  • Mr Kyle Mulligan, Vice-President of Operations Technology at CPKC explains the beginnings of the CPKC water-only emissions locomotives from start to finish. Custom designed H2OEL (H2 zero emissions locomotive) powerplants with custom designed drive systems and computerized electronics were invented and adapted for electric locomotive use. The development and construction base is CP 1001 an SD40-2F. These locomotives are a big step toward emissions controls for immediate and future locomotive emissions guidelines.
During 2022 CP 1001 and 1002 were built with plans to expand production and in July 2023 the first hydrogen powered passenger train departed from Calgary.
Congratulations to Mr Mulligan and his innovative team for their contribution to rail sustainability and the continued success of CPKC throughout North America and beyond.

That one is the CSX proto type which CPKC built together as prototypes.

Seen One on the rails in good weather, but what about at slower speeds at -30 with a wind? Will their be enough exhaust force to keep the exhaust stack and air intake from freezing up?

CPKC operated one of these last winter between Edmonton and Calgary. Only time will tell though....

Hi. There will be a much more in-depth video in the near future about hydrogen powered locomotives. I will give you the basics now and if you have any questions please ask. CPKC has begun a partnership with CSX whereby CSX will provide a complete locomotive yard (Chesapeake and Ohio) for conversion of GE AC4400CW's and GE ES44AC's to hydrogen powered locomotives.
CPKC has operated CP 1001 (EMD GP9) and 1002 (EMD SD40F) since March 2023 and both were spotted in Minnesota July 1, 23. In Sept of 2023 CP 1003 (GE AC4400CW - the oldest non-CWM of CP) began trials in the Sept-Dec quarter on heavier coal loads through a pilot project with Teck Resources.
The hydrogen locomotive is similar to diesel operations and CPKC already has the infrastructure in place for hydrogen which is being produced by a solar 5MW hydrogen generator in Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. Refueling is similar to diesel meaning the hydrogen fills up the tanks, is mixed with oxygen in a fuel cell which produces electricity which runs the standard AC drive motors and everything else (mostly original parts). Basically, elimination of the diesel motor which is replaced with fuel cells. After trials in 2023, CPKC says the hydrogen locomotives will produce much more than a 6000hp diesel and their partnership with Teck is to trial hydrogen locos on 152 car coal trains with 1 lead and 1 trail locomotive through the rocky mountains to Vancouver. This eliminates half of the diesel fleet with emissions of zero. Of course the production of hydrogen must be emissions-free. Thanks for asking and have a great day!

VERY IMPRESSED WITH THE DESIGN SPECS & HOW RAPIDLY CP NOW CPKC TOOK ON THE CHALLENGE: THANKS TO CPKC MANAGEMENT, DESIGN TEAM.
AND THE YOUNG 1ST NATIONS STUDENT WHO 1ST PRESENTED HIS IDEAS & CONCEPT TO CEO CREEL.
THE LIVERY DESIGN IS PROGRESSIVE & EYE CATCHING. SAME WITH THE CPKC LOCOMOTIVE LIVERY DESIGN.

Hydrogen is the dumbest fuel imaginable for locomotives. It takes six units of electricity to make one unit of hydrogen, and then you burn it at much less than 100% efficiency to make electricity again and power the traction motors. Just electrify the railway line and power the trains directly by electricity.

Yep, that would be the tried and true method.
