My (Very Honest) Review of CELEBRITY SUMMIT - Is This Ship Too Old?!

  • In my very honest review of Celebrity Summit, I tell you all about the third oldest cruise ship in the Celebrity Cruises fleet. Celebrity Summit was sailing from Miami, Florida on a 4-day cruise to Cozumel, Mexico. In this Celebrity Summit review, I will tell you all about the cruise ship, food, entertainment, ports, and service. I was able to dine at a couple of specialty dining venues onboard Celebrity Summit, including Tuscan Grille and Sushi on 5. I give my food review of these and the main dining room, Oceanview Cafe, and more.

    It's a shame that there were issues with service and food. I sailed RCL in 2019 and the service was spectacular. Biggest reason for me booking a cruise with Celebrity. I think some of the cruise line changes are also affecting the staff negatively. I hope the cruise CEOs take notice.

      it was pretty clear that the crew were not happy with the changes when we were on the Connie in Jan 23, they couldn't do anything about it but you could tell that the smiles were a little forced at times.

    Thanks Zack for a very balanced review… We departed from the celebrity silhouette on April 6… We did have a wonderful time… We noticed that the dining rooms food quality is still good, but not as good as it was prior to Covid… The lobster tail was very very very small, and we never were offered fillet at all during the whole 10 night cruise… We did enjoy escargot every night and that made everything all better… It was a wonderful cruise, but we did notice some differences, but service was excellent... we had a similar experience at Tuscan on the infinity back in November… We have always enjoyed Tuscan, and I have always made a reservation for that specialty restaurant… However, in November it just like you said wasn't for us… We did not have a good experience… We thought about making a reservation on the silhouette, but chose not to… A little sad, but that's what we chose to do…

    Thank you for the review. There is a great price for cruising next month and since we have never been on Summit before we watched your video before booking the cruise. We love to watch your channel because you review the areas that we have questions about and you are not afraid to talk about prices. So many reviews just skim over the part if something is included or costs extra and what is that fee.

    The Millenium Class has the MOST ADVANCED PROPULSION on ANY CRUISE SHIP AFLOAT.
    2 GE LM2500 Gas turbines, plus one Recuperative Steam Turbine running on their waste heat.
    These make electricity which drive two electric propulsion pods as well as the the ship's utilities.
    The COGAS-E (COmbined Gas And Steam -- Electric drive) arrangement offers diesel like efficiency with gas turbine simplicity and power density.

We will be sailing Summit for the first time this June to Bermuda from Cape Liberty in New Jersey and your review was very encouraging. Love the contemporary makeover of Summit and very impressed with the Oceanview cafe and main dining. We are already fans of Celebrity as we’ve sailed Reflection twice and hope to experience many other of its newer and even older revolutionized ships. Thanks for your honesty and enjoyed your rating system.

    I was really surprised how modern Celebrity Silhouette felt when I cruised on her last Summer. I haven't tried to newer Celebrity ships, but I absolutely loved the feel of Silhouette - it felt SO MUCH NEWER than it actually was! It sounds like there's some similarities in this respect between my experience on Silhouette and yours on Summit!

      Celebrity's style is "retro-modern" up to the Edge ships. So, even on the earlier Century class ships there were many modern touches. The Solstice class is an evolution from Century and Millennium class ships whereas the Edge is mostly a departure. Silhoutte is a Solstice ship and Summit is a Millennium class ship so some huge changes were made to the Solstice ships from the Millennium ships but the style remain constant.

Except for the weather which was very windy and cold, we had a great time on the Summit. The food in the Oceanview buffet was very good. Dinner at The Cosmopolitan was amazing! I meant to say, completely agree with you about Tuscan Grill. When we ate there on the Equinox it was very hit or miss. I see you caught the ceremonial chopping of the basil on camera! Except on Equinox the basil wasn't in the best shape and they didn't have the fancy scissors you show just regular ones and the basil kept sticking to the blades. It was kind of ridiculous as the server painstakingly went round all 6 of us.

