Top advice about the suspension. 25 years ago I bought my first brand new bike, a Ducati 900 SS. Brilliant machine. The suspension was top notch, and adjustable for preload, compression, and rebound. After running it in, I took it to a proper windy road round some coastal cliffs and slackened everything off to the mid-point of adjustment. (Already an improvement in itself). I took a notebook and a pencil and started making adjustments, one notch at a time, first to the front end, then the back end, and noting on a chart whether the effect was positive or negative. It took me all afternoon but once I'd finished, the bike was transformed. I tried fiddling with it over the years I owned it, but basically, for solo riding, the setup was perfect.

There’s a method called bracketing for setting up suspension, I use it for the mountain bike you ride the same bit of trail and make small changed and see if it’s better or worse till you get the feeling you like
Another great blog Simon. I noticed you use a camelback hydration system. what’s it like to use/carry thinking of using mine on the adventure bike when doing longer rides. Ride safe mate.

Great video, and a new sub.just done a few training days and joined Glass, but so confused about what bike to get.Looked at crf and 701's but would love to get a gasgas 350 but seriously worried about spending more time on the spanners than riding. decisions decisions.😊
Hey up Dan, thanks for watching, bikes is a big desicion, the CRF is a good starter get one that's a few years old so you don't mind dropping it, or just get the gas gas, 4 stroke, same as the KTM and as I said nearly 600 hours on my 350 excf it's only oil change at 30h and it's just matinance that's normal, hope you get one soon, ride safe, Simon B 👍
Enjoyed watching this as I,m curious about it. What do think of these 125,s like Sinnis and MGB with linked brakes ? Ive seen review videos with a bit of green laning and also carrying side panniers and top boxes while learning.😀
Hey up Peter, buying a green lane bike is not easy, it depends where your lanes are and what sort, you can't go wrong with a honda 300l will do everything rather well, it's a start 🤔
Hey up Scotty, it will be a fair beast, take some taming, but what could can do a lot can do a little 😁, for a beginner with no experience it probably would be, really find a cheap 250 four stroke, you might not like off road 😲, hope you find something, ride safe Simon B 😎
Not necessarily gonna advise anyone else do this. But for green laning you don't even need an off roading bike. I rode my grom for 3 years down green lanes with just a knobly rear tyre before I eventually upgraded the stock suspension 😂
Hey up dorench, you are right, you can ride these lanes on anything, as long as it's legal 😉, be fun on done lanes 😁, just a bit hard work, thanks for dropping a comment, ride safe Simon B 😎
The most difficult part is actually finding a trail that hasn;t been downgraded. Local Authorities find it an amusing torture for bikers to put a TRO halfway up a great trail to ruin it for you and "walkers" just love to report you for riding on bridlepaths. I gave up and went electric MTB, no number plates, no driving licence and no problem.
Hey up John, it's not that difficult to find new lanes, I have a video coming soon to show this very subject 👍, I also bought an emtb, hope your not riding on footpaths 🤔, that has it's similar issues, as your only legal on bridleways, thanks for watching and dropping a comment, much appreciated, ride safe, Simon B 😎
@@johnmarsh2078if you ride a bicycle on a road you can still get points on your drivers license and you still have to obey traffic laws. I can’t see or understand how that’s a workaround ?
@@victorvale5534 No you cannot get points on your driving licence. The laws relating to motor vehicles do not apply to pedal cycles. All the road traffic laws begin "if or when a person drives a motor vehicle on a road". As you do not require a driving licence to ride a bicycle you cannot have your licence endorsed for riding a bicycle "furiously". Or on a footpath. In addition thepolice have no power to impound your bicycle. If a lawyer advised you that bicycle riding can result in endorsements on your licence to drive motor vehicles ........ if the advice were free that's what it was worth. if he charged .... don't pay or sue him its worthless and wrong!
Hey up rodsreel, I ran mooses on that 350, I'm now running mooses on my 500, they are great, I opt for the harder ones dura do I one that runs about 14 psi which is great for the road also , hope that helps, ride safe Simon B 😎
My mate does this. He's spent thousands and thousands just on engine maintenance. So, my question is, given the average speeds down the lanes, why bother with race tune engines?
Hey up bigduke, thousands 😲, it's not that dear to run a KTM, change the oil and keep it's air filter clean, it will last, my old 350 had nearly 600 hours on it 😲, still going strong, maybe he needs to learn how to maintain himself, there's no other bike out there that is as good 😁, that's why we ride them 👍 what do you ride ?
@BigDuke6ixx the 350 only had two pistons replaced, your mate must have a 2 stroke ?, there's not a need to do the rebuilds if your only doing green lanes 😎, ride safe Simon B 😎
KTM 500 EXC owners are telling me they change the oil every 500 miles for regular dual sport riding, not racing. My Honda CRF300L manuals calls for oil changes every 8000 miles or annually. Valves clearance is every 16,000 miles. Ride whatever you like, but these bikes are on different planets. You pay a hefty cost for the extra KTM performance.
Hi Simon. Im 50 and just started my interest in green laneing. Did a day in wales and loved it. Any advice ib where to look for a bike ? Thank you for your advise. I’ve subbed 👍

