
I'm very sensitive about the smell of foods. If I happen to eat from outside, I'm sensitive to the smell of the place and smell of other people; so I have to walk a long distance to an eatery that is a mile away from workplace where there are not many people and it is silent. Since there are not many people and the food there is freshly made and the place is kept super clean, the price is little high too.
It seems nobody close to me understand me; and I just don't know how to explain it.

Bruhhh I feel u. I'm half Indian & when I was growing up I can never eat at the same table with my family because of the way they eat with their hand - and you're so spot on about the dhal & gravies - everytime I see that I feel this creepy-crawlies all over my hands & arms & I gotta shake em off. I get told off many times though cause my family members think that it's quite rude for me to not appreciate our "culture"😑
Like, wtf, it has nothing to do with that.

I understand but I read "I can't and I am sensitive" which are valid and your feelings. Nobody likes changes, for real but so long as you put your best attempt to heck try one bite, have a glass of water to wash it down and or have trash can next to you if ya feel weird but try.
I am Latino and dating someone who doesn't like Latin food and I am gonna try my best, don't want partner to do a complete 180 but at least try because its what I enjoy and wanna enjoy it with those I love and show them who I am. If I cook I don't wanna feel so anxious and or like I have to do extra work, if anyone has advice please let me know cuz I am also kind of content with making that a reason as to why we are not compatible. Food is important to me

My family is autistic and my son is in a wheelchair with severe disabilities and my two daughters who are both autistic. I have a hard time with eating something with more then one or two textures. But because my mom ignores it. I need to eat multitextured foods (as I like to call them) many times. The most annoying thing about this is that my mom thinks I need to 'grow up' and that I 'would make a shame of myself when you eat with someone else'. My sister is a carbon copy of my mom so she doesn't help either. And people ask why I prefer staying at my dad's home.

In some online communities, autistic people call the foods that they can eat all the time "samefoods" they'll say things like "what are your current samefoods?" and I find it very funny that people have found a name for it :D
I have very few food issues myself, (basically the one "big" problem with food I have is cooked fruits and jam) but I do have rituals such as arranging foods or mashing them up, or always eating the crust first when I have sandwiches

My 7yr old daughter has autism and feeding her can be very tricky. She won't eat food with sauce, all food has to be dry food and it has to look pleasing. Smell is another huge barrier but you find ways to adapt. Dinner time used to be so stressful but realising it's part of her condition so remaining calm at meal times helps her to eat better. Thanks for this video.

I am so thankful to have found your channel. It definitely sheds light on the issues that we face on a daily. ..
The way that I could describe my husband before knowing about Aspergers was that he was bright, talked too much or too little, had very in depth knowledge about movies, legos, and comics... Seemed like "he wasnt listening" "or that he didnt care"... he could almost be described as pure innocence, somewhat naive etc.
I feel that the stigma that follows with autism lowers his self esteem which he already struggles with...
the fact that some people would think he was "mentally challenged" or just "too stupid"
I love my husband... his positive traits would be excellent memory, extensive knowledge of things he enjoys, perfectionism, extreme cleanliness, unique humor etc.
I know my partners heart, and for this I learn to forgive easily.
I would not trade our challenges for the world, or a chance to be with somebody "Neuro-Typical"

the foods that i have issues with are condiments, pickled foods, certain types of shellfish, charred foods (little or lots of char both upset me), whole cheese and cheese on other foods (i can only eat pizza), and white milk by itself.
the smell and texture of these foods are what trigger my sensory issues

Is it weird that I'm an Aspie and an unusually happy eater? I can eat anything as long as there's some sort of sauce involved. I tend to mash some ketchup into potatoes. I can't stand eating things without sauce. I know it sounds weird, but it's true!!

I’m not diagnosed but my food issues alone are a strong indicator of spectrum issues : Temperature and smell will keep me from eating, and I’ve gone hungry a fair deal in my life because of it. I refused cold meat sandwiches , I’ve never had potato salad, ham salad, egg salad, tuna salad; my boyfriend had to convince me to try green lettuce salad at age 30 but then I had to give elaborate instructions if the salad had chicken (how hard is it to understand heat transfer???) , and when I don’t prepare (horrible horrible planner) and the only thing to eat is cold meat sandwiches I have to leave. I get a tightness in the chest and my eyes may glaze. Why nobody just gave me some bread and peanut butter to take on short trips as a kid I have no clue - peanut butter and jelly was one of the few things I would eat then. Recently at a family funeral I finally packed peanut butter and crackers and some Kind bars because I remember the depressing smell old cold roast beef sandwiches and potato salad in a rural North American church. One of my cousins asked why I had my own food and I told her what I wrote here today and she looked legitimately baffled . It must be a relief to eat basically whatever’s there without getting all nerved up and having to starve and getting scolded by unsympathetic elders into the bargain.
...just writing that creates the tightness in the chest. As an adult I post occasional links about food issues and ASD and yell at the memory of getting flak for being food-upset.
My mother at one point read a list of ASD traits and told me several of them reminded her of me. It’s too bad seeking a diagnosis is expensive in the states.
Excusevthe lonnnnng Post on an older video but the video plus the comments brought the story to the surface. What’s hilarious is I think I’ve gotten a lot more food tolerant but I’m alone in that belief - some people defer to me to pick food and restaurants because of my “food rules”. :-0. I’m not apologizing for my brain!!!