Everything was so fantastic, we booked our next cruise while on board (just happened to be in 2022 a few months after the restart). It's too bad about the rude staff. It's funny how much cruising has changed over the last twenty some odd years. I sailed the Summitt and the other M-class ships when they were brand new. And, they were absolutely gorgeous, cutting-edge ships at the time. They were also considered to be very large cruise ships. Now, they are the old tried and true, "small" ships to sail on. When I started sailing the Century and Mercury were the old, small ships.

    • @benjaminsmith2287
      @benjaminsmith2287 6 месяцев назад

      I sailed on the Century and Galaxy when they were "megaships." They were fantastic and I liked that they weren't carbon copies of each other. Like everything else, bigger is becoming more standard sized. I'm a fan of the Century/Galaxy, not so much of the Millennium ships (pre renovation, they may be fine now), and I like the Solstice ships and don't like the Edge ships.

    • @benjaminsmith2287
      @benjaminsmith2287 6 месяцев назад

      Exactly. And one specialty dining room was enough. It was the occasion to go to when it was splurging. To me, Celebrity has not made a class of ship as good as the Century class. The Century and Galaxy and Mercury are three individual ships. You don't go on the Century and the Galaxy and one is just different colors of the same areas. They were quite different inside and the Mercury was really different. Same layout, different furnishing and decor completely. That's not done anymore. But there were far more lounges to enjoy, the art was cutting edge at the time, the tech, the dining rooms with the aft views were magnificent, the theaters were modern and such. Those claiming the Edge ships are so great should IMO keep in mind that they too will age. And in time, will they stand the test of time like the Century, Milllennium ships have? Or will they need a whole lot of changes done to them? We'll see. But one day they won't be the latest, most modern. I seriously think much of the hype about them is that they are new vs. really any nicer than the Solstice class. I find the Solstice class richer and more clever in space utilization.

    Hey Zach, we just got back from our back-to-back on Summit (Aqualclass). We did agree with your review of Sushi on 5 (Great!) and Tuscan Grill. (meh) Blu and Chef's Table were excellent (the paired wine cost for Chef's Table on top of our Premium drink seemed a bit steep) and we were pleasantly surprised with OceanView and Spa Cafe. Too bad that you had (specific) negative service interactions. We also had one service "weird" situation, but I'll chalk that up to an inexperienced worker, otherwise we found service up to standard - outstanding cabin steward, Blu staff and one particularly helpful Cellar Master host!. Too bad Cellar Masters isn't available on many other ships since we really liked it

    Been on The Summit several times. The Constellation also several times. My wife and I wanted to try the Zenith to Bermuda, but, never got a shot on it. It really is a nice ship. Haven't been on it since it got redone. Love the Millennium class ships. The food was pretty good on the ship. When on vacation I don't like to use the internet. The Buffett on the Millennium class ships are really nice. The service on Celebrity Cruise Line usually is good. My wife enjoyed lobster night too. Tuscan grill did not impress my wife. She thought it wasn't good. Celebrity started charging more for Specialty Restaurants. These days it's not worth it. Don't like to eat raw fish. Did hit the like button. Food from room service could be good, unless it gets delayed. I like the salmon no matter what cruise line I go on. My wife thought the comedian on the Constellation was the best. Never had problems with service on a Millennium class ship. When we were on another class ship we had problems.

      This was our first Celebrity cruise. We are usually HAL cruisers. The norovirus protocols made for extra work for the crew and they resented it. The service especially in the dining room was bad. We had only one meal in the dining room on a 10 day cruise that didn't have an issue. Certainly not what I expected from a line with Celebrity's reputation. I really really really wanted to like Celebrity to have more choices, but I guess we'll stick with HAL.

    Hi Zach, great review! I will be on the Summit this December for a 5 night Key West and Bahamas cruise. Question, I also have a inside cabin booked and was wondering how you upgraded to the balcony cabin? Was it offered online, did you ask at the port, or on the ship? Thank you!

