      Actually I’m sure 0.0001% of people wants to pronounce correctly Chinese name and as a chinese I’m sad about this because I just don’t understand why most of the people wants to pronounce correctly Japanese names or just original names like Seele or Wriothesley and when it’s chinese name they don’t care

    • @Calithilhel
      @Calithilhel Год назад +32

      @@kleber8793I can't speak for most people and I think it's undeniable that westerners usually have a more negative outlook on china than japan and so ultimately interact positively with Japanese culture more often, which does suck, Chinese culture and language is just as cool. However I'm English monolingual and tried to learn the pronunciations of both languages, Japanese doesn't use sounds not present in English except for the r/l, it's actually so easy, but Mandarin is full of sounds and nuances that make it a tongue-twister for me. A bunch of sounds do have close examples but they aren't always exact and they definitely aren't beside other sounds and syllables you'd see them beside in English, making the movements/sounds feel unnatural until you practice them a lot. Japanese pronunciation is just genuinely much closer to English pronunciation than Mandarin is, so Mandarin has been a much greater challenge for me, I think that's typical for most people.

    Oh I'm glad this video popped up for me because I was curious about some of the newer ones. I'm not (currently at least :)) learning any mandarin, but as an Arab person whose name was often mispronounced for no reason, I try my best with names from other cultures and languages. Jingliu's is actually the most shocking for me because of the secret o. I think what I need to practice myself is sounding more natural as I say the names and less like I'm copying the slow "learning to say this" accent. I've gotten pretty good at it in genshin, just need to hear them more in HSR to get a little better at it there, since so many people do the shortcut versions of their names with English accents. Thank you for your video :)

    It's always interesting to me how intuitive Mandarin name pronunciation is for me as a German native speaker. Without any knowledge of the language I instinctively pronounce most of the names correctly with the biggest difference being that I don't automatically recognise when to use ü instead of u since German writes that sound explicitly when used.

    • @Sky-rw5vq
      @Sky-rw5vq 7 месяцев назад

      As a native Mandarin Chinese speaker who had taken elementary school in China I never heard about the u to ü rule. You are supposed to roll the sounds into one syllable because each character is just one syllable. If you do that to j/q/x/y followed by u you naturally get the ü sound. So while it's technically correct, the rule seems unnecessary to me.

  • @cactustactics
    @cactustactics Год назад +18

    Haven't played this but the background info was interesting, and the pronunciation stuff is always super helpful! Those little hidden rules too, I never realised the u in yuán was really a ü, I just know how it sounds
    I've been trying to think of an English word ending in -arng because that would nail the shang pronunciation for my (north of England) accent, but I don't think there is one :(

  • @pamelanessa

    There are also some Russian names in the game that not many players know how to pronounce. Even the voice actors pronounce them with a very significant accent to the point where it's a hardly recognizable name. For example, Pela, full name Pelageya Sergeyevna. Check out the difference between the way how it's pronounced in the game (the very first voice line of the character), and in the google translater, insert "Пелагея Сергеевна", and select Russian language there.

    Thanks for your great channel. Chinese people seem to have a great sense of, sometimes almost slapstick-like, humor. A more general question: when you talk in English but want to impress a Chinese (mandarin?) mindset you always add “unnecessary” sounds to the end of words. Like at the beginning of this video: “Very exiting-aaah”. I find that fascinating. Is that a way to express enthusiasm or more to stress importance? Are there any set rules for this or is it more a matter of dialectic / intuitive treatment? It would be very interesting if you could tell us a bit about this subject because this approach seems to be absent from all the languages I know (Dutch, English, German, French, Italian, Spanish (in constantly reducing order of eloquence). 😁