I am not a fan of squishy/slimy textures (like canned asparagus. EW. or canned spinach. double EW.) but I do like sweet and salty taste with hard textures (like chips) and meats (excluding ham). When it comes to a cafeteria, I get claustrophobic due to the line of crazy teenagers and I will try to eat my food as fast as possible when my friends aren't at our usual table( I do love it when we go outside to eat).

I always add an extra item to our holiday menu to accommodate my (autism hero) son as he is unable to tolerate our typical holiday foods. Examples: spaghetti @ Christmas chicken nuggets for Easter tacos for Thanksgiving. During a school assignment (what is your favorite thing about Thanksgiving? ) he said "My Thanksgiving tacos ". Even average functioning guests got in on it because they thought "Thanksgiving tacos " was a great idea!

Thank you most sincerely, Dan. I can relate to this. I don't like condiments either and will never put salt, pepper, ketchup etc on my food. I have never tried beetroot but I say I don't like it because I don't like the look of it (yet I don't mind red cabbage). I am vegan but that is due to animal rights issues rather than Asperger's. Smell wise, I cannot stand the smell of mint and have never chewed gum in my life. Mint just makes me gag.

People with Asperger's and other autism spectrum conditions often do have an intense like of some foods, and an intense dislike of some others as well. This is because all of our senses are enhanced significantly - our taste buds pick everything up!
I know this because I have Asperger's myself.

First video I have seen on food! Thank you. I have always had issues with food. I don't like certain foods touching each other (like mashed potatoes and peas, which I didn't like but had to eat at holiday dinners), or hot touching cold (ice cream on top of pie), and textures (mushy). I have the additional problem of food allergies, and sesame oil/seeds will actually kill me (anaphylaxis). So....yes, food is an issue with me. I'm old enough that I no longer care if people have a problem with my food issues.....and (with rare exceptions) I have never seen food as something to enjoy; it is merely something to keep my body going. I eat multivitamins to make up for what I lose by not eating certain kinds of foods. My favorite foods? Pasta, rice, pizza, chicken, pies (especially cherry and blueberry), and....pepperoni. I LOVE that, and will eat an entire stick! I have found that food is a power issue, one used by others to control, and so I was fortunate to find a husband who is also a picky eater (though not nearly to the extent I am). Again, thank you for this....it is literally the first one I have seen that deals with autism and food issues.

I have that smell thing with most types of meat and fish, especially while its cooking. I'm vegan for some time now, which was very beneficial to my eating habits. I also relate to what you've said about broccoli. If come to like a lot of stuff, just by exposing myself to it. also for the texture thing: I've managed to like a lot of stuff (especially vegetables) through preparing it differently. When I was a kid and teen, I really prefered dry foods so I ended up pan-frying everything. Nowadays I can eat a lot of stuff. But if I have a bad day, my food preferences become limited again. Dry bread and juice is always a big part of my diet. Also I have special eating habits and I get extremly irritated, when that stuff isn't available. (Bc my roommate finished it or bc it isn't available in stores)

I've not been diagnosed with ASD (though currently going through the process of getting tested for adult diagnosis) - I've always had an issue with "gooey" food, those things that are somewhere between solid and liquid. Avocado, melted or soft cheeses, or things like risotto I can be turned off of too, because of it's texture.
Another texture related thing that I have that is weird is any wood item that gets wet (or more so that can soak up water) - washing up wooden utensils or chopping boards is a no go, because the sensation of it makes me feel sick, and even things like fences or gates when it's been raining, I avoid having to touch or get close to them...

I have asperger's and I have a real issue with eating food of certain textures if someone else has made the food. For some odd reason I don't mind so much if I make it myself. Not sure if that is my asperger's or just a weird quirk? I also have issues with gluten and dairy and have heard that is not uncommon for people with autism, although there isn't much scientific evidence to support it. Your channel is so useful to me - thank you.

I have food texture issues and my family used to bug me about it. I can't stand rubbery foods, like hard boiled eggs and mushrooms. I have no idea how anyone can eat a peach with the fuzz still on. I can't eat raw fish, it makes me so queasy. I had a long standing aversion to a lot of white foods when I was growing up. In high school I only wanted ham and cheese sandwiches for lunch.