@@J-Mc72. a nice excf 250 or a 350 would be good, the Honda's are ok but 35kg heavier 😲, something cheap to start with as you'll be lying it down a lot, so a 10k bike will hinder your progress as you'll be frightened to drop it 🤭, but your not pushing hard enough if you aren't falling off it 😉, hope you get sorted, ride safe, Simon B 👍
Great vid, i wonder if you could answer a question on Tyre choice. I see alot of riders running what looks like 100% off road tyre patterns. How should people approach this as some Green lanes and rides like the TET trails have a fair few miles of road work. What is the chance of getting pulled over by the police whilst on a road section and getting a fine for non road legal tyres.
Hey up mark, there is no problem with tyres in the road as long as you don't buy super sticky enduro tyres, a go to tyres is the Michelin trackers, they are road legal and are great off road and road legal, so there's no issues, hope that helps , thanks for watching and dropping a comment, ride safe Simon B 😎

17:01 Another question Simon please. My DRZ SM is Irish registered and taxed. There is no MOT for bikes here yet. It is insured. So is it ok without a UK MOT to use on a green lane. (Bike is in tip top shape). Thank you. Jimmy.
Now that's a question I don't know, if you can ride that bike on the road over here, you can ride it on a green lane as it's the same as a road but it's not tarmac'd so all good, 😎
That's still a lot of servicing. My DR650 had done 135,000km and the engine has never been opened. What's the point of extra power of you never use it. Just get a donkey.
Hey up bush pig, compared to you Dr yes, but the excf is what, 50kg lighter more nimble and easier to pick up 🤔, it's a funny old world, if we all liked the same it would be rather boring, stick with what u like, but try something different, you may like it, thanks for watching and dropping a comment, much appreciated, ride safe, Simon B 👍

I haven't done much since covid, but got into green laning many years ago. The biggest problem...by far...is the secretive nature of it. I could never understand it, nobody wanted to share information. Even the app for GLASS and TRF was woefully inadequate, out of date, inaccurate, and sometimes incorrect. I just wasn't prepared to risk my clean licence by trusting Trailwise. I ended up doing my own research and checking. A lot of lanes in Yorkshire where I live were getting TRO'd and restricted or downgraded. The nature of green laners at the time seemed to be "close ranks" and keep quiet. It didn't work. While the ethos appeared to be "green lanes are for everyone" there was an unmentioned supplement of - "but don't tell them".. I hope its better now. People should share and compare information without having to fork out for it. As for equipment....anything that's safe. I've seen a Fiat Panda green laning. And one of my best days ever was a laning day in North Yorkshire about 40 years ago on my girlfriends Yamaha DT80...! At present I've a Defender 90 300tdi and a Suzuki DRZ400 , but sadly not the health at the moment to get out there. Great vid - keep 'em coming

