Here Hamlet begins to understand the enormous pain he has caused Laertes and the damage he has caused to those around him. He remarks that he begins to see in Laertes a portraiture of his own cause. If you believe that Hamlet got Ophelia pregnant, he looks even more guilty. Hamlet has no adequate way to redress the wrongs he has done to Laertes and his family. He says he will court Laertes, even though it would be impossible for Laertes to forgive him, in spite of that. Hamlet senses his own death looming because he realizes he has hurt too many people too badly to be forgiven.
I was 40 when I got to play the Dane, and had before and many since seen a variety of interpretations. I always marvel at British technique, I've rarely been truly moved, though, by the men. (The women, another story) American actors, even if a bit sloppy, have plenty of heart. Mr. Tennant is wonderful, but I found it odd - in that I am gay, and seen several gay actors essay the role) that he seemed most likely to have possibly been gay, as the character. Almost everyone comments on what a fine figure of a Prince he cuts, and he seemed...odd...here. To me, anyway...Gertrude was splendid. I enjoyed the small roles most, for those actors were dynamic and rapidly moving forward. I was surprised by so much breaking of the lines. Maybe it's 'modern' now. It was enjoyable, but not pulsing. All Shakespeare 'pulses', As Gielgud said, after playing it around 5 different times: 'You never get it. Not all of it. It's huge mountains with very few valleys.' Not impossible, like Lear... Shall see what the next one brings.
This was si beautifully written. And I agree - I like Gertrude best in this. I really do enjoy the development of the smaller roles. I also feel that Hamlet needs to be a little bit gay. Not sure why though..... 😂
Hamlet: Here, thou incestuous, murderous, damned Dane. Drink off this potion!
Claudius:...f**k it.
