  • Precisely a century ago, Kerala’s Vaikom town which was then in the princely state of Travancore became the epicentre of a historic non-violent movement against untouchability and caste discrimination.
Vaikom Satyagraha that lasted for 604 days (20 months) from March 30, 1924 to November 23, 1925 marked the dawn of temple entry movements across India.
It was led by visionary leaders like T.K. Madhavan, K.P. Kesava Menon, and K. Kelappan. The Satyagraha attracted national attention and many prominent leaders came to participate in the protest, including Periyar, who came to Vaikom at the request of barrister George Joseph, who had already been jailed for leading the movement.
The movement gained more power when Mahatma Gandhi reached Vaikom on March 1925 and held discussions with leaders of various caste groups.
This video looks back at the events that unfolded.

"The Hindu" channel didn't post full information. They just projected Tamilians who participated in Vaikom Satyahraha. They didn't even mention about the famous reformer Sree Narayana Guru who had a major role in this Satyagraha, but they projected about the Tamilians involved. Sree Narayana Guru had a meeting with Mahatma Gandhi when Gandhiji came to Vaikom and that meeting is very famous.

'The Hindus have their social yewils. But there is this relieving feature about them-namely, that some of them are conscious of their existence and a few of them are actively agitating for their removal. The Muslims, on the other hand, do not realize their social yewils and consequently do not agitate for their removal. Indeed, they oppose any change in their existing practices. Muslims have all the social yewils of the Hindus and something more. That something more is the compulsory system of purdah which deprives Muslim women of physical, mental and moral nourishment. Me being from "lower" caste.
I wont say Hinduism is the problem here.
It is the social structure creation by upper caste people who manipulated everything for their benefit...

India didn't have a "caste" system, to begin with. Caste is a Portuguese word.
      India only had varna system.
In Christian europe, the situation of lower classes was much worse than it was in India.

@@mlg1279 so u r saying, india has no caste system. Everyone is allowed to walk on the upper caste street. During pashwa rule in maharashtra there is no need for the dalit people to walk with broom to clean their footprint as they walk. In thirvananthapuram kingdom the Elava caste wome were allowed to wear shoulder cloth to cover their breast. In madurai and kaluthi in TN, nadar caste people were allowed to enter the temple, they just protested there just for fun.
Ok the work caste is Portuguese work, that's doesn't explain caste oriented here.
How come u r so damp say, caste is not their in india

Lol! The person who twisted hindu epics for his preaching? I am myself coming from ezhava community- Sree narayana guru made temple for us to worship , taught hinduism fought for us. It was against caste system not against hinduism - But the situation was so worse that no one could fight against caste system without bringing hinduism. I am glad that I was born in background like this - It give me more clear picture of woke jai bheem and people like periyar.

Unfortunately caste is a scourge of India. People get treated differently based on their caste. This prejudice against different castes especially brahmins and non brahmins gets exported abroad.

It is indeed painful to realise political democracy has been reduced to ‘communal majority’! Being from Karnataka and I have never been able to resolve this mystery behind the ideological disparities we have with our immediate neighbours of TN, Kerala why do we not have strong regional parties like them? Am I the only one who is bothered by this?

kashmir file is half baked truth. and kerala story is total propaganda.
gandhi was stalwart to bring hinduism to its originality but communal RSS/ BJP took over his idea and presented gandhi as threat.
Gandhi always believed in humanism that can be traced to sanatan dharma as adi shankracharya said but RSS highjacked it to forward its political agenda.

The essential difference between inequalities in Hinduism and Abrahamic faiths is - as far reformations in Hinduism even non-hindu stray dogs can enter Univited and suggest and enforce reforms.
That is how the Hindu is also held on high pedestal. By Univited stray dogs.
