  • Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra conducted by / Orquesta Sinfónica de Bournemouth dirigida por Marc Andreae.
    I. Allegro Moderato (0:00)
    II. Lento (6:44)
    III. Allegro Molto (17:22)
    IV. Allegro (21:08)
Volkmar Andreae was much like his contemporary Wilhelm Furtwängler, a conductor who also composed music. Born in the “neutral” Switzerland, he was however much attracted by Germanic musical forms, mostly for his own ethnic origins, being with Furtwängler one of the second-generation champions of Anton Bruckner’s music. Much like his contemporary and co-national Émile Jacques-Dalcroze, the prestigious educator ( • Video ), Andreae felt emotionally compelled to write music about WWI; his Symphony in C major became thus the vector to express his sentiments about the conflict. Written for an Elgar-sized orchestra and only lasting about half an hour, it is imbued with the spirit of Richard Strauss’ works with Andreae’s own philosophy; its sound world also approaches Myaskovsky’s Sixth (1921) and Vaughan Williams’ Pastoral Symphony (1921), equally wartime works.

barely aware of this composer until now. Terrific music...and surprisingly upbeat, considering the year of completion

+Haxo Angmark Well, after all Andreae was Swiss, a neutral country during WWI (and WWII) so, for much they could be told about the horrors of war, the Swiss never experienced such anguish both individually and socially. That is why this piece is rather filled with optimism for the future.

After hearing this Symphony I wish he had written NINE! What an interesting and well composed work. I can hear some Bruckner influence: not surprising as Andreae was also a conductor who recorded a complete Bruckner cycle in the early 1950's. Pre-stereo and largely forgotten. I am heading over to check out his chamber works now! Thanks for posting this...a real discovery!

+digitalmaestrorich Andreae composed another, yet earlier, symphony in B flat major for a rather Bruckner-sized orchestra (without the untuned perc) and I'm still on the hunt for that one. I'd like to add that I found this piece thanks to the mods of a strategy videogame I play (Civ 5 for the gamers out there), and I went amazed the moment I listened to the movement the modder put as the "war theme" for Switzerland...

+Past_notes Maybe it's worthwhile getting in touch with Marc Andreae since he seems quite committed to saving his grandfather's music from oblivion.
