  • There are a lots of stressful things in my life. Food is not one of them. Many people can't believe I would literally make myself the same breakfast, and lunch, and dinner, every day.
From my point of view this is a fantastic system! I love my food habit and I'm very happy to be sharing it with you today!

// WELCOME TO ASPERGERS FROM THE INSIDE!!
My name is Paul and I discovered I have Aspergers at age 30.
If you're new you can check out a playlist of some of my most popular videos here: / aspergersfromtheinside
Yes, I know, I don't look autistic. That's exactly why I started this blog, because if I didn't show you, you would never know.
As the name suggests, this channel is devoted to giving you insight into the world of Aspergers.
This blog started off being just my story, but I've learned SO MUCH about my own condition
from meeting others on the Autism Spectrum that now I make sure to feature their stories as well.
I've come a long way in my own personal journey.
Now I'm sharing what I've found so you don't have to learn it the hard way too.
    -----------------------------------------------
// WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THIS BLOG
I value your time which means there are NO RUclips ADS on my videos.
You can expect me to get to the point with concise useful information.
I focus on what is most important and don't shy away from difficult topics.
The best way to learn about Autism is to see it in real life ( i.e. via the stories of many, many people on the spectrum).
In this channel I endeavour to show you what Autism and Aspergers look like in real people and to also give you some insight as to what's happening on the inside.
I upload a new video every weekend with some bonus content thrown in mid-week too.
There's always new stuff coming through so be sure to check back and see what you've missed. (Is this where I'm supposed to tell you to hit that subscribe button?)
    Topics Include:
    What is Aspergers/Autism?
Aspie Tips, coping strategies, and advice on common issues
Learning Emotional Intelligence (this is my special interest!)
Autism in real life: stories from special guests
Everything I do is and endeavour to go deeper and take you 'behind the scenes' to understand what may, at first glance, seem 'odd'.
oh, and I love busting stereotypes and turning preconceptions upsidedown :)

I find it incredibly calming to put as much of my life on autopilot as possible. It saves my mental energy for more important things. I wear the same clothes every day (with some seasonal variation, obvs). I've cut my own hair the same way for about 15 years. And now I'm working towards doing the same with my diet.

ROUTEINS and FOOD: A Friend who was a nutrition expert, years ago, who knew I wanted to lose weight, told me to "Think of your tummy as a little oven", and only put enough into that "little oven" that you NEED, and don't eat just to be moving your jaw! (Course he said that about talking too,) but regardless-Since medication at night keeps me sleeping so soundly at night, and I don't have much of an appetite until about midnight---I take my vitamins with 2 cups of coffee for breakfast, a cup of soup for lunch,(bakery bread with real butter sometimes), and I caught myself enjoying peeling big plump mushrooms while watching videos---then not to spend allot of time in preparing and washing dishes..sprinkle some Fetta cheese with them on the spaghetti! Then I realized I was eating the same exact foods for over a MONTH, without feeling hungry-and it became a pattern! When we went buffet for some really good food for my Birthday-I couldn't eat it all-So, I selected mushrooms, some Fetta Cheese, put it on to a chicken breast-and watched every body else EAT! No weight problems here anymore-and the routine seems enjoyable. I think it's the "routine" I like, more than the FOOD! (I teach guitar by "Patterns" too-why bother with all those details!)

It makes a lot of sense to me. I get stressed when I have to think about what to eat and what to make when I don't want to spend my energy doing that. Sometimes I end up not eating because I simply don't want to spend the energy making anything. So having that thought taken out of the equation and knowing already what you will eat and not having to think about it would be majorly helpful.

I'm an unofficial aspie and I eat the same thing for maybe 85% of my meals. When my wife cooks there's variation but the food I prepare myself is very consistent and I don't get sick of it at all. There's no need to make any decisions.

Oooh, I know why! Executive function! Not having to think about what to make and not having to make a decision 😃. I normally will have 5 breakfast options available that I have ingredients for and don't have to think about how to make. When my kids were smaller we had the same 5 dinners every week each on a specific day for that reason. We'd change it up every 2-3 years.

Even as an aspie this sounds a bit extreme to me, haha. I like routine when it comes to food, but I also have ADHD which comes with some lust for adventure and variety in a few areas of my life, one of them being food. I'm a foodie and love to cook many different meals. But when I'm busy I quickly become overwhelmed and lose all desire to cook complex meals and then I tend to meal prep the same types of meals for many weeks, which quickly starts to bore me to tears. I'm an aspie who likes routine and an ADHD'er who likes variety at the same time and it's really hard lol.

