- On a negative 1ft tide in the evening, I forage and fish for my dinner and cook it up right there on this rocky beach.

I worked on urchin dive boats in the 90s, that urchin is LOADED. Absolute top quality, hasn't spawned and gotten milky yet. Cargo hold of that would get a special flight from the processor and be in Japan in 14 hours bringing in top dollar. Amazing catch there, no way to know until you open them up. You scored big time, no one in the world ate better uni that day.
Thats just mind blowing to me. Its like walking through the seafood section of the supermarket. Cant believe how much food you were able to collect in just a few hours and still manage to take drone shots, cook, set up cameras and underwater cam shots. Youre an excellent RUclipsr!!
Philosophy D, fishermens life, and outdoor chef life always have great content
wonder how fishermens life foot is coming along
Smash Fishing is pretty good too
The fish locker is another top lad
@Farard Elder no body need you run along
@@squeento yeah
That drone shot of you looking over the cliffs was epic. 👏👏👏
I absolutely love how if you are willing to live simply, you can eat like a king and have a happy life with no stress, if you let nature provide for you, but dont get greedy.
I used to do that here in san pedro, southern California. Me and my friends did a lot of catch and cook.
Mussels, fish, lobsters,rock crabs.
Nothing better than eating fresh seafood
"I'll save this for my friends" is coed for, "I'm throwing this nastiness away." 🤣🤣
Lol
I love how youre not worried about the parasites but especially love how you put back the smaller crab. Well done. Keep it up.
All animals, sea or land, have parasites. Be more afraid of mechanized farmed animals and fish fed antibiotics and antiparasitic medicines.
People have parasites too 😉
When harvesting uni the flavor comes from the type of seaweed that its been eating. If you dont like uni and want to try a way of preping it next time. Open it scoop out the gonads and soak it in purified water that is salty like the ocean. Peel any loose membrane of the pieces and try it with a little drop of sushi vinegar. Try it this way next time.
Did that kind of fishing for 40 plus years, now's when you'll find big cabezons under the rocks, they should be finishing up spawning about now. Lings also will be under the big ledges and holes. Once you catch a big female in a nice spot, check it every season, you might be surprised. I used straight 50lb mono all the time, Ultra Green maxima, I rarely lose the big ones. Good Luck, enjoy, be careful, and be thankful for being blessed.
Michael Carter I always release the spawning fish though, just to ensure there will be a next generation
@@vincegolder4560 Nice gesture, sporty. Being that I have a big asian american family, that loves seafood, they come first. It's Fish and Game job to set regulations that work. Plus I pay hundreds of dollars for the right to catch my food.
Sorry for having respect for nature. Its fish and games job to set statewide regulations, but its up to the individual to make sure spots don't become overfished and to practice good morals. Just because it's legal, doesn't mean its right, after all, its legal to keep 7 inch rockfish, but most if not all fishermen know that's wrong. Paying for a fishing license doesn't make you special, all fishermen do. It also doesn't excuse poor morals. You really aren't setting a good precedent, considering how defensive you got about me suggesting releasing spawning fish. People like you are the reason spots become overfished and dry.
@@vincegolder4560 Who keeps 7 inch rockfish? Every female fish is a potential spawning fish. If you marvel at all the species of fish and release them, then you must believe in God's way, Great! Take a long range trip out of San Diego, Morro Bay, or Oxnard and marvel at the eat or be eaten mindset of all the fish, if a fish slows down, it get eaten by a bigger fish, and he in turns gets eaten by an even bigger fish. It happens like crazy right in front of you, and It's been going on since the beginning of time. People have been eating fish since the beginning. Do you know how many MLP closed areas spots you can't fish? Research them if your worried about the fish. If you say your spots are overfished and dry, then you must either can't fish, or don't know where to. I 'm just standing up for my right to catch my food, and my spots are not overfished, I catch all the fish I want.
Love Maxima line.
You are a good man. Always like watching your videos. Cheers from Los Angeles.
Dude, you are making me cry. I miss Maui and wish I could transport myself to my favorite beach cove. I'd be snorkeling and gathering my lunch of opihi, spear a couple of fish and possibly a good size tako or octopus. Great video, man...really enjoyed it! My buddies and I use to night dive and harvest tako and lobster. Of course the sharks were around so we always paired up to watch each other' s six. One of us would remain in camp to keep the fire going and prepare the coals for placing any fish directly on the them. Man, so much fun to eat fresh fish right off the coals with hashish, drink adult beverages and talk story.