  • @chrisstanley5647
    @chrisstanley5647 2 месяца назад

    I just got back yesterday from a cruise on Summit and while at sea the power went out twice (in the same day), the water went out twice (once flooding the floor that I was on), the ship was incapable of docking at Bimini because the engines are too weak for the wind (no storm, just regular wind), and the dining room experience was a *mess* because getting just a refill on water after the first pour was all but impossible. The balcony rooms are uncomfortably tight, the day at Key West was miserable trying to get on and off because they were cleaning the only set of elevators that went to 1st floor disembarkation area so only one elevator was working at a time.. for a full ship.. and they were visibly trying to paint over the rust spots all over the exterior of deck 10. Virgin Voyages definitely spoiled me, I will not be taking any Celebrity ship again - I could have paid the same price for a FAR superior time elsewhere.

    Zach - when you have done the ‘Move Up’ program with Celebrity and moved up to the Retreat - did you get treated any differently than if you had booked the Retreat initially? I know that I won’t get the extra points or OBC’s, but am curious if we really get the upgraded drinks package w/o purchasing it (we have the Classic package currently, as well as Standard Wi-Fi). Also- hoping that we aren’t treated differently when trying to use priority embarkation, disembarkation - etc…. All tips / help / suggestions, warmly welcomed as we board Silhouette next week (NOV 16, 2023) and I think I made a major mistake spending more on our ‘Move Up’ upgrade than we literally spent on the veranda ‘all inclusive’ cruise that we originally purchased. 😅

    • @benjaminsmith2287
      @benjaminsmith2287 6 месяцев назад

      A 22 year old ship should be at best considered middle aged and not old. The cruise industry is marketing new for the past 20 plus years but ships should last 50 plus years with some refurbishments from time to time. I don't think newer is always better. For instance, I don't like the Edge class ships and feel the Solstice ships are better. I also liked the Celebrity Century class ships better than the Millennium class ships. My reason all has to do with social lounges and the atmosphere/feel of them. For others, there are other priorities. If you're a foody, then maybe Edge class is best. But, the Summit is not an old ship as ships go. It's just there are so many newer ones, it's older. But older is always relative.

    Been cruising on Celebrity since the Horizon in the 1990’s. Sailed on Summit when new. Unfortunately, their newer ships are all the Edge class, which I consider mostly hype. The Solstice class is my favorite but those ships are also getting older. At least they still offer guests three classes of ships. Cruised on Holland America a few months ago and found it to be equal, if not better at lower costs. Celebrity is positioning itself as a premium line, but it has become too expensive for what you get.

    • @benjaminsmith2287
      @benjaminsmith2287 6 месяцев назад

      Horizon class to Solstice were evolutionary that built on each other. Those Edge ships took away too much. And this emphasis on suite passengers is a turn-off. Give the repeat cruisers the perks. I refuse to go into some larger room just for perks. I don't need it. HAL is more consistent but of course nickel and diming is part of a lot of cruising and especially post-pandemic.
      Celebrity needs to make a new class after the over-hyped, over-rated IMO Edge class that brings back the goodness of the Solstice class. Put some proper lounges in them and you don't need this open, multi-tired spaces for all the social areas. Maybe make some restaurants supper clubs so you can dine and then enjoy a band and dancing if you choose. Bring back some charm and romance to the ships. And go back to retro-modern designers, not the trendy everything is gray/beige and pale peaches look of the Edge ships.

      I prefer some of the non-revolutionized areas of the Infinity vs. what's on the Summit. Not all, but some. The original dining room is much more stylish and rich and luxurious than the new style as well as the casino area and especially Michael's Club which is unforunately now the Retreat for sutie passenger's lounge. I do not like classism on ships so I'm not a fan of retreat passengers taking lounges away from regular passengers. Michael's pub as a piano bar was its best usage.