I now have about 5 different meal salads or other one dish meals that I make in 3-4 day portions before switching to another recipe so I don't get overwhelmed with multiple dishes and unexpected tastes but also have more variety every few days to appease the ADHD :)

I found this really helpful as an autistic person who struggles with my diet. It made me feel less guilty for eating the same thing a lot. I actually love cooking, and can experiment. But once I find something that works, I tend to stick with it. Currently my main food is grilled tempeh marinated in Tamari and spices, with cooked spinach with nuritional yeast, and jasmine rice with a bit of coconut milk in it. I came here to Guatemala and bought the same ingredients and am eating my tempeh now.

  • @charimonfanboy
    @charimonfanboy 6 лет назад +64

Why would anyone stray from a consistent meal routine? You never have to worry about what you can make for tea, you never have to deal with unfamiliar textures, you never have to deal with planning for meals, you never have to deal with indecision over what to eat, you can plan your shopping trips in detail and never have to change what to get, how much to get, how much it will cost and when you need to go.
Very sensible of you to make your own food too, I depend on Asda having the exact brand and flavour of frozen meals that I get and I know that my life is going to suck if they run out or otherwise stop selling a meal I depend on or, even worse, change something about the way they make it, like less cheese or how thick they slice something.

Variety in food is what many people find exciting, but not all. Your statement is assuming that what is true for you is true for all, and that's not accurate. Eating the same thing everyday is not necessarily about stress or anxiety at all. To the contrary, people love their favorites, and that can be the great motivating factor for eating the same foods all the time.

    • @injunsun
      @injunsun 4 года назад

Why stray? Because there is a world of ingredients, and proper nutrition isn't accidental. I get some favourites, but being too strict can miss vitamins and minerals vital for proper health, as well as possibly contributing to global issues, such as Climate Change and animal cruelty. So there are many good reasons to attempt variations.

great videos :) I have done a preliminary diagnosis and was told I was on the spectrum, and I suddenly understood my whole life of misunderstandings and trying to fit in, and regularly losing my jobs. I usually don't eat breakfast, only a cup of coffee. If i eat breakfast it will be pasta bolognese, or a steak or like a dinner dish. For lunch and dinner it must be warm food, otherwise my day is ruined. When I was a student, sometimes i made huge bologneses and salads and froze them in 30 plastic bags, so I could eat the exact same thing for thirty days. Now I understand why haha

I really appreciate you sharing this! I feel so much pressure around food because I have a son who doesn’t enjoy eating the same things every day. I still often make the same few things for dinners but he’s getting especially tired of my stir fries that I could eat every day. To me, all of the choices of food is overwhelming and it’s an area of my life where I feel like I’m supposed to do something different than what I feel naturally inclined to do. I’d eat the same things for every meal and often do when I’m on my own. Or I’m on a rotation of a few favorites that I make. I find in my life that I often eat the same things to the point of getting burnt out on them and then switch and so on. But I really feel like I could eat a stir fry of some kind for every dinner.

Yes this makes sense. THIS is what body builders and athletes do all the time. Being Aspie is no different - well, maybe only in motivation. Talk about a clean monthly food budget; that would be super fun to chart inflation.
Have you done a video on control? When nero-typical people try to control Aspie behavior and why? I struggle to articulate why I don't appreciate other people trying to suggest they know better than I do how to be me. You would think with all the philosophies on "be your own person" Aspergers would fall into that some place...but maybe not. *shrugs shoulders*

I totally relate to this! Thank you for sharing your super sandwich recipe, Paul! That helped me come to terms with my own food habits. Your super sandwich recipe looks delicious, and I'll definitely need to try it at home!
I'm an Aspie, and I still remember being picked on for only eating hot dogs and fries when I was a kid. I was usually called picky, and I didn't know why at the time.
Once I started to pinpoint my sensory triggers with food, both the ingredients in the meals themselves and the environmental factor, I've gradually developed a better grasp on which samefoods work for me, and which occasional treats hit the spot.
Since lockdown started, my samefoods for breakfast consists of eggs and toast prepped in a few different ways, and with bacon or ham on the side. In a pinch, I swap out my breakfast with either a protein shake or oatmeal. For lunch, I'll usually make a chicken stir fry recipe with mixed vegetables and rice prepped in batches, beef burritos (rice or tortillas as a base), and a few other recipes. Meal prepping helps to reduce my decision fatigue, which makes prepping for lunch much easier since I can leave dinner as a time to experiment with other recipes.

I went thru a phase of eating the same foods for approximately 6 months and they were some of the best/easiest times ever so *I TOTALLY UNDERSTAND THIS!!!*
I'd been off work, short term sick, and put a fair amount of weight on and needed to lose it so I settled on a small number of calorie controlled & balanced meals. I ate the same food for breakfast and work and alternated between 2 meals at home or eating at my then girlfriends house but always at the same meal when I was home. Buying the same foods meant there were no shopping dilemmas, I shopped earlier to avoid crowds and I felt better than I had in years due to not having mind clutter and issues that no longer needed thought.
Unfortunately, I was then made redundant (2008 - financial crisis) and my carefully engineered plans buckled without having a job or being able to find another under the circumstances and I've struggle since with more life events troubling me even further.