There’s a method called bracketing for setting up suspension, I use it for the mountain bike you ride the same bit of trail and make small changed and see if it’s better or worse till you get the feeling you like
That's the one, you'll be an expert when yours arrived 😁, makes it easier to ride 👍
That's a good idea 👍
Another great blog Simon. I noticed you use a camelback hydration system. what’s it like to use/carry thinking of using mine on the adventure bike when doing longer rides. Ride safe mate.
Hey up Steve, thanks for watching, the PAC is a kriega trail 9, really well made and comfortable, it's hard keeping hydrated on a motorcycle, but something like this would help, ride safe, Simon B 👍
great info I'm doing my bike licence at the moment to do just this never new there was an association TRF i will defiantly join,
Hey up Simon, good luck getting your licence, have a great time on them lanes, ride safe Simon B 😎
Thanks for the advice you covered plenty for a total novice getting into enduro. Spot on pal, thanks 👍
Hey up Azzbo thanks for watching and dropping a comment, what u riding and where you ride ?
Hi Simon thanks for your advice, I'm new to green laning, I've got myself a 2010klx 250, I'm based in Lancashire South of Preston so I really appreciate all the advice you gave, I'm getting all my kit bought then I'm ready to find the green lanes, thanks mate cheers and you got another subscriber.. Oh just a, quick one could you recommend someone to set up my suspension for my weight, no probs if you can't thanks mate. 👌👍👍👍
Hey up John, thanks for the kind words, glad you are enjoying the videos and the lanes, there is ace suspension near you I believe are really good, being the age the forks and shock may need a bit of tlc also, hope you get sorted, ride safe Simon B 😎
@@SIMONB1 Cheers Simon thanks mate, I think the suspension guy is based in Broughton so I'll look into it, thanks mate. 👌👍👍👍
Smashing!
Hey up Tom, glad you enjoyed it, have you just started or thinking of it ?
Hi Simon, great vid as usual. I’ve just started putting a few vids up myself (no chat though) so nothing like yours. I’m a local lad too. Where is Bolder Alley in Grizedale, that looks awesome. Does that link to Coniston ? I have Glass maps 👍🏻
Hey up Andy ,it's just at the visitor centre, it links up to Esthwaite, thanks for watching and dropping a comment much appreciated, ride safe, Simon B 👍
Bet those would be fun on my electric mountain bike too.
Watched till the end, very good advice,
I have friend who used to go green laning ,ight havr to have a word with him.
Hey up flying fun, I also ride some of these lanes on the EMTB, they are fun, thanks for watching, ride safe Simon B 😎
Thanks for that Simon very informative I’m new to green lanes and I pick my KTM 250 TPI six days on on the fist of March and can’t wait to hit the lanes
Hey up Richard, thanks for watching, glad to be of help, be like Christmas soon again 🤭, as I say get out there and practice 😉, ride safe, Simon B 👍
@@SIMONB1 Cheers Simon I’ll be starting with things like the Old coach road fist then build up but with mountain biking since the late 90,s I,m hoping to pick it up fairly quickly
Very informative, well made video. Thanks for the content.
Hey up, thanks for watching and dropping a comment, do you ride or thinking of starting off road ?
Such a great video thanks a lot for making it ❤️
Hey up, no worries, have you just started green laning ?
Hello Simon thanks for all the great content. Would you say a ktm exc 300 is to much for a beginner starting out green laning?
Hey up Scotty, it will be a fair beast, take some taming, but what could can do a lot can do a little 😁, for a beginner with no experience it probably would be, really find a cheap 250 four stroke, you might not like off road 😲, hope you find something, ride safe Simon B 😎
Fantastic video keep em coming….
Hey up Jon, thanks for the positive feedback, thanks for watching and dropping a comment, much appreciated, do you ride off road ?
My kawasak klx450r is perfect for the lanes
Hey up tooth fairy, you must have been riding a while to handle a 450 😉😲
Not necessarily gonna advise anyone else do this.
Great vid 👍🏽 . Any advice on good 125cc bikes to start greenlaning for the first time ?
Hey up greeni, KTM do a 125 pick them up good prices, any think with a long travel suspension will do, hope you get sorted, ride safe, Simon B 😎
No numberplates, not subject to Road Traffic Act, go where you want ........ carefully.
Opinion on using mooses in the tyres? when riding alone seems a good idea not to be stuck in the middle of nowhere with a ripped tyre?
