    How good is this car? well, i'm lucky enough to work in the automotive industry, and get paid to drive (fast)cars for a living , and yet, every time i drive my i3 (bought s/h) , i really, really enjoy it. For me it captures the spirit of the original Mini, a cheeky, ripper of a car. Not fast in the overall sense, but fast enough, and it feels special to drive every time! The fact it looks a bit noddy makes chopping people off the lights even more fun imo....... ;-)

      Couldn't agree more! I bought mine to get a 'practical' errands car alongside my 6-series convertible and to find out what living with an electric car would be like - but I've been blown away by how much FUN it is to drive! It's so fast, so light and yet so precise to position that it's a joy on every trip, while offering comfortable accommodation for four adults plus luggage.
      (Now if the top could just fold down I could dispense with the convertible altogether!) :-)

    This car is totally worth it! I had the 2017 i3 bev, just traded it in for a 2019 i3s bev. They have upgraded the battery yet again. Best EV in the market right now IMHO! I've test-driven Tesla two times, trying to convince myself to get either Model X or 3, but the interior of Tesla is lame, no quality at all. They charge high price for the tech I understand, just not my cup of tea. Very happy with my i3s, and I will continue to buy BMW EVs because they are that good!

    • @jefffaller8474

      I agree with you that Tesla isn't really trying that hard on their interior design, when they could if they wanted to AND you could make the argument that its definitely time. Specifically, from an interior design standpoint there's way too much white space, visually un-stimulating.

  • @liv2ska8

    The BMW i3 is an incredible car. Everything about this car is so original. The way it looks, the way it drives, the interior the comfort the floor space all the unique things this car has, there’s really not any other car like it in the auto industry today. Sandy Munro (famous car builder) said that that BMW i3 is the model T of our time. And if you pick up a used BMW i3 it really affordable. I purchased my 2017 i3 with the REX for Under $20,000 bucks. If you were on the fence about purchasing an i3, don’t hesitate! You won’t regret it, you’ll actually be glad that you got one

    Several times you repeated your error... it does NOT have carbon fiber reinforced body panels... it's just the structure around the entire passenger compartment that is CFRP... nothing else. Even the drive-train sits in a separate aluminum subframe.
    Now... is it worth it?
    Obviously that's open to personal opinion, but you will always pay a premium for premium content.
    If the i3 were made of any other material, it would be much heavier, and lose a LOT of the characteristics that make it desirable... quick on its feet, nimble, and ABLE to make those small tires WORK because of the light weight! If it were 600-700 pounds heavier, the battery range would not be acceptable... and it would be sluggish.
    It's a compound/cascade effect... (you probably know this, others might not)If you change one "little" thing, it snowballs. BMW engineered every piece of the car for light weight (aka kinetic energy), and because of this, the "requirement for strength" (to protect the occupants) is decreased... because of the light weight / low mass. So now, since it now >needs< less absolute strength, it can be made from lighter materials...
    As the car gets heavier due to the heavier materials, then the battery range gets too low, so you have to have a bigger (heavier!) battery pack. To hold that heavier battery pack, you have to make the structure of the car stronger. Now with all the extra chassis strength/weight (ie: if it were aluminum), and if the body panels were aluminum (also heavier, and more prone to damage), and with the bigger/heavier battery pack... the cars acceleration rate gets sluggish... so a bigger (heavier) electric motor is required. Now with all of the above, you can no longer ride on "narrow" tires that promote high efficiency... you need bigger tires... and wheels... and brakes... and on and on and on... get it yet?
    Acceleration (in cars) is all about two things: Weight (mass), and Power. If you have 107HP in a 3200 pound car, you get the slug called the Leaf... with each electric HP lugging around 30 pounds. In the 168HP i3 BEV at 2635 pounds, you have each horsepower carrying around nearly ONE HALF as much weight... only 15.6 pounds per HP!
    Do you want to go faster? Get rid of weight.
    The BMW i3 BEV is the most "fuel" efficient vehicle sold in the USA... since it began selling in 2014.
    Obviously we're still in the infancy of utilizing any form of Carbon Fiber as main structural components in mass-produced cars... it's a huge learning curve, and early adopters are always willing to pay the premium for the advantages.

      @aro9462 5 лет назад +2

      In terms of its body structure, the i3 is decades ahead of any other commodity vehicle currency on the road. I’m sad that BMW has decided to abandon any further pursuit of the i3/i8 CFRP body structure, and has in fact sold its controlling interest in the Moses Lake, WA plant from which it sourced the carbon fiber. Although BMW has decided not to offer battery upgrades in the U.S., I suspect that aftermarket vendors may eventually make this upgrade possible. I think the i3 will remain a well-kept secret for several years. Get one while they’re still cheap!

