Most the work I've done in central and western Montana has been in the thrust belt mostly atop or involving the Wyoming Craton (i.e., not quite far enough west to be into accreted terranes). Lots of cool work on this - a paper that comes to mind is Foster et al. (2012). They use Hf isotopes to potentially identify the western margin of the craton (doi.org/10.1016/j.lithos.2012.03.005).
The software I'm using here (Esri ArcPro) requires a license that must be purchased. It is also only Windows compatible but you can run parallels if you are a Mac user. The more common and accessible option is QGIS. Q is powerful and can accomplish most the things that is done in Arc. I prefer the latter bc I learned it in undergrad and have taught courses that utilize it. I'm sure there are others out there but those are the two that I use and am familiar with.

I think you have Suspect or exotic terrains regim in your study area. Good luck in your project.
