    Its on purpose, the pre order digital deluxe edition where you can play games 3 days earlier and have an included season pass is a dead give away that they want to condition people for a all digital future with no ownership. I personally am stocking on my retro games..

    What happens if your console gets corrupted with a virus, then you lose everything you have bought? There must be scenarios like this or your account getting hacked and losing years lf progress. What are the safety procedures in place?

    • @SenorDonut.
      @SenorDonut.  Месяц назад

      Viruses aren't a thing on consoles, closest thing are cyber attacks; where they'll take down the online capabilities.
      If you lose access to your account, you've got a chance to get it back.

    Do updates, patches, DLC and partial or full game file downloads for physical games count as "digital purchases" to the platform holders? I am on team physical. preferably I like to buy games that are functional and complete on disk/cart which keep to becoming rarer and rare each year.

    • @SenorDonut.

      That's a good point, I've had day 1 patches that were bigger than the games content on the disc!
      Definitely a rarity these games, I can't remember buying any games recently; that didn't prompt a day 1 update/patch.

      I think its partly a psychological kind of thing and its used to keep more control of the game license for the publisher.
      1. It prevents consumers from having stable working games for offline play.
      2. It ties the game to a server so over time the physical game will be a useless piece of plastic once the servers get shut off.
      3. It encourages people to sign up to online services.
      4. It also encourages people to just go with the digital copy. They are making physical game more unappealing.
      5. It is killing off the secondhand market.
      The platform holders Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo and publishers have been doing it gradually year after year since the 7th generation of consoles. Conditioning us for a all digital future.
      Someordinarygamers made an amazing video a year ago about Microsoft's shady tactics. Sony and Nintendo aren't exactly innocent either and are following suit along with the third party publishers.

      @@auswolf9507 I 100% agree with you, that corps are trying to kill off / alleviate physical sales. This can be proven by digital sales being in-line with physical prices, and sales (black friday included), digital copies being cheaper than physical copies,
      Previously digital sales were more expensive, to entice consumers to go to stores and pickup physical copies, and ensure that brick stores were making a profit.
      The price discrepancy / margins have got so tight, that stores have decided to stop stocking new games,

    Ultimately the thing that bugs me the most about going all digital is options
    We can debate physical vs digital all day but in the end I just want options and when consoles go fully all digital is when we are stuck at the mercy of console storefronts dictating all prices on their platforms and well I'll stick to PC then cause at least there are options to buy games digitally on different storefronts

    This might be a hot take but I just think the idea of ownership can be overrated. Sure - you can own a collection of physical copies for as long as you want, but chances are a lot of those will only get played once, and then they’ll just be piles of plastic gathering dust. We don’t own live music, bowling alleys or the cinema - and yet we still get value out of the experience - this is not much different in my eyes.
    While digital isn’t strictly ownership - the way I see it, if the game is saved to my console then I own it. I also think the odds of losing digital purchases either now or in the future are extremely slim - depending on the platform. That said, if this did happen in say - 20 years - there will always be something new, plus 20 years of games releasing between now and then to fill that void, and most likely ways to recover those games by other means. In 20 years I’ll be 50, and will have likely moved onto the next thing in my life with little time or care to backtrack on nostalgia (aside from maybe a few things, but my time is and always will be finite) - so this, I don’t really see as an issue.
    Basically that’s why I’ve no problem with going digital - but I also enjoy a minimalistic and clutter free house (the trade off is a no brainer), and there’s something cool about having a game ready to play without requiring a disc change.

    • @SenorDonut.
      @SenorDonut.  Месяц назад +1

      Hey Tom!
      That is true bro, but even if they are played just the once; there still accessible at any time. But saying that, I've got a million games that I've never played!
      I'd be happy with digital gaming in the future, if there was always a way to play the game; without the need for an internet connection tbh.
      Yeh digital has it's benefits for sure. Thanks for checking the vid, and taking time to comment mate. Appreciate you!