    I did buy my 2017 model used as a dealer demo, so NO it is not worth $59,000, $35,000 yes. So compare to Tesla Model 3 and your insurance is going to be so much less and you can get it repaired at a body shop, not a Tesla authorized repair location. Such a better option even with the less range.

  • @supraphonic88

    I know this isn't your thing, but although the i3's sticker is obscenely expensive, lease residuals are high, BMW's still eligible for all the state and federal tax incentives, and dealers are willing to shave thousands off. I've had a 2017 i3 BEV a little over a year now and I'm paying less than $300 a month to lease this, on a vehicle that originally stickered for $48K. My loan payments were over $50 a month higher on my old Focus ST that stickered for $25K. While technology marches on much faster with EVs, I'm giving thought to turning this one back in, letting the market determine the value instead of the lease paperwork, and picking it back up again.

    It's now September 2020, and a few weeks ago, a friend let me drive her new used 2014 i3. If I remember correctly, it only had about 70,000 KM on it, and it drove like a new car right out of the showroom.
    I'm retired now, but worked in car dealerships all my life, and had lots of rides in really nice cars. I thought when I drove this one "This is the nicest car I've ever driven." Not because it's the nicest electric, not because it's the nicest German car, just the nicest.
    It's on my want next for when I win the lottery. That is what it will take, I'm afraid.

    Completely agree... love the car, I lease one... the economics work due to write off for business use. Plan to buy one used after lease is up. The new sales price needs to come down 10k.. I also think the battery needs to get bumped up to 200 mi range, allow the full 2.4GA to get 115 mi of range out of the back up gen, wider wheels and tires, and reduce wheel size from 20 to 18 and then you have a sweet car that I would choose over a model 3

    I have the all electric version, I'm not crazy about the s-version. It seems useless. It is worth the $50k when you consider what it can do and what you save -- eliminating the extra expense over the lifetime of the car. Small things on the Tesla go wrong and service (to fix them) varies and the cost is constant.
    It seems that people are judging the i3 through the eyes of gasholes instead of seeing the overall benefit that gas cars can't deliver. The i3 should be judged based on objectives -- what's the objective of having a car? Travel. The i3 delivers like no gas car plus delivers the added benefits (e.g., greatly reduced harm to the overall environment, greatly reduced cost to operate, comparable commuter travel, etc.). The i3 is the modern model T, not the Tesla.

    And $59k (or even $51k) is way to much. And BMW knows it. Yes, there’s a $7,500 federal tax credit. Yes, there are credits and rebates all over that can drop it another $10k. That’s still overpriced.
    Which is why nobody buys them outright. They lease them.
    Then people buy the lease returns for 50% or less. (As I did earlier this Summer. Bought a fully loaded 2015 with every single option, and only 10,000 miles, for under $24k, with 18 months left on the factory warranty plus a generous BMW Certified Preowned warranty.)

    For almost 60 grand, no thanks, I'd rather wait for the BMW i4, but used! Heck yeah! I'm really looking in to getting a used 2017 REX version for around 18-25K. Yes, it may not be the "prettiest" car but it looks pretty futuristic and I like that, it stands out a little more than most cars on the road. And being Electric! I'm sick of smog checks, spark plug changes, oil changes (though yes I know the REX model may need one every few years if that), and all these combustion engine issues that need to be fixed when they get older which I've been dealing with a lot lately. It's a lot cheaper with the cost of Electricity compared to gas which is great and so much less in maintenance. But I feel like since I've only used gas cars, moving in to the electric scene with a "hybrid" (term used lightly) this is a great step. Still, eventually really wanting the BMW i4 though.

    I just ordered the i3s without the motorcycle engine range extender, £38,000
    Eq, $49,500 including Park sensors and Camera. They didn't charge me for the blue seat belts lol.

      Radial engines leak oil when they are parked. A very normal thing. As such, the prudent thing to do is to clip on those little buckets to catch the oil.

    I have a 2015 i3 REX, never again will buy a BMW. Had a Leaf before this and it was a much better car. Don't get me wrong, this is a good car that was not done right. You go through a regular road and you feel every granular bump that there is. The wheels are prone to damage because of the surface area, I went on top of a sneaky pothole, tires got all busted. Stood at the side of the road watch other people drive by with their regular car, nothing happened.

    I have liked it from the begining, not 100%, but somewhere close, this model (ReX EV), the interior layout its ok, but the back of your seat moves a lot, i would put the B pillar back and make a nice clean window line from the side of the car and at least the back tires to be wider, to look more sporty, i am from Romania and i have not touched, but i like what i see...

    Based on what Munro & Assoc has to say about the teardown cost. BMW could sell this car $35,000 and make a good profit. $60K is ludicrous. For $60k I could get the performance model Tesla Model 3 and get all my monies worth. Not paying $60k for an all-electric eccentric looking hot hatch that can only be driven locally without range anxiety. It doesn't make any sense. Once again BMW is counting on their brand reputation to sell this car. I would rather spend that money on hybrid 3 series and drive around all electric for 30 miles or less a day and never pay for gas until I go long distance. Just saying...