    I have been reading reviews on this ship for a while and jumped over to RUclips to check it out....I can say that most people love it however those that don't have the same complaints...service/staff are lacking, food isn't as good as it might be particularly some people saying they thought some items came from main dinning / buffet (like you mentioned it seems the same for your Ceasar salad and crab cake) Your Filet looked awesome but horrible being all alone on the plate...couldn't they have put the potatoes and broccoli on the same place and made it higher-end and wasted less by keeping those plates clean? and finally several mentioned plumbing problems (drainage issues), which they spoke with unconcerned staff about and the issue(s) were never addressed.

    The food is different between their ships. I was on the Infinity 9/2022 and the food was really poor. I went on the Reflection 1/23 and it was very good. I was on the Millennium 4/23 and the food was good. I was on the Edge in Europe in May and the food was Fabulous. The food was far superior on the Edge. The French restaurant Normandie was the BEST ship food I have had in years, To date, I have sailed on 75 ships and 149 cruises. The pre Royal Caribbean owned Celebrity's food was always amazing on the Zenith & Horizon.

    • @benjaminsmith2287

      Zenith/Horizon compared to Edge. Celebrity has changed a lot. You mention food so maybe the Edge is a great ship for you. From videos, I find it lacking. I like ship lounges with dance floors and there were so many on the Zenith and Horizon. There are maybe 2 on the Edge? I liked the 90s/early 2000s Celebrity not because I feel older is better, but I felt that style of ship was more individual and interesting than what I see in the Edge class. The Horizon/Zenith was about Michel Roux where now Celebrity has Daniel Boulud. So, they have connections to some of the great French chefs.

    The problem is that the M Class ships are the only that can do certain itineraries and they are not building 2,000 passenger ships anymore. They give the best of both worlds - great itineraries and some of the nice features of being on a large ship. The also are not overcrowded. We haven't cruised "for the ship" and gimmicks in years. We are now gravitating to smaller more premium ships like Oceania and Azamara. I don't believe I will take a Caribbean cruise (other than Panama Canal) on an M class ship. Can't see taking a cruise on an Edge class ship. Would probably go Oceania or even Windstar for that experience.

    The current Summit is a very different ship than when it was new. I sailed the Constellation when it was new. It wasn't considered "small" by any means and it had one specialty restaurant that was an extraordinary experience. So, in other words, it didn't depend so much on specialty restaurants the way the Solstice and Edge class ships do. It has a thellasotherapy pool that is good, but not as great as the smaller ones on the Century class ships. It had some wasted space that has been utilized now in the Solsticizing of them. I like the Solsticizing and I don't love some of the "revolutionizing" of them beyond the staterooms and buffets. They should have never touched the way more luxurious and classy dining room IMO. And Michael's is now boring and a huge downgrade as the Retreat lounge. But, time moves on. It still has a lot of the features that made it desirable and it's a large ship for those of us that have been cruising for decades, and maybe "smaller" for those used to the much larger standard of size today. There are nice lounges on this ship but not as many as the Century ships and the new Martini Bar is very good as it is designed like the Solstice class ships.
    The ship itself has nothing to do with service or food or entertainment so how well these are executed has to do with whoever the staff/crew and entertainers are on a given sailing.

    Hi Zack, I do enjoy your videos, but can I ask are you are an expert on fine dining,, used to fine dining, or know the difference? So many of you comment on the dining, but what is your background for instance were you brought up in a family with a butler and fne dining? This is not getting at you, but there are so many people here online who are obviously normal people completely out of their safe zone commenting on various things, dressing in tuxedos and who look completely out of place and talking about things they should in fact keep quiet about. How many people were on this cruise? Sounds like not many so are the major cruise lines lying about the people or passengers they are getting on their cruise ships.

    You really get the best prices on the older Celebrity ships. Does it bother you to sit between two couples in the main dining room? As a solo cruiser I tell the maitre d that is a no go and to seat me against a wall in a cocoon style chair. I find it very awkward to sit between couples if I'm alone. I also had two instances of rude staff on the Summit also. Perhaps they were the same people you interacted with lol

      It can sometimes be uncomfortable but I usually “work” (edit pics and answer messages/comments) while waiting for food so I’m distracted anyway.

