  • All the way from LA, Rob is joined by legendary British comedian and actor John Cleese! They talk about John’s experiences working with Ronnie Corbett and Ronnie Barker, his love of Beyond The Fringe and performing to audiences of 16,000 at the O2 with Monty Python Live. They also discuss the use of taboo subjects to generate the biggest laughs, how a lack of distraction is imperative for creativity, and how he's currently writing a musical version of A Fish Called Wanda with John Du Prez.

I love all Rob's interviews, but I'm tickled pink to listen to him chat with one of my idols! I'm tuning in Thursday instead of Friday (it's my end-of-the-week treat), because I'm creatively stuck and avoiding the next chapter of my book. And here's Mr. Cleese, whose words of advice have helped me so often in the past, suggesting it's okay to be blocked and simply to forgive myself while my unconscious works things out. Talk about receiving the right message at the right time, and relieving me of guilt for watching videos instead of writing! Thanks, Rob! Thanks, John!

My fave interview yet. The irony with Cleese's observation on creativity was that he studied law at Cambridge. If he hadn't discovered Footlights and channeled his creative bent he could have ended up becoming a successful yet non-creative lawyer. Thank god he found comedy and comedy found him. This was an excellent chat, really enjoyable and a little thought provoking too.

“The end of deference” began with Cook’s impressions of the PM ... I thought about this some months back and it seems you can trace the modern state of comedy and even politics back to that moment, good and bad. I’m sure there’s a doctoral thesis in there somewhere!

I like watching these because no matter who Rob interviews...a younger person, his own contemporaries or a legend like this...he's a great active listener and does these less like a regular interview and more like a conversation. He isn't reading from cards with questions on them. He does mention what he's read or heard about his subjects, but whether he fully plans his questions or not, it seems somewhat spontaneous. This is especially true when he builds off of what the person has said. Here Cleese seemed to really enjoy the conversation and the connection through their mutual understanding, even though he's old enough to be Rob's dad.