Just found this video, and it was so what I needed lol. I can't stand food of mixed textures. If i'm eating something that is normally soft and bit/chew something hard/grissly - the whole mouthful is going to get spit out lol. At school I avoided the cafeteria because it was loud and bright. Also guilty of having certain foods and nothing else, until I stumble onto something new I Love and then obsess over that for months.

i have ASD, and while i’m adventurous when it comes to cuisines, i’m hyper sensitive to textures in food. i can’t stand rice, oatmeal, cereal, baked goods (cookies, cakes, muffins, scones) because it reminds me of vomit. i also really dislike yogurt and any kind of pasta in the form of a string (spaghetti, linguini, angel hair), i can’t explain why, but it makes me so upset! similar to you, as a kid, i loved roast chicken, roasted veg, and mashed potatoes, those textures felt safe and cozy.

But, I also want to have as wide of a palette as possible with food, so I watch Iron Chef Japan and Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern. If it weren't for Andrew, I wouldn't have tried as many of the foods as I have. I highly recommend shows like these to all Aspies that are having food issues. 😁

I have only a few no-no foods. Jellied ham (jellied anything really) makes me retch, as does the skin that forms on hot milk.. I'm a vegetarian now, but when I still ate meat, it made my skin crawl to even think of the gristle that might be in there. Stuff like that, thankfully nothing that is not easy to avoid.
For something like ten years or so, I couldn't eat asparagus and even the smell made me feel faint, with clammy hands and the feeling that I couldn't breathe properly. The reason was that on a day where my stepmom cooked asparagus, I found six ticks on my legs, and anything that pierced the skin caused instant meltdowns. So: asparagus = ticks = overwhelming fear and anxiety. I started to eat asparagus again once I'd overcome my phobia. (By learning to inject myself, I've written about that in a comment to a different video.)
My main food issue is that eating is a stim for me, so I overeat and I'm obese. When I'm anxious, I don't even care how it tastes, I just need to feel the texture of the food. I'm trying to train myself to use chew toys instead, but the ones I have feel wrong in my mouth. Buying chew toys is pretty expensive, because the shipping cost to Germany is always so high, but I'm planning to order a variety of chew toys and see if there is one that's right for me.

What I'm curious about is what if you were born in a 3rd world country where everything isn't as pristine and easy to manage? Do you still think things that cause you anxiety would of still developed or would being born in such a place make achieving comfort impossible? It would be awesome if you made a video on this, keep making great content!👍🏼

People find creative ways around things. I used to eat the same thing every day for years, I still kind of do. I find something I can eat and stick to it. I doubt that would be a problem in a 3rd world country. People make options where there aren't any or just get very skinny. I am pretty skinny lol. In the west a lot of females with autism get misdiagnosed with anorexia, because of their issues with food. So different context, different perception of the same thing can happen.

When we got out for sometime to eat we have to research the menu beforehand to see what they have so I can see if there is something I can have. I was misdiagnosed with Asperger's when I mentioned to my counsellor that I don't eat meat. It's for ethical reasons. Not for taste and texture reasons. I'm in a complaints process, partly because the counsellor isn't qualified to diagnose and shouldn't have told me that I had it in any case. Apparently, if he suspects it, he should pass me on to a qualified person.

