Canadian Pacific Railway: History of a Design

  • Canadian Pacific Railway, much like its neighbor Canadian National Railway, has gone through quite a few changes in its longstanding 140 year history. Canadian Pacific began its story after completing its transcontinental route across the still developing nation. After its completion in 1886, a logo was needed that would catch people's attention on timetables. This would result in a shield design, with a beaver being added later on. However, the Victorian-era style of it could only last so long, and CPR found itself creating many new designs to keep up with the times. Whether it be the beaver and shield design, Multimark, a Helvetica wordmark, or Canadian Pacific's current return to form beaver and shield and modern typeface logo, I'll be discussing the evolution of Canadian Pacific's graphic design.

I'm just wondering if the CPKCS will do what BNSF did and go from iconic paint schemes to a traffic cone inspired eyesore. CPKCS is also very boring and unimaginative branding so my hopes aren't up on this one.

This is a great series focusing on the graphic design aspect of railroads. Glad to see my favorite Canadian Class I being featured for this episode. I hope that with the CPKC merger, the heritage of both railroads are still kept in tact. It would be a real shame of they got rid of the iconic beaver. Why can't they just let KCS be its own railroad, or at least absorb it with CP without getting rid of CP's image.

On a side note, the green boxcars with the pine tree logo were phased out, after Maine Central filed a lawsuit against CP for violating a copyright on the pine tree logo they used at the time. It was likely sparked by a rivalry at the time between CP and MEC, since the Bangor and Aroostook was trying to divert as much traffic as possible to CP, which is a much longer story in itself. Hence why the cars became known as “lawsuit scheme” cars.

UPDATE: That CPKC has revealed their new print scheme basically like the CP livery but the back given a Yellow and Black the Beaver logo now has CPKC on the bottom replacing the 1881 label and given a CP KCS & KCSM on the top and their Paint Scheme was a bit of a wreck off of CN's Livery

I really appreciated this video. I grew up during the multi-mark era, so to me it still seems like the "standard" CP logo. But this video helps me understand that multimark was actually a fairly brief stage in the history of their branding. The obvious comparison is with CN's "noodle" logo - both the multimark and CN noodle are "modernist" logos from the 60s. The CN modernist logo has certainly lasted a lot longer!

For those railway fans that wish to see the iconic CP multimark again, rest assured, it still exists today! Although in a modified version, by Carnival Cruises.
For many years, I often thought there was something vaguely familiar with Carnival Cruises' logo. After reading the book "$elling the $ea", I found out why.
According to the book "$elling the $ea", Carnival Cruises bought their first cruise ship from Canadian Pacific, the Empress of Canada. The Empress of Canada had CPR's multimark on it's funnel. Carnival Cruises liked this logo so much that they kept it. CPR said "No, that's our logo.", so Carnival changed it a little. They rounded the point of the triangle, made the semi circle thinner, and the background square is no longer a square, it's now the base colour for the background of the logo. The black on white on green colour scheme was also changed (green being used for ships), to blue on white on red, matching the colours of the US flag. Have a peek at any Carnival ship's funnel and you'll see the similarity!

I numbered it 642. I disassembled it in 2018 and swapped the shells for some from a Bachmann Southern Railway 630. What would be really innovative is that CP develops a passenger system to take advantage of their huge network. I love logos but can't help thinking the focus is all in the wrong place.

The multimark did not "disappear" from CP. It was SOLD along with the airline. For several years it was used in place of the vowel In "Canadixn" on the Canadian Airlines planes, where the x was either A in English or the E in Francais.
The Golden Rat emblem includes the date 1881, which made Omer Lavallee's blood boil as corporate historian. His comment was that he would be willing to attend centenaries from1981 to at least 1996 in each community celebrating CPR's arrival there, or corporate significant dates which happened over that 15 year span. He swore there was no one date that marked the centennial of CPR.
