    Great video as always. A similar method that I have used is to make the objects a component, copy that over, scale up the copy and then apply the follow me to the larger component. This then generates the correct shape on the smaller component as well, and then I delete the larger copy.

      YES - they call that the Dave method on the SketchUp forums - it's really smart - I just for some reason find this quicker, so I do it this way, but that way is perfectly valid and possibly even a bit better - thanks! :)

    Thank you so much for posting this! I was making something very small and I kept getting errors for an unknown reason. For the life of me I couldn't understand why. I stumbled across this video (amongst others of yours) and lo and behold your solution fixed the problem!

    I have a question. I'm working on collaboration with two different mediums. In blender a friend of mind created a complex object. I've imported the stl into sketchup and ensured it's a solid group by fixing any issues. When I merged the complex item with a simple square base extrusion - holes in the geometry showed up in the most awkward of places. Your videos have helped me, imo, become well versed in sketchup. I appreciate your help. IMO Sketchup doesn't get the love and recognition it deserves for 'cad' type modeling.

    Your videos really helps me fixing the model in sketchup. Can you please make a video on how to make brick jalies. I am an architectural student and I want to make jalies and i am so confused on how we could color it such a way it looks like jalies.

    • @DarkMoonDroid
      @DarkMoonDroid 4 года назад

      Are you wanting a "material" that you can apply to a surface that will actually have the cuts in it? Or are you wanting to make the bricks?
      I've made bricks for a patio screen that had the usual pattern of cuts, but it slanted off at a 45 degree angle so you can't see directly in front of you. It blocked the direct view & gave an indirect view while preserving air-flow. I just built it by hand, one curve at a time, applied a cement or sandstone texture to it and made it a component and built a gorgeous patio wall with them.

      I just did some experimenting and found another way!
      I made a flat, 2-D drawing of this block here:
      ezhilgreenhomes.com/brick-jali/
      Then where it is supposed to be hollow, I used the color white and edited the color and make it completely transparent.
      I used sand for the texture and scaled it down pretty tight.
      Then I softened all the edges - so no black lines.
      Then I made it a component and multiplied it.
      I don't know how to make it a texture. Maybe there's a tutorial for that...

    Hi I made a cylinder and embossed a logo on the surface, I designed it at 1000% then scaled it down, parts of the edge of the letters disappeared when smaller, at 1000% it was perfect, any ideas?

    I do exactly this, except if I'm working on intricate and small, I do everything in 10x scale, or even 100x if it's really, really detailed. It eliminates issues 'too many segments for the curve' and, or course, geometry problems.
    I'm pretty sure it's due to how Sketchup handles arithmetic. Since Sketchup was originally designed to model architecture, the precision of its arithmetic is probably too limited for very small objects. Of course, I'm not a programmer, so I very well could be talking out of my a**, and I assume also that there's a good reason for not implementing such fine precision in this particular software.

    Hey Justin, hope you’re well. You reversed faces at one point. Something I never looked up as to why one would do that other than for a face to look the same as surrounding faces. Does it go deeper than that, I.e. does it affect how the model will behave during a particular function, add- on manipulation etc.,etc.. Thanks for any explanation as to why and when I should reverse faces.

      TheSketchUpEssentials : thanks Justin, good video. Now one thing you didn’t touch on was how or why does it happen, I know I could try this but I’m not at my computer but sitting at the docs office.... I’m assuming by drawing in a specific order/ direction causes a reversed face. I.e., correct me if I’m wrong. If I’m drawing a rectangle using the line/ pencil tool and draw four lines clockwise, do I get a correct or reversed face? Same question if I were to draw counter clockwise? If using say the rectangle tool, pulling corners in a particular direction, top left to bottom right apposed to bottom right to upper left. Would the resulting faces be the same or different? Thanks and I will try this theory of mine ASAP

    • @douglasmichel6361

      I would think if you increase number of segments in the arc you would ( in the case of the dome for example) get closer and closer to closing up the geometry. I’ll have to try to confirm, but to me it make sense based on your reply. 👍

      It's just a limitation in the minimum size and segment count SketchUp can create in small objects

    • @Svanevej7
      @Svanevej7 4 года назад +1

      Sketchup will not draw edges shorter than 0.001". Scaling down from a larger size is a way of working around this limitation. The explanation from the Sketchup team can be found in the following post: sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=25175&p=218997#p218989

    As straighforward as "fixes" like these are (thank you, btw), it's a damn shame SketchUp is just so chock full o' "gotchas" that tend to discourage new users. Took me 4-5 attempts over 16 years to really feel comfortable, and I *still* hear myself groaning every time something "screws up". If only the darn program worked in true WYSIWYG fashion!! (It's 2020!!!)
