GR Yaris startup regime..... hold the lane warning for 5 secs and turn it off, the top button by the gear stick press off, the bottom button same place press off, hit the back button on wheel left side to get rid of annoying notifications. Turn dial to track above gear stick. Enjoy. Oh another fun thing... if you get a runner that runs over to a trafic island as you do as a runner but stops to let you pass by the Yaris CAN slam the anchors on predictively. THAT hits hard cause those anchors are large.
I know this road really well as I live locally in Kent, & it is a challenging drive at the best of times, so I certainly wouldn’t want modern technology such as “lane guidance assist” to contend with! Fortunately I drive an 8 year old Kia with only one annoying feature…”engine stop/start (ISG)”. Incidentally the wooded section is notorious for deer strikes!
In my GR Yaris it has became muscle memory to now, start the car, hit the back button on the left hand side of the steering wheel to remove the message about excessive acceleration while cold, followed by a long press and hold of the Lane departure button on the right hand side of steering wheel. Then I leave all other nannies on for day to day drive.
Most folks switch it all off before setting off. Very distracting technology. Lots of L663 Defender owners buy a GAP IID G4 Bluetooth and then reflash the ECU so all that stuff is switched off. Lots of companies can do it for you too. Beauty of the GAP is it’s also a code reader, service reset etc. Not cheap but it’s superb and keeps its resale value.
Good video Richard, thanks. Will be interesting to see how you adapt to this brave new world of assisted driving. My car was in to my local Porsche Specialist on Friday for tracking, following unfortunate meetings with loads of potholes. The courtesy car the lent me was a 24 Golf. I turned on all the aids - what a nightmare to drive!
AEB on my Macan is a pain. I've got it switched off permanently. It picks up people walking on the pavement on very slight curves in the road and slams on the brakes. My Macan is a 2021 model and I can switch off the features permanantly so I don't have to do it every drive. I think later year models you have to switch them off every time you start the car.
The lane departure warning on the GRY is very intrusive, but at least you can turn it off with a single button press. The automatic BRAKE warning is a bit intrusive too, but that doesn't activate too often. Apart from that, I don't find the systems intrusive on this car. I've just decided to switch the automatic headlights off because swapping between the GRY and my other car which doesn't have automatic dipping headlights is something I can't adapt to. As an aside, I bought my first car from one of the first houses on the left after you turned out of the crematorium.
Never been convinced by many of the “driving aids” switched off lane assist on day 1 in my TT and it’s never been back on since. I guess some aids have been useful, ABS, stability control and parking sensors….
There are some good ones Andy, stop start is one that was not great especially you get a junction to pullout and it cuts the engine! Brake assist is good idea but it needs better software
My current car (a Mini) has lane departure. I use it on the motorway but otherwise it is turned off. It has no audible, just a rumble through the steering wheel. Works well imo as it is unobtrusive enough to not annoy. The collision alert has an audible warning and I do get false alarms (in medium setting) which far from helping imo, they cause “alarm” when not needed. But I do have this on all the time though. I’ve yet to experience the pedestrian alert going off. Maybe my observational skills and anticipation don’t give it a chance! I feel that some of the systems may well have their place in perfect road environments, with good road width and markings, good road surfaces, no puddles to dodge etc. These systems are not tailored to the tricky roads we have in the South East and potentially then the driver will have them switched off, ignored, or they will form their own “hazard” that the driver then has to interpret. Btw, I know the Bayham Road well from my sailing days travelling to Bewl, I used to enjoy it greatly… before the nanny state stepped in though. Just watch out for the deer.
I moved from Tonbridge to cornwall two years ago. So I enjoyed this video seeing familiar roads from usually running the boys around for football or scouts. I'm on my second tesla model s and to keep up with all the legislation the EU keep introducing more and more driving aids that make the car far less enjoyable to drive and more intrusive. Thankfully all but one of them once turned off stay off. Also the autopilot which I use only on long trips on motorways used to be much better but again the law makers made it give up on certain degree of bends or cancel auto lane changes in short time. My sons 20 year old micra i can just get in and drive!