I miss my time in Hawaii also, worked at Barbers Point Tower, many good cherished memories, plus talking story was fabulous!
When I was a kid, I was out foraging for rock crab and found this MONSTER male under this rock. Being stupid and overzealous, I immediately go to grab it and fling it in my bucket, but instead it grabbed the end of my thumb and just absolutely crushed it, not letting go. So I go to grab the claw with the other hand and it grabs my other thumb!!!
So now you can imagine this 12 year old kid flailing around this crab and screaming, while my uncle (RIP) was just watching and laughing.
I got the last laugh, however. I ate that crab.
if you ate that crab then it didn't crush your thumb lol. you'd be on your way to the hospital if that happened. maybe it pinched it a bit though.
@@kalfaxplays7899 just enjoy the story, I enjoyed it !
Great Video, its amazing to see the respect and compassion for what you are eating, taking only what you need when tempted by such abundance and not succumbing to greed. some will never understand the mental healing and escapism from the stresses of life doing what you have just done, even if it's just for one afternoon here and there, it is priceless
I agree, I would be well tempted by the abalone
Wowie i found this on my recommendation list and i clicked not expecting much but this video is really good!
I always love your videos and I love how the fact that you always tried cheering people up
The beginning of this video was beautiful.. the ocean side with the cliffs
Seriously my favorite part of the entire video
One of the best youtube fishing and scenery channels out. Love your videos man
Oh my gosh. This footage is always so amazing. I've been binge-watching the videos.
Love your channel....keep up a good job...watching from Melbourne Australia...
Awesome video! Been waiting for you to post!
I first experienced sea urchin in the mid 90s on a dive boat off Catalina island. A dive master/instructor brought some on board and I tried it raw like you did. I was told it was roe. Years later I find out it's gonad! Love your West coast videos!
Fan in Los Angeles.
Nice little greenling. Love catching em. Thanks for the vid!
Simply beautiful man, love the shots excellent photographer !
Dude I just found this channel. Dope content bro! Wish I could've found it earlier.
I like watching you catch and cook all kinds of seafoods on rocky shores like rock fish, eels, crabs, clams, mussels, etc. Even urchins, squids and octopus could be found trapped on little pockets of watery holes and in puddles between rocks during low tides.
I'm super glad that I saw you on Outdoor Chef Life. I love your videos.
Yum! Greenling is delicious! Very underrated
How am I just now watching this video? lol awesome video, that greenling looks tasty!
I'm glad you returned the one crab back to the ocean. I enjoyed watching you prepare and enjoy the food.
First of your videos that I have seen. Just subscribed to follow you to see what else you put up. Great episode thank you.
I really Iike that he put back what he couldn't eat. Great episode
Wow awesome brings me back to my childhood, wishing to do those things again
Great vid man. Gearing up to bottom fish & crab Westport off our kayaks. Thanks for sharing your adventures with us. Liked & subscribed!
You’re a wild man for throwing that crab snare in the rocks like that lol
Look up “Dump pouch”. They are basically medium sided wide-mouth pouches that attach to your belt. It’s a military gear to drop empty magazines but I think you could use one when foraging. An added bonus is the pouch folds into a tiny square on the belt making it ideal while fishing and rock climbing. Btw, I dig the vid!
Got my mouth watering!
I love this guy and how he gives you the real deal on the taste. I would trust him if it came down to eating raw stuff.
Awesome video and display of abundance of our pacific northwest.
This makes me wanna go to a lake so badly during Quarantine
Little roll of French bread and butter and that a meal, looks so good
I really like when you talk about legal restrictions
Great video homie! Those kelp greenlings are really beautiful fish, would love to catch one one day!
Much love, all the way from Pittsburgh homie 👏🏿👏🏿 love the content
the head butter is the best part! when you go walking around Japan you find alot of places serve just that inside the shell grilled!
This man is amazing, props to you this is amazing content, you deserve way more 👏 👍
My boy D with that G shock game strong
Glad you are still alive... I only know that you are from watching your bro's vids:) Great vid man, thank you!
