Mostly due to Windows updates changing, disabling, replacing old discontinued features, or adding new ones which in some cases cause problems with running the game on some hardware combinations.

After an update to Windows 10 in summer 2017, mouse cursors started to disappear in Dungeon Siege II all over the world.
- This workaround fixed it for me.
For those lazy copy/paste people who just happen to be using a 1920x1080 resolution (courtesy of HCM HIKevinIH):

There is not much I can do about it, as I am not involved in the development of this patch at all. However, I just tried downloading it, and whatever was broken 3 months ago seems to have been fixed now.

It works but how are you able to go back to full screen once you are in game? Alt Enter doesnt work and when i click the full screen button in windowed that just makes it go full screen with the window border still showing.
Use the free program "Borderless Gaming".
Dungeon siege 2 does have a cursor but it is in the bottom left corner of the stinking screen. They left some residual tools called the control panel and mouse options. In there enable "Show the location of my mouse when I hit the control key" and when you get to the main menu and hit it you'll see what I mean...
I have noticed this. It was actually the basis for my approach to this "simple" sollution; going into windowed mode.
It is kind of on purpose that I don't get into explaining technical stuff or even how I arrived at my conclusions and solution. Partially because it tends to get too complicated if I try, but also because sometimes it's really hard to explain a gut feeling based on experience.
I am a total nerd to the core and have a tendency to loose people by overthinking or explaining things (just look at this comment).
Which is also the reason why I have stopped narrating my videos. They almost never gets finished if I try, which kind of defeats the purpose of attempting to make them in the first place.

I downloaded through steam and I can't find any of the options that would allow me to make those changes. When I start the game, there is no mouse, no interaction, just the main menu. Is there any way to show the compatibility options? Im not great with computers
What you do is you:
1) Right-click on Dungeon Siege 2 in the actually library list in steam.
2) Choose properties at the bottom of the pop-up menu.
3) On the first tap "General" there is a button called "Set Launch Options"
4) Click it and just copy/paste or write the "fullscreen=false width=1912 height=1012 nointro=true" in there and click OK.
5) Cross your fingers and hope it works :)
But dude, steam ripping the multiplayer feature out of DS 1 and 2... you can't do mods you can add extra maps and stuff. Man, it's sad the way they mutilated them without realizing that they were actually also removing a defining "skirmish" kind of feature from the games.
In DSLOA there is actually a whole really awesome free roaming multiplayer map called "Utraean Perinsula" which originally comes with the game. You don't have access to it, not even if you only want to play it as a single player. So they pretty much cut half of the game away, by blocking access to the multiplayer feature, just because it was too circumstantial to intergrade into their steam multiplayer system. A guy called "Killah" did make a patch for it though.
@@Zhixalom ayyyy it worked! And yeah, the oppurtunity of multiplayer being yanked away is kinda sad. I mainly got the 3 game bundle for like 2$ to play through some old childhood games, so I guess this works out. Thank you for the help though, saved a lotta disappointment lmao

We are telling DS2 how to use windowed mode. If I put in the full 1920x1080 on my system DS2 will simply crash, so the goal is to use as much of the screen without exceeding the boundaries. So 8 and 68 in this case is the combined size of border of the DS2 window and the taskbar. It can vary depending on which version of Windows you are running and how you set it up.

Um, thats absolutely not true, it will not crash. I've played this game 50 times with the rez at full and never once had it crash. Also, use the mod ElysDS2Succubus to use even more options. you dont need to go though all of this that you have shown ,this is making it 10 times harder to make the game run.
@@ileria3 So how do you do it?...i have this game on cd(i.e not steam activated) and a version on steam...on both i have problems...and i think is related to this windows 10 developers something...windows 10 doesn't like old games

This works on Dungeon Siege 2, but not on Broken World(the expansion)... It says that the resolution has to be higher than 1024X768 (But the resolution on my laptop is already 1366x768)... And then, it forces it back to fullscreen mode, and then the mouse doesn't appear... I've tried many times to fix this using SteamCommunity but none work.
I don't know either, but I do have the same issue and you're not the only one.