I'm on the autism spectrum and yes it is very common for us to have food issues. It was worse in my childhood because I was an extremely picky eater, I felt guilty because I didn't mean to be rude to anyone. Even restaurants have been a struggle because I was so hypersensitive, it's just what if the foods I liked had different sauces and textures and taste. I got lucky though because I began to grow out of it as I entered puberty or preteen years. My eating issues by then would stop, right?
Wrong. My puberty was a beginning of my overeating habits; cake, biscuits, crisps, sweets, and especially chocolate! And by then these new feelings were introduced, body image. That feeling has started when I was about 13 which I felt self conscious and I refused to get changed in the changing rooms, however I didn't let that ruin my love for food like chocolate was my life! Also the trampoline I used to have when I was 10 helped me maintain weight so my life has been pretty good, I maintained a balance between my trampolining and food addiction.
Well that was until my trampoline broke at the age of 15, and I lost balance. The trouble was I let my food addiction take over which has lead to weight gain, and when I was 16 I reached my highest weight. It was easy to tell from the pictures I had on my last day of school, a short while later I was told that I was in the overweight category. I was alarmed! Also after I turned 17 I was so jealous of how my other family members looked compared to me in the photos.
And that time was when I chose to battle my addiction and go on a diet. I became pescatarian (fish-eater), I ate less, and I joined the gym. I was planning and I did well, but it turned out I didn't have enough money to become a full gym member, so I relied more on my diet and the change of my habits. The more I got into it, the more I felt in control, I took some green tea pills to help me with my metabolism and overeating habits. It was a friendly healthy diet plan.
Time skip to when I entered adulthood and that was when my love for food has turned to pure hatred. I ran out of green tea pills and have started buying more diet pills back in black friday, the more effective ones this time and now I take more than one brand. My new years resolution for 2017 is to become as skinny as possible, I now have a scale and my diets have become more strict. It went from a healthy mediterranean to a calorie restrictive. My fear of gaining weight has gotten stronger, the feelings of guilt after I ate has gotten stronger, my desire to becoming thin has gotten stronger, my mind criticising me after I put on weight has gotten louder and now I care more about my looks than I do about my health. Getting skinny is my sign of willpower.
Instead of swallowing junk food I now chew and spit, this habit has recently started. Also I never told anyone I know about my diet pills. And that one time I was fasting I was disappointed when I didn't reach 24 hours. I realised that fasting didn't only make me feel happier just because I didn't eat, it was more than that, like a fasting high similar to the experience when people go on low-carb diets. My worries went away and it was more like a euphoria. These 2 reasons combined has encouraged me to eat less because every time I eat, I feel like a failure. Eat, feel guilty, eat, feel guilty. These calorie restrictive diets will break the cycle. The perfection and success is my goal.
This goes to show how these issues with food can change over time. I'm quite surprised that I have written this long comment. If someone has read this, thank you. Thank you for reading this. Hopefully my comment will show you how food issues can differ for each individual on the autism spectrum. My food issues are different than theirs just like their food issues are different than mine. If someone has went through these changes in timeline, this goes to show I'm not alone.

I am 17, and I can count the foods that have made up about 90% of my diet at some point on my two hands, and the foods that currently make up about 90% of my diet on one.
The seven foods that I have made up about 90% of diet at one point are cereal, English muffins/grilled cheese sandwiches(basically the same thing, just different bread), macaroni and cheese, ramen, mini pizzas, chicken, and PB&Js. I absolutley HATE saffron, squash, garlic and eggplant! The squishy wet textures also make me nauseus. And before being diagnosed, it was frustrating to my parents, since saffron is used in a traditional meal in my country, served every easter (And very loved by my family), and I couldn't have a bite without wanting to puke. But although I have those issues, I'm really open to explore new types of foods, flavors and textures. Also, I tend to like pasta and meat a lot more than any other kind of food. If it wasn't for my mom's salads, I probably would never eat vegetables and fruits.

Whenever I ate sandwich I would always have to have my bread toasted, I hated the texture of soft white bread for some reason. The only condiment I really hate is mayonnaise. I also oddly only like eggs if the yoke is runny. I hate when the yoke is over cooked. Whenever I’m eating something I don’t like I’ll gingerly eat it for a while but I’ll stop cause I feel like I’m torturing myself. But yet I hate when food falls a part.

Absolutely despise garlic. Fat (on meat) makes me gag if I'm not carful with it, I've developed a way of chewing it that makes it not as bad. Anything jelly like is a big nono. Cold food is fine but anything over lookewarm is a pass for me. I can drink soup but cant eat it with a spoon. Hate mars chocolate bars with a passion because they stick to the roof of my mouth, anything else that's sticky is very displeasing. When it comes to condiments I like ketchup but not mayo. Mayo and ketchup together makes me gag. Horseradish makes me gag. I dont eat anything sour or bitter. So far Im only diagnosed with ADHD, bet that's going to change (or not, maybe i'm that good at masking xD). Also, I used to eat same kind of lentil soup for months. Breaking that routine was very stressful and scary and had many meltdowns regarding that but it was well worth it. Now I dropped into a new routine regarding food. It's cream cheese, bread, meat and fruit.

With me with food I have trouble with other eating habits of people chewing very loud that if I don't have food in my mouth I will go nuts, but its just me. Anyone else have that sensory problem?

My mother made me try dragon fruit yesterday, and I am revolted by it. The texture is tarible.

I could eat chips or tortillas covered in cheese with crazy hot salsa every day all day so those things are only ever bought in small quantity and rarely, if it’s in the house nothing else is eaten till it’s gone. I used to make and eat that the min I got home from high school everyday, I am now 36 lol. I hate jello and marshmallows and I just can’t look at touch or smell raw meat without having issues so I’m pretty lucky to have a husband who likes cooking. I do however make myself (thanks to my mom) try everything once and do so with my daughter. I do love a lot of foods but if there is salsa in the house that is all I can think about and crave to eat XD

Spaghetti is the worst. PUDDING IS THE WORST (the color, texture, exact coldness, *shivers*)
I can't be around loud eaters. *shivers*
