  • Dr Rod Tayler is an Australian anaesthetist with an interest in low carb nutrition. He is the founder of Low Carb Down Under which hosts a range of resources to assist people to optimise their health and weight.
    Robert H. Lustig, M.D., M.S.L. is Professor emeritus of Pediatrics, Division of Endocrinology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He specialises in the field of neuroendocrinology, with an emphasis on the regulation of energy balance by the central nervous system. His research and clinical practice has focused on childhood obesity and diabetes. Dr. Lustig holds a Bachelor’s in Science from MIT, a Doctorate in Medicine from Cornell University. Medical College, and a Master’s of Studies in Law from U.C. Hastings College of the Law.
    Dr. Lustig has fostered a global discussion of metabolic health and nutrition, exposing some of the leading myths that underlie the current pandemic of diet-related disease. He believes the food business, by pushing processed food loaded with sugar, has hacked our bodies and minds to pursue pleasure instead of happiness; fostering today’s epidemics of addiction and depression. Yet by focusing on real food, we can beat the odds against sugar, processed food, obesity, and disease.

    I remember back in 2009 when I was looking to lose weight after so many failed attempts. I thought to myself, it cant possibly be this hard, what am I missing?(and no I wasnt doing it on my own, I consulted doctors, nutritionists, certified fitness people, etc, and couldnt do it, got fatter everytime and failed over and over, think about the psychological damage that does to you). I then saw sugar the bitter truth by robert lustig, and it got me into the rabbit hole and mess that is nutrition science. but thanks to him, and then some people like gary taubes, and consequently other low carb people, managed to be lean for the first time in my life thanks to following their advice. Yes calories do matter for losing weight, but theres something else we are missing, avoiding sugar , refined carbohydrates and mostly focusing on real foods while not vilifying fat. by doing that, it made the process of losing weight enjoyable and effortless. thanks to guys like robert lustig I wouldnt be able to be here today enjoying good health, and would probably have been twice as obese as I were back then,following blindly my nutrionist outdated recommendations. god bless robert lustig and everyone in the low carb movement.

    This information made a major change in my life. Before I discovered it, I was hungry all the time, tired, never got enough sleep, my joints hurt, and I was gaining weight at an alarming rate. My Doctor told me I had Insulin Resistance (Pre-Diabetic Type 2) and may soon have to be treated for it. Once I discovered the problem, I made MAJOR changes to my diet, used Intermittent Fasting, and after 5 months I've lost 53 pounds so far. It used to hurt walking, but today I walked 5 miles and no problem. I haven't had the blood test yet, but I'm sure that the Insulin Resistance is gone.

    The real question
    If fiber is good because of butyric acid, which is generated and poorly absorbed in your large intestine, it seems it would only feed the bacteria and your intestinal lumen
    If you get into ketosis, you make beta hydroxybutyrate, delivering to your entire body.
    Wouldn't this be superior?

    • @dimitrispanagiotakopoulos5768
      @dimitrispanagiotakopoulos5768 4 года назад +2

      Sanguine butyric acid generated in the colon is a trophic factor for the intestinal cells but can also be absorbed. In short bowel syndrome patients with a retained colon the calories generated by MCFA and absorbed are around 300kCal/d. So fiver is good for these reasons. Taking exogenous fats is ok as long as you don’t combine them with carbs I suppose.

    • @Unsensitive
      @Unsensitive 4 года назад +2

      @@dimitrispanagiotakopoulos5768 seems i was incorrect on poor absorbtion.
      Looks like 95% generated is absorbed, but notes it's undetectable in the portal vein due to it's rapid use.
      academic.oup.com/femsle/article/217/2/133/501025
      But then why can you get high blood levels to all your body, such as from ketosis, and not from fiber fermentation?
      Is it the amount generated?
      The form it's generated in? BHB vs butyric acid
      Or both?
      In either case it seems the benefits from fiber butyric acid is still mostly limited to the gut. Where as there are high whole body levels from fat metabolism.
      Though I did find this, so some systemic distribution occurs from the distal colon from fiber/resistant starches, bypassing the liver which would use up any remaining otherwise.
      www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4903954/
      Would seem the best route, till the question is answered, is low carb & fasting to promote ketosis. The carbs you do consume, try to make sure they are fiber and resistant starches. But would you potentially be better without even the resistant carbs in the first place, or are they simply unnecessary if sufficient fat metabolism from ketosis? Maybe depends on the individual, but still haven't found a good source to answer this conclusively.