I assume you mean 1366x768. Have you've tried "width=1358 height=700" (1366-8=1358 and 768-68=700) instead. If that doesn't work then try changing your screen resolution to 1280x720 and use "width=1272 height=652".
It keeps forcing me into fullscreen mode no matter what I do. It insist that the height has to be 768 at all times and it won't let me due anything about it, especially since that's the max height for my PC. I don't get why the game worked perfectly fine before Microsoft dumped another one of it's shitty updates on us that don't seem to do anything but cause issues.
That sucks... They change stuff so that the new stuff runs better and to improve security. Which is undeniably important. But it is often on account of the old stuff gradually becoming more and more incompatible. I guess the only real way around it is to try keep the old hardware and OS's alive.
I build this machine to be able to play some of the old 3DFx games from the late 90's:

I know there are drivers available to convert 3DFx and Voodoo2 to DirectX. But they always seem to need tons of tweaking just to work semi-okay and when you feel like playing, you just don't want to have to fiddle with all that stuff before you can get to it.
Now I am beginning to think about moving DS1 & DS2 onto that thing.
If your PC or laptop is 1366 x 768 you are out of luck. It requires a minimum of 1024 x 768 to run in windowed mode so your system resolution must be at least 1032 x 836 (1024+8 x 768+68).

This works only for the main game Dungeon Siege 2. This does not work for Dungeon Siege 2: Broken World.
I have around 10fps on my laptop with good specs (8gb ram, i7 3537u 2.5ghz and geforce GT 620M), does anyone know how to fix this? I also get 8% cpu usage. The funny thing is that I also have an intel nuc and there I get 30fps and 40%cpu usage...
Hard to say without more info on your setup... Have you got DirectX 9.0c July 2010 installed? - Because DS2 is "used to" using the older DirectX drivers. DS1 even crashes without them and it doesn't come with Windows 7, 8.x and 10 by default.

It is an odd problem. I have tried several games which would run slower on a faster machine. But never DS2 and I have played it on my i7 3.5 GHz 16GB stationary without any issues. So I don't think that is it either.
But I have noticed that both DSLOA and DS2 for reasons yet unknown seem to have more problems running on various laptops.
I just recalled something; back when we got Windows 7, some games on some machines (very simple games too) would run horribly slow for what seemed no reason. I (amongst others) discovered that if your turned off "Aero Effects" they would spring back to life... so maybe it could be something like that?

still, it's windowed mode and the camera is too much zoomed in. just need to zoom it out to match fullscreen mode
Yep, better than not being able to play at all. Btw here is a mod for controlling the camera. I think there are actually several.

Did you put the parameters into the Broken World shortcut as well or only the DS2 one? (obviously you have to do it with both shortcuts)

Of course, you can't select "Run in Windows 10" when you are using Windows 10. Don't get "Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows XP" and "Windowed Mode" mixed up, those are two very different things.
You want to "Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows XP" because that sets up the system environment to look like WindowsXP from the game's perspective.
Furthermore, you want to run the game inside a window on your desktop (instead of fullscreen) and that is what the parameter "fullscreen=false" does, this is what is called "windowed mode".
The "width=1912" and "height=1012" define the insides of the window 1912x1012 pixels and the reason why I show the calculation is in case you want to do it for a different resolution other than 1920x1080. The "nointro=true" parameter skips the intro-video and jumps directly into the game.
For those who are lazy and wanna copy this:
fullscreen=false width=1912 height=1012 nointro=true
The amount of pixels you'll need to substract depends on your screen resolution and Windows theme. If the window ends up being even one pixel too large, the game will crash. Which is why I felt it necessary to show how I arrived at those numbers... But point taken and description edited.

I don't get that message. But it is likely because I use different anti-malware/virus software than you do... So it could be a false positive or could not be.
