  • This 1990s Disney Little Mermaid movie cover art was banned by Disney in the mid 1990s and some claim that the VHS VCR tapes are worth thousands along with other Disney The Classics Black Diamond editions. I listed my own on Ebay and I'll tell you what I discovered

I felt like such an idiot. Several years ago we purchased about 5 of these VHS tapes from the Salvation Army thinking they were worth a lot. Fortunately we only paid 50 cents per tape.

I’m so happy someone finally came out and debunked this! Thank you! Great video. Fun fact too: the black diamond Lion King tape is actually a bootleg. My cousins had that one when we were growing up, and the playback quality is awful.

I just raided my sister's old room, I knew she had those disney movies and I found a treasure! Lots of Disneys - Peter Pan, Thumbelina, and others. Yes, I found the mermaid with the golden pnis on the cover.

Little Mermaid has 4 different style clamshell cases, did you know that? I have them and they are all black diamond vhs versions. I got them from a storage unit auction. Do you have any information on the types of clamshell disney cases?

That was my thought too.. the only VHS I re bought was the Muppets Christmas carol only because it has that song on there they took out of the DVD.. so I am planing on ripping the VHS into digital format for that song. 😁

Which song isn’t on the dvd? I loved that movie as a kid and am so curious about which song got cut!

Thanks for the video, hopefully it will help to keep people from buying stupid. Man this stuff has been going on on eBay for at least FIFTEEN years and shows no signs of letting up. I don't know what they can do to stop it, but they're not stopping it in any case. Here's a helpful hint for both these Disney black diamonds, and other suspicious stuff, if you want to get an idea of the REAL value of an item:
Go to "sold" listings - click on "auction" and then sort by number of bids. You'll get a list of the items that got the most bids irrespective of $$$ they sold for. Doing this eliminates most if not all of the obvious scams - the scammers don't typically bother creating a bunch of different accounts so as to have multiple authentic-looking bids. When I do that for Disney black diamond, right now, I get in the first page listings with between 5 and 42 bids. ONE of those sales was for over $100 and it was for a screener copy - and screener copies are in fact scarcer than regular copies (they are the copies that went to video stores, critics, publicists, etc - there might be 5-10,000 of them in the case of big titles, as opposed to MILLIONS for the regular release). Three others - also for screeners - were in the $50-100 range. Everything else, less, including a lot of 52 tapes for $41. Not gonna buy a house - or a car, or a tv, or a phone - with that profit.
VHS is starting to get more popular as a collectible, so I do think some of these Disney titles might have a small future - stuff like the screeners I mentioned, factory-sealed titles, and especially the scarcer titles from either the earliest or last days of the format; I think Cars for example is a little scarcer, because it came out when VHS was almost dead and there are fewer of them. But the main Disney titles were all produced in HUGE quantities in almost every edition so even things like the Little Mermaid with the "banned" art are not rare at all. They may be worth more than they are now some day. Maybe in the hundreds of dollars - some day. But $5-10k? That's dreaming. Now, I've got some rare beanie babies and cabbage patch dolls to sell you....

I also did research on sellers background etc and then went through and read Ebay rules on listing items etc
And from what I read you cannot even list items for sale over a certain amount unless you have previous transactions and has to be so many. Basically you have to build your credit to sell high dollar amount items. So how could they have had no transactions? Also the ones that I researched I noticed that some of the proceeds went to a charity so thought that could be another reason someone would pay those amounts. I'm curious as to what makes these transactions a hoax though? Are you saying Ebay rigged it? Just don't understand your conclusion

these are sellers of owners of the VHS tapes but they have more than one account. So for example they will list a tape for 1000 bucks with their fake account that they have no intentions of selling because no one will buy, they on their real account they will list for 500 in the hopes to find a sucker because they see the 1000. Ebay is not selling the tapes and has nothing to do with it.
