    I worked on urchin dive boats in the 90s, that urchin is LOADED. Absolute top quality, hasn't spawned and gotten milky yet. Cargo hold of that would get a special flight from the processor and be in Japan in 14 hours bringing in top dollar. Amazing catch there, no way to know until you open them up. You scored big time, no one in the world ate better uni that day.

    When harvesting uni the flavor comes from the type of seaweed that its been eating. If you dont like uni and want to try a way of preping it next time. Open it scoop out the gonads and soak it in purified water that is salty like the ocean. Peel any loose membrane of the pieces and try it with a little drop of sushi vinegar. Try it this way next time.

    Did that kind of fishing for 40 plus years, now's when you'll find big cabezons under the rocks, they should be finishing up spawning about now. Lings also will be under the big ledges and holes. Once you catch a big female in a nice spot, check it every season, you might be surprised. I used straight 50lb mono all the time, Ultra Green maxima, I rarely lose the big ones. Good Luck, enjoy, be careful, and be thankful for being blessed.

      @@vincegolder4560 Nice gesture, sporty. Being that I have a big asian american family, that loves seafood, they come first. It's Fish and Game job to set regulations that work. Plus I pay hundreds of dollars for the right to catch my food.

      @vincegolder4560 4 года назад +6

      Sorry for having respect for nature. Its fish and games job to set statewide regulations, but its up to the individual to make sure spots don't become overfished and to practice good morals. Just because it's legal, doesn't mean its right, after all, its legal to keep 7 inch rockfish, but most if not all fishermen know that's wrong. Paying for a fishing license doesn't make you special, all fishermen do. It also doesn't excuse poor morals. You really aren't setting a good precedent, considering how defensive you got about me suggesting releasing spawning fish. People like you are the reason spots become overfished and dry.

    • @MC-pz3ps
      @MC-pz3ps 4 года назад +3

      @@vincegolder4560 Who keeps 7 inch rockfish? Every female fish is a potential spawning fish. If you marvel at all the species of fish and release them, then you must believe in God's way, Great! Take a long range trip out of San Diego, Morro Bay, or Oxnard and marvel at the eat or be eaten mindset of all the fish, if a fish slows down, it get eaten by a bigger fish, and he in turns gets eaten by an even bigger fish. It happens like crazy right in front of you, and It's been going on since the beginning of time. People have been eating fish since the beginning. Do you know how many MLP closed areas spots you can't fish? Research them if your worried about the fish. If you say your spots are overfished and dry, then you must either can't fish, or don't know where to. I 'm just standing up for my right to catch my food, and my spots are not overfished, I catch all the fish I want.

    Dude, you are making me cry. I miss Maui and wish I could transport myself to my favorite beach cove. I'd be snorkeling and gathering my lunch of opihi, spear a couple of fish and possibly a good size tako or octopus. Great video, man...really enjoyed it! My buddies and I use to night dive and harvest tako and lobster. Of course the sharks were around so we always paired up to watch each other' s six. One of us would remain in camp to keep the fire going and prepare the coals for placing any fish directly on the them. Man, so much fun to eat fresh fish right off the coals with hashish, drink adult beverages and talk story.

    When I was a kid, I was out foraging for rock crab and found this MONSTER male under this rock. Being stupid and overzealous, I immediately go to grab it and fling it in my bucket, but instead it grabbed the end of my thumb and just absolutely crushed it, not letting go. So I go to grab the claw with the other hand and it grabs my other thumb!!!
    So now you can imagine this 12 year old kid flailing around this crab and screaming, while my uncle (RIP) was just watching and laughing.
    I got the last laugh, however. I ate that crab.

    Look up “Dump pouch”. They are basically medium sided wide-mouth pouches that attach to your belt. It’s a military gear to drop empty magazines but I think you could use one when foraging. An added bonus is the pouch folds into a tiny square on the belt making it ideal while fishing and rock climbing. Btw, I dig the vid!

    Nice video, looked like a beautiful day. I think the reason why that uni was bitter is because it’s into their spawning season. I’ve noticed uni sometimes gets bitter then. Not 100% sure, just my experience. I’ve never seen you really enjoy uni, maybe leave it to the rest of us rabid fans lol. Also, the bigger red and black ones are having problems with population too. It’s really the little purple ones that are completely taking over and eating all the kelp, and able to survive without much food. I only harvest the small purple ones now- might as well be part of the solution, if I’m going to eat uni 🙂

    When you find a kina (our name for sea urchins) just shake out all the brown stuff the uni should cling on and stay in the shell then rinse with fresh water once twice or even three times if necessary that helps the flavour and eat with a small spoon your fingers are probably salty from the seawater.