As Neurotypical I dont find this weird at all to some it might but hey routine is good .I work with little kids and routine is necessary if not bad things will happen lol. Aspies are like kids they need the routine because if things change just a little it throws you off and makes you feel anxious and change is very scary .If you feel comfortable with your routine why change it?? Neurotypicals should be more understanding of the Aspies routine .

But I really want to be nice to my body so lately I have tried to put in the extra effort. I have adhd so it can make things difficult.

Initial effort can pay off big time, as following the same recipe becomes _a lot_ easier after just a few times.
Maybe you can get someone to help you cook the meal a couple of times, to lower the barrier?
Standardisation will help both the cooking and the shopping.
With adhd thrown in you may want to choose something that can be varied infinitely arround a basic recipe (or five) to keep things non-boring ;-)
Curries and/or stirfrys springs to mind.

I didn’t realize this was an Aspie thing! In college I ordered the same lunch at Moe’s (like Subway but for burritos) for 3 years straight. It got to the point where I just got in line and they made my meal in front of me without me having to say a word. I’m sure those around me must have been wondering whether I had ESP or something lol
I think I will always have a repetitive meal for at least one of my three meals a day, just because I enjoy the consistency. In fact, because I eat them so much, I become attuned to very subtle changes, and so the meal is different every time, especially when things like fruit are involved whose flavor is more variable over time.

I used to sometimes do the NYC "grab the crap bagel w. cream cheese and coffee" from the corner truck because I simply had little time to eat a real breakfast. It was more out of
time constraints than anything else. The problem with that is tending towards eating too much fast food and McDs and all that, too often. The routine in the 80s when I was in HS
was either eat cereal at home or whatever, or go to the deli near school for some fabulous, healthy egg on a roll sandwiches! So healthy!

  • @archienness

The "evolution" thing is significant, I think. It's very much like a steady refinement or working towards perfection. It may also be the idea that those self-imposed constraints provide the framework for highlighting subtle or tiny differences. Like writing sonnets - the stringently controlled form allows for ingenuity, creativity and appreciation to develop within the small spaces. It's a kind of miniaturisation. Autistic sensitivities require constraints (routines) to tamp down the "noise" and provide frameworks for productivity and creativity.
I eat the same foods every day, but I have minute differences and rotations. Sometimes my salad will be lunch and sometimes dinner (a complicated mix of leaves and vegetables with a central anchor of fish or chicken). I have a fruit salad every day at lunch (seasonal fruits cut in chunks with a dollop of vanilla or lemon yoghurt - rotationally). I have a rotating list of cereals that I will eat everyday 1. base layer: muesli or granola. 2. mid-layer: sultana bran or fruit & fibre. 3. top layer: corn flakes or Special K. This gives me the right balance between variation and routine. Going on 20 years with the cereal system. Wonder if I'm an Aspie. ;-)

I have had the same breakfast for 4 years now, when I can. Two fried eggs, galantine or bacon or sausages, rye bread with butter, coffee with milk. During spring I add radish salad. I can eat anything else, but when I can, I switch back. I never thought about reasons for doing that, all my life I have had months of eating the same thing every day. But the fact that it frees up thinking resources could be it. No need for decision making. I used to love wearing the same thing to school every day as well. I laugh every time my mom comes into kitchen in the morning and asks - what did you have for breakfast? Like I would suddenly make something else. I do enjoy occasionaly having something different, but most of the times I immediately feel it is not better. I love the way your sandwitch looks. Will have to try it out :)

Yesss, finally someone else who truly appreciates the beauty of having the same meals everyday! Have you considered using vegan substitutes for some ingredients like plant-based milks/cheeses? Not here to judge, I totally understand wanting to stick to comfort ingredients as a fellow person on the spectrum. But if you're open to swapping some ingredients (don't have to make it 100% vegan necessarily), it's really helpful for the environment. Love your videos as always :)

vegansauce Hey! Fellow vegan Aspie here 😊 Also an INTJ and eat basically the same 2 or 3 variations of WFPB meals daily. The routine of eating the same things is just as important as all my other routines. When I was a kid I freaked out if we went to someone else's place for dinner and I couldn't have my regular food and I still do. I discovered Veganism 7 years ago and it has opened up a whole new world to me and I have noticed quite a high number of Aspies are vegan and INFJ or TJ.

