By popular demand I am currently looking into a way to restore the original artwork to the best of my ability. I'm also looking into replacing or custom fabricating the missing tensioner spring and bobbin nut. STAY TUNED/SUBSCRIBE FOR PART 2! I will get it all finished as soon as I possibly can
I watch Marty's matchbox restorations and he creates decals on a computer. This might be the way you can put on the artwork that was lost. Love this little sewing machine:)
YAY! So pleased you are looking into doing the design. It is absolutely stunning. You will need a very fine paint brush, if you can't get one fine enough, take a razor blade and give a small brush a hair cut! Also, I suggest that you trace off the design onto paper first and have a practice paint. OR, if you know a child who loves to colour in, and stays inside the lines, get them to paint a tracing on paper for you. You may find a budding artist to help you! God bless, and good luck.
Restoration Station. I notice that you have several queries about how a sewing machine can work with only one thread. You may like to direct them to "How it works chain stitch sewing machines." They have an animated illustration that's excellent. I'm sure you also realise you need a small G clamp to secure the machine to the table too. One last word from me. All chain link machines have one oddity. The last stitch you sew is left with an unsecured loop. Any tension put on the thread as you remove it from under the foot, and you will watch all of your sewing unravel before your eyes !!! Solution: Hold onto the stitches as you remove sewing from the machine. Take a sewing needle and pass the thread through the material, catch the unsecured stitch and then knot it to the material. Do the same at the start. I know that you have inspired a number of people to try restoring old, unwanted things themselves. Ever thought of starting a Q&A session to help others? All the best.
Elle est trop chou cette petite machine, jolie restoration j'adore, merci d'avoir pris le temps pour cette petite grand-mère de la couture . Nathalie 🥰👍👍👍France Normandie.
This brought back memories, I had one of these as a child. I remember it being on a heavy wooden plinth which gave it some stability. Great job of restoring it.
That was definitely a sweet little toy to restore and except for the loss of the art work I think it was a total success. Thanks for sharing this video with me and I hope you will put out more soon.
If you ever can, please have the paintwork re-done by hand as it was originally, not decals. Many artisans still have the skill. Let them amaze us ❤ It deserves it. Beautiful work 💕
I agree, it would have been easy to trace off the pattern before sand blasting it. Replacing it would have been as easy as colouring in a picture book. You don't need to be an artist, you just need a steady hand. It might be possible to make a template from footage he filmed though.
@@suemiller9842 Totally Sue. To me the paintwork was as important as any other element, if not more so. It had the true history of the object within it... keeping a record is more important than making something shine.🧡
If you plan to paint the design onto the machine, you should find that the front and back are mirror images of each other, so where parts of the pattern are missing on one side, you may find them on the other side. The base plate also appeared to have a design on it, but I couldn't see to much of it. you may need to take elements of the side panel design to create a new one. Hope this helps.
What an awesome video! I’m so amazed and pleased that you took the time to sew a piece of material with it at the end. it really topped things off wonderfully.
Restoration Station: We have found photos of pristine art work for this machine on line. The picture can be printed, and the design traced onto the machine. Then all you need is a steady hand and some acrylic craft paint, and the machine will look like new. We have posted the web site name under Deena's comment. Also note that the cotton tensioner is missing on your machine. It is a spring and a nut, and allows you to tighten the thread so that that it will make a proper chain stitch. As you did not show us the piece of sewing completed, my guess would be that the stitches were not properly looped. Hope you do the painting, let us see pictures if you do. Keep up the good work, can't wait for your next project.
I had a Singer hand crank chain stitch sewing machine as a child, 1955-1960. My dad C-clamped it to a linoleum kitchen table. I made clothes for dollies and just loved to pull out the chain too.
Beautiful! And just as functional as the day it was made. It's a shame they have to make everything now so complicated, even sewing machines have on board computers now. Bet THEY won't still be working like new in a hundred years, with just a simple straightening, de-rusting, repainting, and reoiling. Great job!
I'm just going to polish up the Chrome it hasn't gotten here yet I'm going to leave the painting on it as much as I can original but thank you for doing this video it's greatly appreciated I plan on taking very good care of it
That sewing machine is boss. Imagine a kit where parents and kids could work together to build that toy from its constituent parts. That would be awesome!
If you got photos(or screen grabs from video) of the decoration, then import into photo shop and clean them up and make your own decals. Just a suggestion. Excellent work again as usual. Imagine having to build a hot air balloon or a parachute with that sewing machine, lol
I thought of that too Jonner,, but screen or photo imaging does not always show the artisans work,, so I agree with Deena,, find a pro and let them paint it back on... ; ) I did do this with a COMIC though,, I have spiderman #1 with no cover, and a person made it from photoshop and cad ,, great idea
Not quite. Real sewing machines have a second thread under the work piece that is entangled with the thread coming from the top. I don't really know how this one works.
I wonder how old it was? What a great toy. Wonderful restoration. Maybe you can find someone who could paint the decoration back on? Would be nice for a part II . -Loyal follower
Орнамент/рисунок не восстановлен.Деревянная ручка держится на "честном слове", Вы заметили, как плохо была расклёпана шпилька? Не качественное удаление ржавчины и малярные работы Вас так сильно восхищают?
Beautiful job and it was wonderful to see it sew through leather of all things. Just a detail but you forgot the little red felt disc that you rest the thread on.
onewordwoman ! Hi, Yes it does sew properly. It makes a chain stitch. The needle goes through the material and makes a loop underneath. The needle then comes back up, leaving the loop behind. The needle moves the material forward and punches the next hole in the fabric. This hole is in the middle of the loop made by the previous stich, and a new loop is made. As each new loop is inside the previous loop, a row of chain stitches is formed. To end off the sewing, you must do a bit of hand sewing to stop the loops coming loose. Hope this helps.
Very instructive video, it's a pleasure to watch and learn! Would you tell me what kind of needle you put in the machine? Mine looks like yours and needs a new needle (the one that came with the machine is warped). Thanks for your help and congrats on you excellent restoration!
I just got a Besty Ross Toy sewing machine from original owner who kept good care of it only thing is the hand crank is tough it is ok in two areas of turning but mid way in a turn it gets stuck where you cant get a smooth crank do you know what could be the problem? I have oiled it good and still the crank isn't working right?
Wishing now that I had kept my grandmothers treadle sewing machine. It was seized up and no amount of oil would get it going again. My mom did everything that she said my grandmother would have done to get it broken loose, and my mom too the plates off like she said she would ave to do when the seizing up would happen when she was a teenager and making her own clothes. She could not detect where the problem was, nor could I, so it when to the landfill. Dang that thing was heavy. Case iron all the way. It was a nice machine. Machine would lower down into the base and a leaf folded up and over. And there was a 2 drawer cabinet on the right side. I still have some of the attachments (don't know why, I just do) as well as a wooden "tube" of needles ....... very long needles ..... longer than any I see in the fabric stores for today's machines. Live and learn. To back we can't turn back the clock, cuz I really wanted to try a sewing project on "my grandma's treadle sewing machine".
