This is the 5th in my series of videos documenting the damage due to (and recovery from) Hurricane Ian in Fort Myers and Sanibel Island.
On September 28th, 2022, Hurricane Ian made landfall in Southwest Florida as a Category 4 storm. The storm generated winds of up to 150 MPH and storm surge levels between 12 and 18 feet. Almost the entire island of Sanibel was covered in multiple feet of water.
Parts of the Sanibel Causeway (the only road that connects the island with the mainland) were washed away by the storm surge.
Hurricane Ian left Sanibel Island covered in damage and debris.
The recovery effort to fix the damage and restore Sanibel Island to the lush Gulf of Mexico paradise it is known as has started in earnest.
Even though the island is still in very rough shape, positive changes are being made on a daily basis.
These videos and photos were taken on December 14th, 2022 on a ride across Sanibel Island -- from the Sanibel Causeway Hurricane Pass checkpoint, along Periwinkle Drive, down Tarpon Bay Road, to West Gulf Drive (and then back again).
I also stopped to take photos and video at the site of the huge debris field on the corner of Periwinkle Way and Purdy Drive. It appears that most of Sanibel's right-of-way debris is being temporarily stored at this site before it is being taken off-island.
There is good news + progress being made. Lots of greenery is returning to the island foliage. Most of Periwinkle Way is now clear of debris piles along the right-of-way. And trucks, workers, residents, and business owners are hard at work, seemingly around the clock, trying to get Sanibel returned to its new normal.
That said, progress is being made very slowly along West Gulf Drive, which also happens to be where the absolute worst Hurricane Ian damage seems to have happened.
Here's to hoping they can get that particular part of Sanibel a little more cleaned up before the Sanibel Causeway reopens to the public on January 2nd, 2023.
This video was created to document what Sanibel Island looked like during this specific time of the Hurricane Ian damage recovery effort.

I'm not shocked, I rode it out here in Cape Coral and we had the very same thing.

There is another huge pile near the entrance to The Sanctuary on Wulfert. I think it is much larger.