I despise looking at a bank of screens, it just reminds me of being at my desk at work, the opposite of what I want when I finish the day. It's also ergonomically dangerous. This is the one time where I want some regulation because drivers are now spending a lot of time, eyes off road, tapping screen menus.
@Challengetheroad A study should really be done and the 4/5 most commonly used functions such as radio, heater controls etc should not be touch screen controlled. It should be made law that you have to be able to operate these systems without taking your eyes off the road.
@@ChallengetheroadAlternatively they could just try putting the speedo and rev counter etc on the dash in front of the driver, maybe have dedicated switches instead of touch screens and voice activated sh*te, you never know it might catch on or am I just a philistine? 😂Thankfully having to turn off ‘driver aids’ aren’t an issue in my analogue 22 year old daily drive, but very annoying in the wife’s newer car☹️ PS where has the temp gauge gone in a lot of modern cars?
@@brutusoftroy2810 What’s this new fangled sphere thing, you’ll be telling me next that there is a climate catastrophe and that the ‘gas of life’ carbon dioxide is a pollutant, where’s that roll of tin foil gone👍🤣🤣🤣
That stretch used to be a 60 with a 30 by the garage and houses. For some unknown reason they've now slowed that whole stretch down to 50 but put the speed up by the area you're likely to encounter pedestrians. 🤔
I've had two Yaris as courtesy cars (not GR's unfortunately) and the assist systems were awful, far too safe, even at their most lax settings. Ironically I now have a Lexus which I presume is going to be at least similar being Toyota group, yet it's really good. Doesn't bleep at me when I drive close to parked cars, doesn't panic on back roads, it's the first system I'm actually happy to leave switched on.
The simple stuff can be really effective: for example brake boosting. But the more complicated stuff that relies on sensors like radar or traffic sign recognition is half-baked. The problem is the false alarms and the false positive paradox undermines the potential benefits. Unfortunately this is driven by regulation and likely to get more intrusive. For now the sensitivity level can be turned down.
I have a focus Vignale with drivers assist. This system fails to work in Wales when it reads a 20mph sign. The system just turns off allowing me to speed. Ford refuse to fix this and refuse to talk to me about this. Would love to show the world how this system fails and that ford Uk dismiss this failed technology
I always turn off lane & speed assist. Driving along a 60 mph road with the HUD showing 20mph and continuous warning bleeps sounding off is not acceptable. Worse of all is emergency braking. Driving in Somerset last October, along a road with no parked cars, no oncoming traffic, no cyclists or pedestrians and no reason to brake, the car brakes with a warning on the HUD. Fortunately the car behind managed to stop, I hope he was wearing his brown trousers.
Don’t like the modern Driver aids either too distracting and tugging at the wheel when this mistake road joints for white lines… Regarding your Defender video - just watched a Car Magazine review on the OCTA, that’s got to be a car for you, tough as old boots and ideal for your adventures you talked about….
All these unnecessary systems just turn people into morons and pay less attention to the conditions and more likely to have an accident. The fact that the muppets in Brussels don't understand basic human psychology is worrying. This is also why there is such a large community against being forced to buy EVs. Most of us knew how to cope with snow and ice long ago but now most don't.
Your commentary driving is nowhere near the standard needed for an Advanced Driving Test or training to be a police response driver. You never mentioned what signs you'd seen, changes to road markings, chevron boards on corners etc. not did you show any road positioning to get better visibility around bends or any sign of looking into T-junctions for cars coming out.
Your channel came up as recommended yesterday, this is now the 4th video I’m watching & subbed straight away. Love the content!
Thank you, really enjoying making the videos and some crackers coming up!

Adaptive cruise is a good feature for motorway driving, all the rest of the bings & bongs need to be disabled.

There are some cars that annoy the hell out of you but the ADAS on latest Renaults is really chill and easy to get on with.
1st thing I do is turn off Lane Assist - when driving down winding Country Roads last thing you need is someone grabbing the steering !

My gr Yaris is the model with out all the driver aid still has the key start , much better.
My Renault Clio the same and no fuss!
@ yep just jump in and drive
I wouldn't be using any of that tech on country roads. On the motorway it makes sense and is useful.
I am 100% just using self driving this week and then going to give more feedback. Motorways are coming on next videos