@@SIMONB1 he seems to have it rebuilt quite often. How often would you rebuild your?
@BigDuke6ixx the 350 only had two pistons replaced, your mate must have a 2 stroke ?, there's not a need to do the rebuilds if your only doing green lanes 😎, ride safe Simon B 😎
Subscribed I enjoyed this video thanks Dude! 😎
Hey up superscaley, thanks for the sub, thanks for watching and taking the time to drop a comment, much appreciated, ride safe Simon B 👍
Hey up blue boy2, thanks for the sub 😁, depending where you are in the UK, eBay is your friend , or if you join the TRF group in your area, I'm sure they would have a Facebook page you can ask on there, be closer to you and the bike probably hasn't been abused, where in the UK are you ?
@@SIMONB1 Hi Simon. I’m in Cambridge.
Any recommendations on a first dirt bike Ie makes, cc etc
I did enjoy the KTM 400 in wales but I hear parts are starting to become difficult to sauce.
@@J-Mc72. a nice excf 250 or a 350 would be good, the Honda's are ok but 35kg heavier 😲, something cheap to start with as you'll be lying it down a lot, so a 10k bike will hinder your progress as you'll be frightened to drop it 🤭, but your not pushing hard enough if you aren't falling off it 😉, hope you get sorted, ride safe, Simon B 👍
@@SIMONB1 thank you for advice. At least I’m on the right track now. So much confusion because you want a descent bike but not overboard. 👍
I'm thinking about a voge 300 rally as my first trail bike... missing my kle 500, ok For short easy trails.
Now time for big boy pants riding 😁
Is ther groups that go out regularly? I'm the only one out my friends with a full licence an really wanna get into it😢
Hey up, you need to find out your local TRF group and see when they go out, most groups have regular rides, where in the country are you ?
Jameater? (PS 'Jameater' =Workington... 😊)
@@mahoganybomber how dare you , I'm not jameater 😲, what makes you think that 🤷
@SIMONB1 Haha! Where are you from? I'm born and raised Whitehaven. 😀
@mahoganybomber south Cumbria, gurt ossick , near ulverston, that's great urswick 😎
@@SIMONB1, ah cool. 👍 That's near where Saffy's from isn't it? I've not explored that area a lot over the years, I need to get to the Stan Laurel museum. I used to paraglide off Black Combe, but gave that up a few years ago. Lovely area down there. And you're right, you're not a jameater!! 😂
New sub
What area are you riding looks like I have done it before
Hey up Jordan, thanks for the sub, we are riding in the south lake District, where are you from ?
Hi, I payed for the premium OS maps. I planned a route on it but it didn't follow me. I had to keep moving the map on my phone screen. Is there more than one OS app to download to do that? Thanks
Hey up Alan, I'm guessing you have the new version of the app, as it's been updated, you need to press the pointer button twice to follow, message me on socials so I can send you a photo 😎
17:01 Another question Simon please. My DRZ SM is Irish registered and taxed. There is no MOT for bikes here yet. It is insured. So is it ok without a UK MOT to use on a green lane. (Bike is in tip top shape). Thank you. Jimmy.
Now that's a question I don't know, if you can ride that bike on the road over here, you can ride it on a green lane as it's the same as a road but it's not tarmac'd so all good, 😎
Where is please?
Hey up Paul, it's the lake District, Cumbria 😁, check out www.epicmotorcycletours.co.uk they do guided green lane tours in the area
Will do!!! Your videos are absolutely awesome!!!!
I agree with everything else you said. I pootle about on gravel roads in Australia, I only go out there to see the wildlife, take some pictures and enjoy the nature. I've no interest in upsetting the landowners and farmers.
You don't have to be a hooligan to own a KTM 😂, have you seen the other bike I have the KTM 690 enduro, that's a lot more adult like 😎, where in Australia are you ?
@@SIMONB1 @SIMONB1 Haha, we have a lot of wannabe holligans here. I've nearly bought a KTM myself in the past, I have nothing against them. I'm near Brisbane but used to live in the UK. It's nice to see the beautiful countryside. Subbed.
Where was you in this video pal?

@@SIMONB1 yeah im trying to save up for a chinese 125
Hey up budget nuclear, I think it's a bit secertive due to people just buying things and wanting to go off road 🤔, I get a bit protective as all the hours research I have put in to find and plan the routes 😲, the TRF group is very welcomeing now, do ride outs etc, thanks for watching, if you ever wanting a ride round the lakes get in touch, gladly take you around, ride safe, Simon B 👍
