Eine hervorragende Zusammenstellung! Diese Stücke sind einfach mit das Nonplusultra an Musikkunst. Wenn ich bedenke, daß im Islam Musik im Grunde verboten ist, dann tun mir diese Menschen leid. Was da alles ihnen verloren geht. Dabei muß Musik eigentlich ein Grundbedürfnis des Menschen sein. Könnte er sonst singen und musizieren? Man braucht hier nur die Zeugnisse der ersten Instrumente berücksichtigen, wie alt die schon sind.
The 'problem', if you will, is that Beethoven holds a place in music equivalent to that of Shakespeare in dramatic literature and lyric poetry: there'll probably never be another. And neither were isolated savants but rather represented the acme of 'genius clusters', like say, Leonardo, Botticelli, and Raphael in 15th Century Florentine painting, and several dramatists and artists in 5th Century Athens, etc. For music, late 18th & 19th century Vienna is such a cluster, as was late16th and early 17the century London for drama and poetry. Genius begets and inspires genius. Not just the symphony but in the string quartet, solo piano music, and the concerto, Beethoven set standards that his successors, especially the immediate German ones, could asymptotically approach but never quite surpass. You neglected to call Brahms' 1st Beethoven's 10th.

I have never been a particular fan of Mahler, but I will admit I love the choral portion of his 2nd Symphony, "Resurrection".
Dvorak's New World Symphony is my favourite. One day I would love to see it live.

Wenn ich bedenke, daß im Islam Musik im Grunde verboten ist, dann tun mir diese Menschen leid. Was da alles ihnen verloren geht. Dabei muß Musik eigentlich ein Grundbedürfnis des Menschen sein. Könnte er sonst singen und musizieren? Man braucht hier nur die Zeugnisse der ersten Instrumente berücksichtigen, wie alt die schon sind.

I wasn’t aware that violin concertos were symphonies.
Sibelius' violin is the greatest concerto, ahead of Beethoven's 5th Piano Concerto...
The 'problem', if you will, is that Beethoven holds a place in music equivalent to that of Shakespeare in dramatic literature and lyric poetry: there'll probably never be another. And neither were isolated savants but rather represented the acme of 'genius clusters', like say, Leonardo, Botticelli, and Raphael in 15th Century Florentine painting, and several dramatists and artists in 5th Century Athens, etc. For music, late 18th & 19th century Vienna is such a cluster, as was late16th and early 17the century London for drama and poetry. Genius begets and inspires genius. Not just the symphony but in the string quartet, solo piano music, and the concerto, Beethoven set standards that his successors, especially the immediate German ones, could asymptotically approach but never quite surpass.
You neglected to call Brahms' 1st Beethoven's 10th.