    • @tomparkin2068
      @tomparkin2068 Месяц назад +1

      @ yeah without a doubt - there’s definitely a trade off with having physical copies and the option to revisit them infinitely Vs a digital licence but no clutter.
      For me I’d rather have the space. Admittedly, it is technically a gamble as you’re putting some faith into the companies, servers and even your own console - but I personally see the risk as incredibly low.
      To be honest there are pros and cons to both sides of the argument - but nothing lasts forever so I’ll happily opt for convenience above anything. (Exceptions for anything OOP which has been delisted - I’ll happily grab a secondhand copy from eBay if I really have to)
      And you’re welcome! It’s an interesting topic.

    • @GhostlierCube
      @GhostlierCube Месяц назад +1

      Terrible argument, The digital games are not saved to your console, the games are saved to your account, which is tied to PlayStation & Xbox's servers, anything can happen to your account, it gets hacked, banned or you forgot your password, and all those digital games are gone and you have to rebuy all of them, and even then there's no guarantee that all of those games will even still be available on the stores to purchase again, just because it hasn't happened YET doesn't mean it CAN'T happen, Also an all digital gaming world means they can control & monitor how long we play these games for.

    • @tomparkin2068
      @tomparkin2068 Месяц назад +1

      @@GhostlierCube The odds of losing your account are so incredibly slim - you could just as easily lose physical copies to a fire or by theft - what if they’re no longer in print? The argument goes both ways. Hypothetically if you take your console offline and it’s set as your home console then you’re good, but yes I see where you’re coming from.
      I’ve had PT on my PS4 for a decade, I understand that it would disappear forever with my console - but it’s still going. I’ve taken the console offline now so the game is mine so as long as the console lasts (I can even back it up if I choose, but that’s besides the point) - it can’t be taken from me by hackers or Sony. If it was a physical copy this would translate to how long before the disc degraded, destroyed, lost or was stolen - when you see it this way it’s all just a matter of semantics.
      I’m not losing sleep over anything either way - if something does happen to my digital purchases, then shit happens - chances are I can repurchase most of them or I’ll have moved on with my life. I’ve got stuff on, video games don’t rule my life and nothing lasts forever (I also have libraries on other platforms). So no, I’d say it’s a compelling argument.

    • @GhostlierCube
      @GhostlierCube Месяц назад

      @@tomparkin2068 Lmao you think you have control over how long you can keep your account? You're keeping your account based on the mercy of Microsoft & Sony and based on the mercy of hackers, it doesn't matter if it's a slim chance, it could still happen, I know a friend that lost his account because he shared his with other people, Fire & Theft Is not really a good analogy because YOU are the one responsible for those things, just because you personally won't play these games 20 years from now, doesn't mean everyone else won't, people spend their money on these games, the only reason your game is still going on your PS4 is because of the mercy of Sony, with disc you have it forever without worrying about anyone coming to your house and taking it, if the disc gets damaged then there's machines out there that can repair it, also you would have to be REALLY careless with your stuff for them to break lol.

    I agree with most of the things you say but i personally think buying the disk and owning the game is just a plus, somehow I don't feel safe hooking up my debit/credit card with console its always been this way since my ps2 era and as well as my ps4, keeping collection is my things you could always just sell it when need to be exchanged or get the new game a bit chipper here in Pakistan well thats just how i feel and mostly paksitani feels the same way even tho they come in a minority because a lot of people can't afford consoles here in my country

    I don’t understand, why would you want to take away such a valuable privilege from your players?
    They only need to buy it once and it’s theirs forever, same goes for digital, but what’s the fun in that? Plus they could just straight up take it away if you’re using something like game pass.
    Iv missed going out to actually buy a game, but they’ve (Xbox) made the digital version way more affordable.
    Gaming today feels more like only rich people can buy them. And how much they are making these games is at a god awful price. 60,70, dollars! Back then they were like 30 or 20 dollars.