    When you don’t care for a dish during a specialty dining meal, do you ever ask for something else? Just wondering if that’s acceptable.

    We just completed 10 days cruise from Aruba with Celebrity Summit. The Main dining room is total disappointment, and they use low quality ingredients and cheap quality foods for their customers. It is just a Fancy restaurant with Cafeteria style dishes.
    It is a medium/small size cruise ship with great service and with mature well manner passengers.
    Oceanview Cafe are great, it has lot of great selections, fruit selections, Indian dishes and the Bakery, all are excellent. The Indian dishes actually are much better than American Dishes. Most of the American dishes are subpar. They look dark and very salty,
    As a minimum, MDR should use fresh ingredients for their soup base, not just Powder for the soup base for their connivence, in It is quite easy using real bean, green pea and diced potato for their soup base, they use grain powder for their watery soup base, they are unacceptable. they may need to hire a new Chef.
    Main dining room is total disappointment, they also use baby meatless mussels, baby shrimps and baby scallops for Shrimp scampi, they try save money using low budget ingredients, they turn the Main Dining Room into a fancy cafeteria with great service, it is quite easy using real bean, green pea and potato for their soup base, such as for clam chowder, green pea and pasta fagioli, they are not saving money at all.
    Coffee (flat taste) and the powder watery coffee Creamer, * one star, just lack of taste and lack of aroma, they taste so bad, need to be upgraded, Spa Cafe offers much better cafe than the Oceanview Cafe, get your coffee at Spa Cafe.
    Shrimp scampi dish is a joke, 1 star * they put four baby shrimps on top of the yellow sauce, they call them shrimp scampi, need to learn the real scampi receipt,
    Prime rib (thin cut) and sirloin steak (thin cut) *** three stars, they just served them as cafeteria style. They are disappointment.
    Watery Pasta fagioli soup * one star, it tasted is so bad, they should use fresh diced potatoes, fresh pasta, not potato starch for their soup base, need to get to use real diced fresh potato, need new receipt.
    Watery green pea soup, taste so bad, they use green pea powder for soup base, need to use real green peas for soup base. it is the worst green pea soup i ever tasted, Need new receipt.
    Shrimp cocktail ** two stars, they use Baby shrimps as shrimp cocktail
    Chicken breast * one star they overcooked
    chicken Lemon pepper chicken * one star dry and overcooked
    Seafood orzo * one star, they cook with baby meatless mussels, baby shrimps and baby scallops as ingredients, it may be good enough for a cafeteria, but not enough for a premium grade cruise ship. need to be improved and upgrade the ingredients.
    Sautéed salmon grill salmon * one start on top of pasta, * one star, need to learn the sautéed receipt, not just grill the salmon and put it on top of pasta, need to learn and understand Sauteed the Salmon, need to be improved.
    Grilled Salmon, it looks so dull and unattractive, i am not a chef, but I know how to cook, they need apply some butter/sugar for the final glazing.
    Mushroom tempura, they breaded the mushrooms with sauce. it is not crispy tempura style fry mushrooms. need new tempura receipt.
    Grill sirloin steak (less than 1/2" thick with gravy, are you kidding, they put gravy over a grilled sirloin steak, need to be improved.
    MDR should use fresh ingredients for their soup base, not just Powder for the soup base for their connivence, in It is quite easy using real bean, green pea and diced potato for their soup base, they use grain powder for their watery soup base, they are unacceptable.
    Just like a simple dish (grilled Salmon), it looks dull and unattractive, at a minimum they need to apply final butter/syrup dressing for final browning.
    Coffee (flat taste) and the powder watery coffee Creamer, just lack of taste and lack of aroma, they taste so bad, need to be upgraded, Spa Cafe offers much better cafe than the Oceanview Cafe, get your coffee at Spa Cafe.

    I was on the Edge last November for a 12 day Southern Caribbean and omg it was so disappointing. Lack of shows, lack of staff, two premium restaurants closed the entire cruise
