You're so right on paint! We learned several years ago when we just couldn't get roller marks off of the walls what a difference good paint makes. And truly - painting sounds easy, but hiring a (really good) professional painter is worth the $$$.

Thank you thank you thank you Arvin for giving this advice about hiring contractors! As the wife of a residential contractor, I see him being underbid by other contractors who are not competent, aren’t licensed or under insured. He is frequently invited to come in and fix the mistakes later. He doesn’t typically take these jobs because he knows those home owners don’t value his labor or experience. And thank you Arvin for not laying all the blame on this contractor. Homeowners need to take responsibility for their decisions.

When preparing a house for sale, I got burned hiring a retired colleague who only charged "the friend price." He had 2 or 3 young guys on his crew and they did sloppy, half-ass work. They also caused a water leak which ruined the new floor they had just installed, so they had to replace that. There's more, but you get the idea. Don't hire family/friends unless you know in advance that they do quality work without drama.

I have generally followed this rule throughout my marriage (50 years!) and have occasionally done without something for awhile until I could afford what I really wanted. This rule holds true for most appliances, electronic devises, etc. A good example of buying cheap would be me buying inexpensive woven hampers and having to keep replacing them because then fell apart. Instead, I finally invested in a beautiful, expensive, teak wood hamper (which is what I always wanted) and have had it now for about 20 years and counting. My style hasn't changed so the hamper still fits my design esthetic. A definite win/win. Thank you for another great post.

You can absolutely go cheap and amazing.
I'm doing plaster walls painted in limeash, limewashed terracota roof tiles that rest on wood, cheap blue-grey stone tile flooring. I'm getting used furniture and getting it refinished, old windows and doors as well. There are just a few items I'll buy, but I would rather get a plain wool or sisal rug than a complex and beautiful poliéster one. So far it's working for me, but I'm not too particular about anything.

Am I the ONLY one that misses Arvin's Home Goods video's? It seems that all of the influencer's in this space have started off shopping at Target and Home Goods and now they shop at RH or Arhaus, and they don't take us shopping, plus they change their own furniture constantly. Where they were once hilarious and interesting, now they're all sitting on their couch telling us their favorite things with their affiliate links included. Hey, I get it. There are only so many things you can buy for your own home and as your channels grow, your taste level grows to the point Target isn't going to cut it anymore (although I was there today and they have the most beautiful vessels). I don't really know the answer. But the thing is, we start watching and stay watching the ones with the sparkling personalities, but honestly, if I see any more Brooklinen sponsored video's ...I just can't.

@@tiffaniemcmillan209 You're missing the point. Let's say you have a favorite singer who you started watching years ago when they sang a certain style you enjoyed and then they got popular and now they sing an entirely different style, a style that you just don't care for.
I can use the singer Amy Grant as a loose example. She started off as a Christian singer and it wasn't my thing, but she switched to pop and I enjoyed her, however, her Christian music fans were deeply disappointed. I think she does both now, I lost track of her.
People evolve, but can lose the followers you once had or they won't be that excited to watch your new stuff. However, you'll attract viewers that can afford to buy higher end furniture. It's just attracting a different viewer. It's not terrible if you can keep up viewership, but it's disappointing for those of us who loved Arvin and others, from when he shopped with us and was hysterically funny. When I watch Arvin now, his content is informative, but there's no more Sally Sue, and that's what I lived for from him. His ad-libbing! I will remain a viewer unless his content once in California, becomes so different, I can no longer relate. Does this make sense?

My son calls both my husband and I serial hoarders. We downsized 4 years ago to a smaller home, couldn’t sell the furniture because here in Australia most people don’t want to buy second hand (we have no small children) We couldn’t even give it away and even the charities were overflowing. It was raining so we went knocking on doors. People who answered the ads wanted it delivered. What a nightmare. Anyway 9 months ago we did another downsize. OMG I discovered, ok I sort of knew because I have a thing for pots and saucepans, I had 53 cooking vessels! 53. We have so much beautiful stuff that we haven’t used in years. We are slowly working our way through to a minimalistic life. Thank you for all your videos. Love your personality.

You are so 100% correct! I was one of the last ones to landscape my back yard in our new development. The reason is because I did my research on what it entails to do the project correctly. For instance...proper excavation, the distance required next to walls for trees,. The company I chose to go with took two days to complete the project, including assembling and placing a gazebo on brick work. It turned out amazing! It was expensive, but, Oh so worth it! I think the other problem that was not touched on is the lack of communication and cross checking peoples work. Overly communicate with your contractor - a list , I use post it notes to highlight specific areas (as a reminder) and images of what I want to be super specific and minimize any confusion. In the middle of a project I always keep close communication and check their work. And address anything that I’m not a fan of. And cross check before they leave at the end of a project.
Personally I’ve never had any mishaps with a contractor. But I go above and beyond to read reviews and ask a lot of questions when I do a consultation with the top 3 contractors I am interested in.
As a female, the initial introduction is always interesting with the contractors (it’s always a man). Lol but I do research on what I’m asking for as well so I know what to expect, the questions to ask and a general ball park of how much the service will cost.