    • @l0k
      @l0k 6 лет назад

      Probably that's why they can offer the "utility" $10,000 price drop and not bat an eye. I got the regular version and with discounts it dropped it under 40k for a decently equipped model. I'm not sure there's anyone who really pays $60k for these.

  • @loungelizard836

    It’s a nice toy but at that price I need a proper car. Used I would want to pay less than £18,000 ($23100) for the Rex. I had one for a weekend, I loved it, the wife hated it’s looks and recycled egg box door panels. Really needs back windows to wind down and sort out the fixed headrest, maybe a single colour instead of the ‘look at me’ colours

    I haven't looked into the recent batch of these, but these have tended to lease well... like sub $200 lease with zero down. The residuals on these are horrible, so buying a used one is dirt cheap, cheaper than buying a used Volt (sub 20K is very easy to find). It ain't pretty but as a commuter or task vehicle, it makes sense and could save you a lot of money. I used to vomit inside my mouth every time I saw one, but after doing some number crunching I put it on my list of "practical" cars that I can use for general tasks, rather than putting Christmas trees in the passenger seat of my convertible.

    Polymer Panels? So it's an electric "Saturn". How is the internal fit and finish. How do these cars perform at protracted" idle " or stuck in stop and go traffic. I spend so much of my commute , stuck and sucking gas. I got 11mpg from my V8 yesterday. So, I need a work alternative. But, I'm not quite convinced. Wait, you have a friend who still says Dude?

    • @ckgrier2
      @ckgrier2 6 лет назад +1

      B Bee in stop and go traffic, the i3 will be great, as it cools/heats the car from the battery, without generating exhaust for all the cars nearby to breath. And it regenerates electricity when you lift off the accelerator.
      With "coding" and an accessory box it can also drive itself at low speeds on the freeway.

    • @EMichaelBall
      @EMichaelBall 6 лет назад +1

      If you own only one car, currently, then once insurance is factored in, it's probably cheaper to keep what you have, and not get a second car. However, if your life requires two cars, it may be better to trade one car in for an EV. An EV will be very quiet and efficient in stop-and-go traffic, with AC or heating operation being the real energy hog compared to actually driving. If you live in a state where used Chevy Spark EVs are available (most likely CA, OR, and MD), or are willing to buy the car online and sight unseen, then these cars, while they have less range and luxury, and are FWD, have some pretty interesting driving dynamics of their own (and come with staggered tires like an i3), and can be picked up for about half the price of used i3's. I'll link to some reviews of various lengths, so you can pick the ones that most interest you re: time.

    At MSRP, it's definitely overpriced, but anyone paying anywhere near MSRP is getting ripped off. BMW was recently putting $10k on the hood through various utilities across the nation and the corporate buyer program, and that's in addition to any dealer discounts. Then add the other various incentives and someone could realistically get at least $17,500 off MSRP nationally and close to $25k in some localities. Also, just ditch the range extender and save a couple grand there, it's rarely needed with the continued expansion of the fast charger network and the access card for free sessions at those chargers. Plus, it's practically useless when in use, at least at freeway speeds.

  • @jasonparry7173

    I loved my i3. But nowadays they should pull $10 grand out of the price. Then you get $7500 federal tax credit and you are at $40,000 loaded. And/OR drop the rex and fill it with battery for 200 range since batteries are denser now

    • @ckgrier2
      @ckgrier2 6 лет назад +1

      Jason Parry I have used REx to get to my destination when charging was not an option. Putting a few batteries in that space wouldn't have helped I think you overestimate how much room it takes for the 650cc engine.

    Dear BMW, how to fix the i3. Add a foot and a half in length, double the range, make the rear suicide doors work independently from the front doors, get rid of that ridiculously small speedo with a HUD system, make the main screen larger and give it AWD and real tires.... and ditch the 2 tone paint job!! man that's soooooo 1980s
    In the end, even for a BMW, this is massively over priced and has a useless range compared to much cheaper alternatives. Where I'm from, Ontario Canada, they just killed the 14k dollar EV rebate so this is dead in the water.

    $59K you could buy a Tesla model 3 (long range ) with 3 x the electric range of the BMW i3 and much more space and a better ride. Or you you could save $16K-$20K and buy a fully loaded Chevy BOLT EV. NO REASON to buy the i3 new.....

    • @MrPompousPilot
      @MrPompousPilot 6 лет назад +1

      IF you have the time to wait for one. As for the Bolt. I looked at one and even with the extended range, where we live doesn't help all that much because the charging infrastructure is poor. In addition, As a BMW owner, we charge for FREE at the few DC chargers that are available. I suppose that's three reasons to consider one. Moreover, if you get a cpo i3, you pay about HALF of what a bolt costs.
