thank you ! I never saw this before. But I met Don and hung out with him at his home in Trinidad CA for about 4 hours in the summer of 1985 when I was 23. We talked and talked. He offered me a cigar and we smoked cigars together. He clipped it and lit it for me, and it was my very 1st cigar

Great genius. I saw him win a battle of the bands in Northridge California in early 1965. There was something about him, I knew he was going to be great..and he was.

Great docu! So great to hear Cooder, Drumbo, Zappa, Fowler, Feldman, JC Black talking about CB. I wish they could have gotten some other members of the Magic Band that played on Trout Mask like the 2 guitarists.
I'm so glad I saw CB at the Public Theater in NYC in 1980 w/ Blood Ulmer, who's also gone. What an unforgettable show.
There will never be another like him. Makes me so so sad. But we do have the music.

I just thought this all needed a more recent comment ....... so there it is ....... Oh, I have a Beefheart story or 2 too -- here is 1: I was leaving a show at The Bayou I think it was in DC way back in mid/late 70s ..... I shook his hand and said "you guys are all geniuses" to which he replied, "But I don't have a yacht."

Thank you, Beefheart, BBC, Mr. smash9grab. The BBC people did us (OK, me) a great service by making this footage, and you by posting it. Good to hear these grounded words from Beefheart and people who know him in the living sound and paint and in the flesh. CBH has found a way to keep it together even making art way out there on the edge. Thanks!

Truly wonderful stuff. Thanks a lot for posting it. Nice to hear Peely again too. He was the first to play Beefheart in the UK back in the 60s.... on pirate radio, then on the BBC.
I was lucky enough to see Beefheart live in 1980. Wish I'd seen him in 74 at the Brighton Dome like a lot of my mates but I didn't go... i was a bit young.
If youlike Beefheart then check out Drumbo's book - Through the Eyes of Magic'. 900+ pages... an incredible story.

To Notecrusher: James Blood Ulmer is not "gone". He is still alive, still making music, still playing concerts. His most recent albums were released in 2010 and his most recent album appearances as a sideman were in 2012. I am jealous that you were at that show. I was just a kid then. Doc At The Radar Station is among my 4 favorite Beefheart albums with Trout Mask, Decals, and Ice Cream For Crow and Are You Glad To Be In America is probably my favorite Ulmer album although I highly recommend In and Out which came out in 2010.

Great upload. I think that in years to come the Captain will be recognized more and more as a major artist, both in painting and certainly as far as Rock'n'Roll is concerned. He was also very funny, I love listening to Safe As Milk, Clear Spot, The Spotlight Kid, Trout Mask Replica, Lick My Decals Off Baby, etc.. endless hours of enjoyment, but I think it might be too much for most people, who just don't get it. Anyway, you've done a great job, thanks for posting this

I watched this complete documentary without getting up. I understand Captain Beefheart better now. I think he is amazing. His songs attract me, and at the same time, push me away. I think that is his essence.
I'm sure he took it hard when Frank Died. In Frank's book, he said Beefheart would open the back of his Dad's Helms Bakery Truck, pull out some trays, and have his sister climb in to steal change from his Dad's belt changer. To buy smokes. I laughed, I used to buy donuts from the Helms man

The thing that Matt Groening said about Trout Mask Replica growing on you... that's my experience too. It sounds like a bunch of noise at first... but you know, there are a lot of parallel rythms, sounds, harmonies.. after about 10 or 20 times listening to it.. it becomes a lot more obvious

well, seeing as i'm married with 2 children i think i might have completed my evoloutionary perogatives already, and i can assure you that primitive catatonic music was not required in the process.
the fact that you see this as "abstract noodling" when a good deal of it is highly structured suggests that this may be lost on you. fair enough.
you stick to what you know, i'll stick to what i know. and hopefully never the twain shall meet.

I bought Led Zepplin 2 instead.

add 100 gecs to that list - taking the conventions of pop music and everything shoved off to the wayside, combining them together in a haphazard yet ultimately controlled and structured way.
inb4 you listen to "money machine" and go "oh boy that's trash." we all thought that about Trout Mask at first - don't lie to yourself.