Fantastic coastline, seafood at your feet literally. Great video
Nice video, looked like a beautiful day. I think the reason why that uni was bitter is because it’s into their spawning season. I’ve noticed uni sometimes gets bitter then. Not 100% sure, just my experience. I’ve never seen you really enjoy uni, maybe leave it to the rest of us rabid fans lol. Also, the bigger red and black ones are having problems with population too. It’s really the little purple ones that are completely taking over and eating all the kelp, and able to survive without much food. I only harvest the small purple ones now- might as well be part of the solution, if I’m going to eat uni 🙂
Enjoy watching your video while eating my lunch here in Taiwan😊
Super video ,i still go fishing but nowadays cook indoors ,, i really enjoyed your catch and cook ,, mouthwatering Buddy ,,, Dan from Ireland ,,good fishin ,,,
I thought for a minute you had a picture of taku on your profile pic haha. Sweet catch and cook!
Just want to let u know how blessed I am to have a local sharing the knowledge 👳♂️
just commenting to say this is awesome.
Love waticng you eat. Makes me hungry🤤 wish i knew your videos existed before i was in northern California 2 years ago!!!!! I never got to fish🥺
Now thats some real butter!!
Hi I'm from New Zealand where sea urchins are a delicousy .
When you find a kina (our name for sea urchins) just shake out all the brown stuff the uni should cling on and stay in the shell then rinse with fresh water once twice or even three times if necessary that helps the flavour and eat with a small spoon your fingers are probably salty from the seawater.
Enjoy
Awesome video, as always!! Nice to see you back on here. 🍻🍻
What a good spot...its rare to have all those in one spot...I'm from nz and this spot would be a blessing...
Yo Daniel, with fisherman’s life out of commission it’s your time to shine. Keep up the videos
Lu Saeteurn why’s he out of commission?
Mark Kim , he had issues with his Achilles and was gonna have surgery.
Man been waiting for a video and finally something is out! Keep it coming man!🙌🏻🙌🏻
So many urchin I love urchin. I could single handed save the abalone by eating the urchin lol
Let's do it
I love boiling my seafood with a slice or 2 gingers, it brings out the sweetness
That opening shot 😍😍😍
Great tip on trying to pull from a different angle when snagged!
Great Vid Brotha! So glad you did a rockfish sesh, just like old time. Keep doing you PD...
Great video. Catch, clean, cook and EAT. Great .Where the heck are you??? Those abalone look really tasty. Ate a bunch when I was a kid in Dana Point California. There is nothing better then an abalone.
Ayy man much respect bro..you sure know how to live life
Hey dude, just moved to Cali from Australia! I love fishing and have been watching your videos for ages. Whereabouts in Cali do you suggest I explore for foraging, fishing and the likes? Thanks!
Pacifica, Monterey Bay, Half Moon Bay is all a good start
Where in Cali did you move to?
I’m in Long Beach, any suggestions in SoCal?
@@joker5266 You can do some lobstering in long beach aka crayfish to you down under.
great share. Not sure I am strong enough to throw a huge crab back. Good on ya

great video. great catch and cook video!
Great video! One of my favorites.
Nice food and healthy, clean water, good place to be , wish to be there .
Hi 👋 great video. Great lunch 🍴
If I was forced to "self-quarantine" I'd only be sad if couldn't do it in the form of being out in the wilderness with my fishing gear
I live in Newport Oregon and fish and forage for food all the time. It’s great to be able to do this and cook and not rely on grocery stores or restaurants to feed me and my family.
I like uni, but I find it is a flavor blender. Uni before something will taste vastly different than uni after something. If I enjoy uni it is on its own or in my first course.
The crab snare is pretty cool
I agree! Love cooking on the beach!xx
great video - making me really hungry! I want to try that method of snaring crabs
dude the butter... is gold
nice greenling super nice job waited him out.
23:20 “there’s a big sea urchin” are you talking about that huge star fish looking thing on the right side OMGG that thing IS huge 🤩🤩🤩

Cool video! Good content, very interesting. Thanks for sharing your adventure with us. Subbed.
I've read that Greenling often have internal parasites. How to clear from flesh before cooking? Freeze?
@Eren Kandogan Many thanks for taking the time to reply. Good Fishing!
Sick video as always philo d. Cheers bro!
dope catch and cook! and clean shots as always bro!
OMG your killing me foraging and eating some tasty food. You cant find that here on the east coast where I live. Lucky!
Where in the country is this? Looks fun!
Would love to collect some of those discarded abalone shells for inlay work.
Inside the Casino You can find lots between Monterey and Carmel California.
Great vid, seafood looks delicious. Hi all the way from Little New Zealand. Over here we call 'uni' Kina, its a delicacy here. To see it in abundance where you are is awesome. 🤙🏾
Just full of life!! Unbelievable and beautiful
