Heartbreaking! Hurricane Ian leaves Sanibel Island covered in damage and debris.
On September 28th, 2022, Hurricane Ian made landfall in Southwest Florida as a Category 4 storm. The storm generated winds of up to 150 MPH and storm surge levels between 12 and 18 feet. Almost the entire island of Sanibel was covered in multiple feet of water.
Parts of the Sanibel Causeway (the only road that connects the island with the mainland) were washed away by the storm surge.
Beginning October 5th, 2022 Sanibel residents, businesses, and homeowners were allowed to access the island by boat... at their own risk. These videos and photos were taken on an October 6th, 2022 boat charter from the Imperial River Boat Ramp in Bonita Springs to Sanibel Island (and back).
This video was created to document what Sanibel Island looked like in the days before the Sanibel Causeway reopened after Hurricane Ian, when residents and business owners still needed to travel to Sanibel by boat.
These video clips and photos were taken between Imperial River Boat Ramp in Bonita Springs, Wiggins Pass in North Naples, the water near the Sanibel Causeway, Gramma Dots, The coast along West Gulf Drive, and the east end of Periwinkle Way and Sanibel Island.

We have been coming to Sanibel for 33 years. The destruction of Ian is just awful! We are hopeful for the future. It will just take time.
