      If someone has no nostalgic attachment I think this looks like best way to play Myst. That said the lighting doesn't seem to set the same mood, and some of the details in the "glamorous" areas seem to be more sparse, however the world detail in general has been increased. I think the old method of putting FMV into the games was actually really effective way to bring realism and a stage like performance into the games. The effort put into this looks like it brings things to a modern standard and the most worthy remake since the original.

      Its good, but don't expect fast paced. Its a slow puzzle, but you feel rewarded every time you move forward. You may want to cheat (look on line for answers) for the submarine direction puzzle, its confusing. Other than that, I did complete the game. The original one I mean.

      Well, that’s a good question, or a difficult question. There is some intelligence involved. You should also keep a pen and paper next to you to jot down a few small notes. I think it originally took me about 30 - 40 hrs, but I was new to gaming. I did cheat and look on line to solve the submarine direction puzzle. If you have time, it’s a good game. If you easily lose interest in things, you may give up. It like I said on an earlier comment, it is satisfying when you figure out a puzzle. There are no instructions. You are just plopped on an island and it’s up to you to figure things out. Not easy. But I did really like this game.

    • @MattGiuca
      @MattGiuca  4 года назад +1

      Hmm, I agree on the original version. I think realMyst mitigated it just fine, by making the window bigger, the segments much faster, and adding variety to the animations (different twists and turns). I think it'll be really cool in VR.
      Maybe they could reduce the size of the maze a little, or even make it bigger but make the winning path shorter, so it's harder to brute force, but if you know what you're doing, you can get through quicker.

    1. At 1:43 is that rug on the floor supposed to be missing in 2020?
    2. At 2:10 stoneship compass you've lost a lot of the deep green gloom of stoneship in 2020 version. The water outside should look more like the 2014 version no?
    3. At 2:18 Achenar's stoneship room has lost some atmosphere due to overlighting?
    4. At 2:24 The 2020 Stoneship version seems much more daytime than the 1993 twilight and the 2014 night version. Is there a day/night cycle? It will lose atmosphere hugely otherwise. Also the lighthouse, the balcony added which might be cool in VR, does affect the aesthetics of the building hugely, it's less imposing, and 'speaks' to you less.

    • @MattGiuca
      @MattGiuca  4 года назад

      Yeah a lot of those things are lighting issues and I expect they'll do a lighting pass to help with the mood in some of these places. It seems blown out in a few places, like Myst library. Note that those last two Stoneship images are from the RoadToVR blog, which got "exclusives" that aren't in the main marketing. They seem less finished.
      I actually hated the look of Stoneship in RMME; it's always dark and miserable. The shot here is closer to the original Myst. I don't mind the lighting here.

      1. These are beta screenshots, because looking at them, some of the elements are missing, like untextured surfaces, or missing objects.
      2. To me, they got the visual design of those windows wrong in RMME. From what I've seen, you only get a funhouse image-bending effect if the surface of the glass is curved with water behind it. The water in certain other places also didn't look correct either, like it was made out of Jello or something.

    • @Mike14264
      @Mike14264 3 года назад +2

      Yeah, the Stoneship age is kinda foggy and pretty stormy in the original and the 2000 version, but it's absolutely miserable and full on dark and rainy in the RMME. I liked the rain part, and I don't mind the gloomy aspect (after all, it's completely deserted, even though the desolation in there is nowhere near as bad as in the Mechanical and especially the Channelwood Ages), but could they make it a little bit lighter? It's stormy, but it isn't night!

    Quite frankly when you compare these the 1993 version (although not as details) did the best with the tech they had in 1993 and did quite a good job. 2020 has much more detail and while 1993 had less I still can still see what they are trying to represent. I think in some way you can leave much to imagination. It seems the 2020 opening was "Hollywoodized" with just presenting how much detail they could when displaying the book detail/spine word embossing (MYST). Some of the versions looked graining and washed out while the 1993 was clear and crisp.

      please do... it's so difficult to find images of the original online, and it looks so much more beautiful than masterpiece edition (obviously, my opinion)

      One of the answers posted this zoomed comparison: satrapov.net/mysst/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Comparison.jpg
      I think you could find it and get it working in ScummVM if you were dedicated enough.

    Nice one, but you forgot the iPad version, the best looking version IMHO.

    • @MattGiuca
      @MattGiuca  3 года назад

      True, but the iOS version used the same underlying engine (Unity) and assets to realMyst Masterpiece Edition, albeit the latter was significantly improved.
      In fact, the Unity version went through many changes: iPad, iPhone, Android (which all look fairly similar to each other), RMME 2014, and RMME 2015 (which is a significant graphical upgrade). I expect soon there'll be major graphical differences between the Quest and PC versions. I'm just trying to capture the differences between the full rebuilds.

      The iPad version sadly enough does not have the real time day/night changes. It should be mentioned that my iOS version is limited to a 32 bit version 10.3 tablet. Also, the Riven version has no water animation effects. Were these updated in 64 bit iOS 14 editions which have metal rendering or are they the same?

    • @MattGiuca
      @MattGiuca  3 года назад

      @@NoirpoolSea Nah, the iOS and Android ports never had real time day/night or weather effects. Those were a sort of "in between" version where it was built from scratch in Unity, but on a budget and for, at the time, very limited hardware. Years later, the same version was spruced up into realMyst Masterpiece Edition on PC.

      @@MattGiuca I disagree with you Matt. For me, the IOS version is the best because it's based on the original RealMyst but with upgraded visuals, new textures, shadowmaps, shader effects. For me, Masterpiece edition changes too much, it looks plasticky and too vibrant. I'm also not a fan of the day-night cycle, it doesn't add anything to the game nor the atmosphere. The lighting conditions in each level was carefully selected by the devs, this is totally ruined by having a day night cycle.

    Isn't it the most remaked game ever ? 2014 was pretty cheap by the way

    • @MattGiuca
      @MattGiuca  3 года назад

      Possibly! Yeah 2014 was a bit rough, owing to the relative immaturity of Unity, the fact that it was coming from a rather old codebase (it was brought up from the 2009 iPad version, not built from scratch), and possibly just other priorities (work on Obduction). I'm hopeful that the new 2021 version will be a lot more polished, but some of the above apply again this time.

    2020 version of Myst looks a bit ugly though very realistic in some parts. Not interested in a remake then a remaster version. I am totally avoiding it though I am interested in a Riven remastered since taking away immersion is terrible idea for a remake imo.

      Note that this is pre-release images and several of them look quite half-baked in terms of the lighting and textures. Let's see the final product before writing it off.