    I appreciate the message and agree that refined sugars as well as hyper palatable foods are dangerous but this discussion provides a dangerous over generalization. If you start your life out eating a "balance" of real food OK. But to dismiss the need for proper macro distribution completely neglects the state of the modern world. Eating a ton of fruit and potatoes then some steak would not be healthy for example. I think a lot of people could feel encouraged to do exactly that when they hear 'eat whatever so long as it's a real food'.

    I thought if you're insulin resistant then that means you produce high levels of insulin, and these constant high levels of insulin makes your insulin resistance stronger, leading to even higher levels of insulin resistance. So don't understand why dr. Ludwig said some of the normal adults had an insulin resistance problem, not an insulin release problem..

    @14:00 There are people who should not be vegan, though. It's possible to have genetic mutations that make it so they cannot convert precursors from plants into the micronutrient the body needs. For instance, beta carotene -> Retinol. Retinol is what the body needs. Beta carotene is just a pigment that most people can convert into retinol. Some can't. The best source for retinol is organ meats or shell fish, by far.

They have been threatening me with neglect and want to tube feed her.
    They claim she needs to up her carbohydrates intake by 150% despite the fact I’ve told the, she has increased respiratory symptoms, becomes irritable, demotivated and her cognitive function also declines.

    5:00 sorry but I don't agree with this, it's not that simple... We could say that old folk were addicted to drinking, addicted to prostitution, addicted to get into fights on the street, addicted to wife beating etc etc. Hell, we could say that there are grown men addicted to "wearing shorts and playing ball games", men addicted to sports. It's not simply internet or technology. In the old days it was radio. Yes, the dopamine reward system is something that can become dangerous, but it always existed, it's not new. Same misconception with the "hook up culture", it exists since cars were invented because it was the first time couples could have intimate time away from their parents, it's not something that the internet created, it always existed.

    2-4 teaspoons is much of sugar , considering that :As far as the brain and body are concerned 2/3 of the fuel can be ketones from fat, and 1/3 will be glucose.
    And this 1/3 of glucose comes from GLUCONEOGENESIS, where the body can make its own glucose. And where does it get it from? From:
    GLYCEROL which is the part of the FAT break down- 20g of glucose per day,
    KETONES- 10 g of glucose per day - part of FAT break down,
    RECYCLED LACTATE- like 40 g of glucose a day!!!,
    ORGANS can generate up to 80g of glucose,
    ALANINE - which is an amino acid from the muscle that can give you 15 g of glucose per day.
    Only after 30 hr of fasting, you will completely deplete your GLYCOGEN which is a stored sugar in your LIVER.
    Brain loves KETONES and so feeding your kids with chocolate before exams thinking that otherwise, the brain will not perform is wrong. That extra sugars from the diet are toxic to the cells. 2g of sugar is what the body needs per day, and it is metabolized from FATS. So , sugar is non-essential , when fats and amino-acids are !

    Omega 6 is essential, because the human body can't make it, and a certain amount of inflammation is essential for healing. Too much of anything is no good, including Omega 3.

    • @ekondigg6751
      @ekondigg6751 4 года назад +5

      Robin Lillian Yes, omega 6 and omega 3 are both essential. Inflammation is important in healing - when there is a problem. But if there's inflammation only due to an imbalance of omega 6 and omega 3, that's not good. The problem currently is that, in following current nutritional advice to avoid sat fat and use seed oils, the average Westerner consumes around 25:1 omega 6 to omega 3. They both "compete" with each other in uptake in the body, so omega 3 uptake is overwhelmed by omega 6 uptake when consuming such a high omega 6 to omega 3 ratio. Ideally, we should be aiming for a 1:1 or 2:1 ratio (omega 6:omega 3), although the literature suggests up to 4:1 is still ok. But 25:1 is definitely not ok.
