Good evening! And welcome to this walk around the heart of Stratford-upon-Avon, the world-famous home of William Shakespeare. Under the sun on a winter's afternoon, we'll take in many of the sights that tell the life story of the Bard, a man whose legacy has come to dominate this historic Warwickshire town.
But as we mention on our tour, Stratford was a place of settlement long before Shakespeare's birth in 1564. In fact, while the modern town was founded by the Saxons back in the 7th century, Stratford actually takes its name from the Romans' presence in the area. 'Stratford' literally means 'street ford', which refers to a historic ford of the River Avon at the end of what is today Bridge Street, and now the site of the grand Clopton Bridge.

Having been to Stratford I was disappointed to learn that most of the buildings were reproductions and not at all original

the bard himself never lived in Stratford. The Earl of Oxford was "Shakespeare". William Shakspere of Stratford was just a third rate actor. But it makes for great tourist videos.