OMG ! This video is the 4th or 5th I have just kept company with, and have only, tonight been introduced to you, ever; never knowing you or anything about your experiences, surviving in this upside down world...and as soon as you made your lunch, I felt, MY TRIBE ! LOL. I believe that the complexities I've experienced surviving in a foreign to me land, has made me look so forward to my heaven on earth...my breakfast. I go to sleep looking forward to it. I wake up excited about it. I savor every tiny bite of it, it's preparing, it's cleaning up afterwards, it's discipline, it's order. Want to know what I make? I poach an egg that sits upon 1 half piece of multigrain toast, fig preserve and a slice of stilton. French press strong black coffee, and a 1965 sized glass for 'some pulp" orange juice.
This is my sanctity. My sensory and most grateful moment of every day. Of course, it requires alterations when on ingredient has been absent. I adjust.
My personal belief is that our living creator designed us in HIS image and likeness. That means each of us is very unique and unlabeled, yet so alike, we need to be noticed; appreciated, as such.

It's the food thing that really made my Lightbulb switch on. I always thought I was just an odd kid and a fussy eater. I have to actively want to eat something or I just can't, when I'm stressed I get more restricted and even when all is good I eat the same few options again and again until I fancy something else which can sometimes take up to a year. At my worst I can't eat at all or just have a big packet of crisps (same flavour / brand etc, has to be the £1 bags because they have more flavour and so on) and I get stressed and slightly panicked if I can't find the bits I need in stock.

You have got the right idea. People always ask me, "how can you eat the same lunch every day?" I always answer, I can because I am hungry. Eating the same breakfast, and lunch everyday is an effective way of maintaining dietary discipline, especially since I report to a daily job. I wake up a zombie, then I immediately prepare my healthy breakfast, and healthy lunch salad without even thinking. Conversely, not planning my meal until I am already hungry always ends in my eating junk food. I also really enjoy routine. I don't think I have Asperger's, but if I do I am in good company.

I love a wide variety of good food, and interesting restaurants, and finding the best food is a primary activity when I travel.
But at home... I eat almost the same thing every day - especially breakfast (granola+yogurt+blueberries). For lunch or supper, I eat the same 3-4 things in rotation. I _always_ eat fresh arugula, even if that means stuffing a fistsful of it in my mouth every time I pass by the fridge. My shopping list is extremely consistent.
This isn't because I want to eat only a few things, but rather because I've found a few delicious things that I can prepare quickly with neither planning nor conscious effort. Along with wearing the same color scheme every day (black/grey shirt w/ olive pants), uniformity of meals is part of how I manage the sensory overload of decisions.

Szechuan pork and boiled rice practically every day I can afford it. If not that I will have chips or 'mayo tuna sweetcorn and pasta'. I occasionally eat different things, mainly if I am with someone I am with often (to avoid having them ask why I eat pretty much the same thing every day). Most days I eat alone anyway so it's not an issue, I can indulge my simplicity (plus I don't have to worry about nutrition, it seems to have it all as I am not dead yet but I could probably do with some upgrades to the tuna pasta mayo sweetcorn combo). :p

Both of those look like meals I would enjoy eating everyday. I found that because my life tends to be so busy, I really like cutting out unneeded decision points. Back before the pandemic, I used to organize my clothing so I would wear the same outfit on the same day each day of the week because I felt that choosing my outfit was a waste of my mental energy and time. I ended up doing a similar thing with my breakfast because I bike commuted to work each day. I didn't have a lot of time, so I would pour steel cut oats and chopped kale into a thermos along with the leftover hot water from my morning coffee. I used Bragg's liquid aminos for seasoning and savory oatmeal would be my breakfast every day. I find that when you do the same meal everyday you can get really good at making it just right. There isn't that frustration of screwing up the meal because it is unfamiliar and new.

I used to do this, but my youngest can not stand the same meal within a 2 week space (And my oldest (6) would have cheese with pasta (Not mixed. A block of cheese next to his plain pasta) with a vegan hotdog (Frys brand) every day for lunch and dinner given the chance. 😂 Now I just don't really eat. Maybe once a day if I'm lucky.
My body just doesn't remind me to eat, and it has to be something with a high 'reward value' or I just can not bring myself to put it in my body. Huel shakes are the most helpful thing so far as they're over and done with really quickly but they're still a big challenge for me to make and consume due to the lack of reward from it.
Need to find myself a new 'every day' meal. So far it looks to be lentils, rice, tomato puree, garlic and onions (Blended) topped with cheese. Makes a very easy texture for me to handle and I like the tomato and cheese taste. But it takes time and effort to cook the lentils and rice every few days and I don't often get the time. If it isn't hot I can't eat it, either. All 3 of my kids are neurodivergent (3, 4.5 and 6) and 3 is often putting himself into a lot of danger, so I just don't get the time. I know I can't keep just not eating, I know I can't just live off sugar either.
I can live with most of my autistic traits, accept and make peace or compromise with them. My inability to eat and the lack of signals to eat or drink, I don't think I'll ever be able to be okay with. It takes so much energy to fight and I have to fight it allll the time. If I go to start making food and something gets in the way, I usually can not go back to it. And I get distracted a lot (Because childten). Feel like I just can't win.