Arvin these were all great tips! Being cheap is VERY expensive. I was surprised to see you gloss over fashion though. I did like that you pointed out cheap fabric, because that is the base of all fashion items. A beautifully crafted wool gaberdine suit, pricy initially, will last you 10+ years and give you 100's of mix and match wardrobe options, where as, a cheap fabric suit is going to cost you much more in the long run. You'll end up replacing it over and over again! Always consider the cost per wear when you invest in fine clothing! The same is surely true in home furnishing too. I have gorgeous traditional, home furnishing, which can really get expensive. My solution, bay them at a local auction house, not on-line! Impulse buying is probably one of the worst impulses to overcome when shopping, If I'm tempted to make a snap decision about a purchase, I've trained myself to go home and sleep on it. If I wake up still wanting that item, I will return to the store. If it's there, it was meant to be, otherwise, it just wasn't! Worst case scenario, I missed out on a good deal. Realizing that's there's ALWAYS a "good deal" to be had ANY time you walk into a store, really helped me avoid costly expenditures. Keep up the great content. Love you and your channel! 💗💗💗

The final observation on cheap couches is the Holy Grail of design. If a well made new couch or sectional is not in your budget, you can always find a high quality vintage or previously owned option at every price point.

I'm contemplating some sofa options from Pottery Barn. Do you consider Pottery Barn sofas quality?

I totally agree with you!!!! I made the mistake of hiring cheap and it’s going to cost me! It’s so frustrating. I totally regret it… Also, I noticed a huge difference when I switched from cheap paint to Benjamin Moore paint. And no more Ikea sofas for me. Quality is key. So many good tips!!!!

It’s like you just visited my home, lolol. My walls are Benjamin Moore simply white. I bought a fantastic coffee table that was at the high end of my budget, solid wood, dovetailed, ball bearing drawers that slide like buttah. Paid it off, now ordered the bedroom chest of my dreams. Fell in love. The bedroom furniture is more than i can currently afford (8k), but I am buying one piece at a time. It will last me many, many years, which I love. My daughter said she wants it after I’m gone, lol. The point being, I am purchasing quality pieces that I love on a time table that works for me. I am not a person that always switches things out, I keep furniture for a long time, so it needs clean, classic lines. Thnak you, Arvin, loved your vids as always. This one rates a chef’s kiss 💋!

i really like your tip on your checklist “does this item actually match my interior style” its a great tip. I totally have bought pieces because i just like them without them matching my interior style at home. And then they totally don't match at all.

Ugh I just did the same mistake. I hired someone for my bathroom for a “one day job” He’s come to my house 10 times over three weeks now.
I also got a dupe for the little Petra chair from Eternity Modern. Huge mistake. Should have spent the money on the original.

@@andrealvoesyou it doesn’t look anywhere near as good as the photos. The photos make it look almost identical to the real thing. In person it’s obviously fake af. They charge a lot to return so I’m stuck with it but otherwise I absolutely would have returned it.

Highly agree with getting the best TVs! I know people who opted for the more budget brands because they offer smart TV capabilities, but the LED/OLED screens ended up being defective or the streaming software would just die on them. We chose the high-end models of LG and Samsung and they've lasted for years without issue.

I learned this lesson with shoes and handbags. Just splurge on the $190 leather sandals, they’ll last YEARS compared to the pleather ones on Amazon. Totally worth it.

You are spot on in this video! I made the mistake of buying a daybed I didn't like just because it was cheaper than what I really wanted.. I lived with it for about a month and then ended up giving it to a neighbor and bought the one I really wanted. I totally wasted $250, ugh. I've made that mistake too more times than I want to admit. I've learned my lesson now. 🥰

Something similar happened to us when we were renovating our kitchen, we went with the home depot contractor since he was installing our cabinets we thought it would be ok to give him our dry wall project and omg the biggest mistake of our life, he only had one employee he took almost two months to finish our kitchen some things were crooked, so we called home depot and they call an old guy out of retirement to come fix our kitchen 😅 he didn’t do much so we sold the house because it was causing too much anxiety.

I paid for quality paint for our home years ago. It's a very neutral colour and that paint looks as good today as the day it was painted. It was an absolute investment. My dad told me 'buy the best quality you can afford' and he was so right. I totally agree with saving up to get better quality than buying cheap. Some things you can spend less on. But if it's something functional that you want to last, pay the extra for quality.

Superb advice, as always, Arvin. My advice is don’t buy anything in a hurry or just because it’s on sale. Sofas, beds & showers are big ticket items that you will use regularly. Do your homework including measuring before you buy.
