I think Lars was brilliant on this album, a feat he unfortunately has never equaled. I think what most disappoints me about him is how he can achieve greatness on one album and be complete rubbish on another (St. Anger) and also his live struggles during parts of the 2000s. What is the reason for his inconsistency - lack of practice?

@@atides33could be, lack of practise. Or alcohol. But he is a much better player he gets credit for. Worst thing about Lars is he can be a dick to people, even band mates around him. And lets not talk about the drum sound on a certain album😢😂

    • @beirch
      @beirch 9 месяцев назад

Oh come on, he does not have "amazing footwork". He's serviceable at best. If you do some digging you'll find interviews from studio assistants saying a good chunk of production time on AJFA was spent cobbling together drum takes.
I agree though, he is perfect for Metallica and is often a great driving force. Where he really shines is song arrangement, which he does on every single Metallica song, and is quite good at.

Technically, the musicianship is impressive. The vocals are gritty, somewhat angry and hard to understand but, that’s heavy metal. That drummer literally drove the whole performance. Hard to ignore his power and the energy required to sustain such rhythm and the level of energy required. I’m no heavy metal fan but yes, Metallica always gives their fans what they crave. I couldn’t hear for at least 2 hours after we left lol My friends and I were laughing so hard because we’re all screaming at each other and we went to some pancake house to eat and the waitress came up to us and said “How was the concert!?” LoL we were so high we just died laughing and then we were thinking how did she know!? 🧐
So we asked how did you know!? She said “You all are wearing Metallica shirts and everyone is screaming at each other! Before that I guess we thought we were talking normal!? 😂

I just saw them live in Arlington TX this past Aug 18th & 20th (it was a 2 night show) they were ABSOLUTELY AWESOME as usual!! They performed for at least 2 hours each night, different songs both nights and that is one of the songs they played!! It was EPIC!!! Man, I screamed, shouted and sang so much and so loud that I blew my voice out and I wasn't able to talk much above a loud hoarse whisper 3 days later! Absolutely worth it!!!!!! Consider this, all the guys are either 60 or pushing 60 y/o and they ROCK just as HARD now as they did 24 years ago when I saw them for the first time in 1999. 🤘Rock On!🤘 Kelly

I get what you’re saying about the pauses. I used to play in a band that did a lot of pauses. Honestly, it gets easier the more you do it. The more the band practices the more in-sync you get with each other. I don’t know how the magic works, but it definitely feels like magic.

You should watch metallica's documentary "Some kind of monster". They show a kind of messy part of their careers. But I loved a quote from Lars Ulrich saying that they created aggressive music without negative emotions. This is what separates Metallica from all/most other metal bands. They are not devil worshippers, they are just channeling aggression in a way that energizes you.

    Key members of Metallica:
James Hetfield - Lyricist, Rhythm Guitarist, Songwriter
Kirk Hammett - Lead Guitarist, Guitar Soloist
    Lars Ulrich - Drummer, Songwriter
    Bassists for Metallica:
Cliff Burton - Kill 'Em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets (additional credits on ...And Justice for All)
Jason Newstead - ...And Justice for All, Metallica (coloquially known as "The Black Album), Load, Reload
Robert Trujillo - Death Magnetic, Hardwired to Self-Destruct, 72 Seasons
    Notes:
James and Lars met and formed the core of what would become Metallica in 1981 in Los Angeles, California. Guitarist Dave Mustaine and bassist Ron McGovney later joined them as the band progressed into 1982. After seeing the bassist for the band Trauma one night at a club, James and Lars were determined to get him into the band, but he would only agree to join them if they moved to San Francisco. They agreed and as Ron was looking to leave the band anyway, Metallica made the move and added Cliff as their new bassist. The lineup remained stable until mid 1983 when, while on their way to New York City, Dave made his presence in the band unbearable with his heavy drinking and savage violent behavior. So upon reaching New York and contacting Kirk through a mutual friend, Dave was sent home on a bus while Kirk was flown in to take his place. This brings us to the full starting lineup on the band's first album, "Kill 'Em All" - James, Kirk, Cliff, and Lars. (Amusing side note, the title for their first album was originally supposed to be "Metal Up Your Ass" but the record lable they were recording with wouldn't allow it, and an off-hand remark from Cliff became the genesis of the album's finalized title.)
The quartet were a solid force of nature from the outset, filling ever expanding tours until the release of "Master of Puppets" in 1986 saw them opening for Ozzy Osbourne in the US and headlining their own tour with Anthrax in Europe. A dark night on the road after a great show in late September turned into a nightmare as their tour bus skidded, flipped, and rolled, throwing Cliff through a window only for the bus to land on top of him, killing him, and sending his band mates into a raging spiral of grief. They barely had time to take Cliff's body home and bury him when they were pushed to take on a replacement bassist in order to finish out the tour. Three weeks after Cliff's death, Jason was selected to take his place.
The band seemed to struggle at first, but they did settle into the new arrangements, skyrocketing into mainstream success rapidly with each new album. Everything seemed stable until early 2001 when Jason announced that he was leaving the band, which sent the others reeling. James went into rehab for several months, and with no bassist, producer Bob Rock filled in for the recording of "Saint Anger" (though he was never officially recognized as a band member, more of a "session musician" kind of role) while the entire three year turmoil around the band was filmed and turned into the infamous "Some Kind of Monster" documentary film. As the band completed the new album, they auditioned for a new bassist and found Robert to be more than up for the challenge by opening his audition with the song "Battery", probably Metallica's fastest and most brutal song to play, easily keeping pace with the band. Robert has since proven time and again his worth and remains a solid and steadfast member to this day.

This album has the most aggressiveness, attitiude, fuck the man mentality out ofnl all their albums. Just needs more bass. The solos, drums, guitar and vocals are all in your face and angry.

Great reaction. You didn't miss a thing, except maybe the bass. All metal fans know about that one. Lars (drummer)gets a little too much hate. If you wanna hear some mind-blowing drums, check out Mario Duplatier from Gojira. ruclips.net/video/fCf-27sbEFU/видео.html Lyric version as well. Cheers!

Lars is a good drummer and a legend in his own right…but he is not the best metal drummer out there.
as for who’s who in the band:
James Hetfield - lead vocal / rhythm guitar
    Lars Ulrich - drums
    Kirk Hammet - lead guitar
Cliff Burton / Jason Newsted / Rob Trujillo - Bass
James and Lars are the only original members left. Kirk replaced Dave Mustaine (of Megadeth) during the recording of the first album, Kill ‘Em All. Cliff replaced the original bassist, Ron McGovney who quit after the first year due to tension with Lars and Dave. Cliff was on the first 3 albums before he was killed in a bus accident while touring for Master of Puppets. Jason then replaced Cliff, before leaving to work on his own projects. Jason was there for a covers EP, a covers complication album and 4 original albums between 86-01. the band then recorded St Anger without a permanent bassist, letting producer Bob Rock fill in. that didn’t work very well, so they hired Rob and Rob has been there since. 3 full albums, an EP, a disastrous crossover concept album as the backing band and a live album later…and still counting.
    Metallica in a nutshell.

Lars Ulrich is the drummer in Metallica, and he'd be the first to admit to you he's not the greatest drummer!! You want to hear a great drummer, Listen to Rush. Neil Peart is the Percussionist/Lyricist. Song - Freewill Album - Permanent Waves, from 1980. Yes, there is a difference between a Drummer, and a Percussionist... Neil is a Percussionist. But also a Drummer. Are you confused yet? Just listen to Rush, and it will all make sense!😉

Lars isn't actually very good when you compare him to every other drummer in this era of metal. 😂
