I had very severe osteoporosis. 14 spinal fractures during 2010-12, aged 65, following many years of vegan diet. I decided to return to the diet of my ancestors. Returned to eating meat fish and fowl, home raised eggs, plus copious quantities of dairy straight from the cow, unprocessed. Nearly 80 now and still no more fractures. Have been gradually building bone all this time, so I know it is possible ! I didn't give up all fruit and veg, just switched to mainly animal foods. Low in refined carbs. Doctors were concerned at my decision, so I got checked out first to make sure there was nothing wrong to be causing the bone loss. All was well, so that left only dietary deficiencies as the cause. (In my comment yesterday I was thanking Dr.Petrushevski.. Checked in today and realized I have some information to contribute).

I'm sticking with the diet of my ancestors. Meat. I'm building bone and training jiu-jitsu at 72. Carnivore 1 year and no arthritis anymore.

I’m a 62 yr old female with osteopenia. I have slowed the progression over 3 dexascan especially in my hips. I hope to stop or improve on my next one. Before my change in diet, which is now meat based, one hip had chronic pain over the years. I would take ibuprofen every night so I could fall asleep. I rarely have to take it now.
Besides diet other things I do for bones:
    Exercise daily (various types)
Vibration plate ❤️ it for so many reasons (recovery, pain, bones, etc)
Supplement with all he listed plus certain amino acids including creatine & boron
After listening to Dr Gabriel Lyon, I agree about protein is essential. She is tiny, works out,😅 and consumes about 120 g/day. This is close to my goal.
    Two other things to note:
    1. Boron is another mineral that can help bone strength.
    2. Unfortunately chocolate is high in oxalates. I haven’t given it up…yet.

Great talk, pulling a lot of different things together. After limiting salt intake for years, I found I needed to add salt to my LCHF diet. When working in a hot climate, I always take electrolytes. Now if only someone could discover a sure-fire way to stop our bodies continuing to make spike protein following the recent medical interventions. I'm taking nattokinase, which seems to help reduce some of my aches and pains.

Its worth noting that fluoride can be counterproductive, as it can lead to calcification of the parathyroid, which can then lead to drawing calcium from the bones into the bloodstream.

It makes sense that caffeine would be an issue for bone mineral density. After all, the homeostatic response to the vasoconstriction induced by caffeine causes our bodies to attempt to lower blood pressure via a lowered release of aldosterone which causes us to lose our electrolytes through our urine stream. Alongside sodium, we will also lose at a minimum potassium and magnesium in response to maintain normal blood pressure because of osmosis (where there is salt water will follow).
With that being said, I will take the epidemiology with a grain of salt, and also replace my electrolytes through supplementation and salting my food to taste. Besides, the way I Make my coffee is I include with it a couple of eggs, blended with whey protein powder, and some natural fats in the form of coconut oil and butter. I also salt my coffee (no sweetener not even stevia).

In terms of the hormonal part of osteoporosis, Mithra Women's Health is currently developing a tissue-selective estrogen that can preserve bone density without increasing breast cancer risk. The FDA recently delayed approval of it because the safety data in endometrial tissue was insufficient, but it'll be really exciting when it finally gets approved.

Thanks for your contribution, but I would comment that the fat is in dairy for a reason. It is necessary for the absorption of minerals, and formation of hormones, for a start. Why would Mother Nature put fat in the milk of all mammals ? We humans think we can improve upon nature, at our peril. If processed dairy can improve our bones, how much better will be unprocessed.

bone and eye health has been the rarely talked about interest of mine since getting glasses in high school / so anything that erodes one, usually erodes the other.
I guess the last big debate for the diet myths is isolated inside this puzzle of proteins. which to me is fundamentally mis-labeled to be described as such.
    plant based.
    animal based.
    seafoods.
    fungi.
the base arguments of it all seem stupid growing up in a medical/surgical background household, we liked to think. and. in Canada .. winters can be long. boring inside, so I became the librarian as well for the wellness center. explored the first 8-bit computing options. well before anyone else. encyclopedias. scrabble. puzzles. cubing. problem solving became a side passion.
the ancient egyptians. they solved everything .. and more. already. 5,000 years ago.
they explored bones. skulls. eyes. internal organs. saw that grains modified bone.
as you say .. bone is constantly living.
this is where most people stop. can’t think past bones as a ridged structure. very binary.
    but. it ain’t. very fluid.
    teeth. live. in. bone.
    that is theirs.
‘ sand box to play in ‘ .. if you will.
that has a very complex ecosystem.
a microbiome of its own. that also communicates with the other ones.
    skin.
    crotch.
    stomach.
    way back.
in the later 1860s .. it was discovered that the stomach can ‘ survive ‘ independently of the brain (as we know it). that has a lot to due with how a coma patient can continue to live. w/o a functional brain.
that means. there are two brains.
    the 2nd one.
    is therefore more important.
in north america .. we kinda treat it like a cast iron furnace. epically stupid. but. well. not far off the mark. for why most are so stupid and brain dead.
    grains. any grains.
    are modifying our metabolical engines.
and opiates are created in digestion.
all kinds of opiates. not just the ones used for medicine. or. recreational fun.
that is why most things referred to as ‘ comfort foods ‘ .. have that name.
    grains effectively are drugging us.
    should be absolutely avoided.
gigantic link to health / longevity / stunting / 9cm shorter expression in twin studies / IQ lower by many points …
hormones ebb and flow over the life of a creature to maintain every structure.
    the protein label.
    has stopped us from thinking.
    deeper.
amino acid profile is the key.
    forget about protein.
    everything has protein.
    so the diet myths
distract us from what is going on there.
    massively.
the food industry. is beyond clueless there. marketing manipulating us.
    food deficiency.
    significantly affects eyesight.
probably all the B-range we have isolated. B-12 and B-6 are often deficient. blurry vision seems to be linked.
different terpenoids and polyphenols can radically blur vision. or increase acuity.
studies here since 2011 on that. much more since legalized. (cannabis contains many many compounds .. endocanabinoid (sp) receptors all over the body), people get hung up on TCH or CBD. forget about those. those are kinda boring.
turns out there seems to be zero carbohydrates in cannabis.
    vs lots in tobacco.
no such thing as an essential carbohydrate.
any carbs the body needs. it can generate.
    same with glucose.
external carbs. this is what ruins bones.
how your teeth get expressed. this is what the mother ate. before you were born.
    fact.
understanding that. started. by dentists in the late 1800s in Canada.
the egyptians. had gold dentistry. back then. amazing knowledge. has been lost.
all grains studied back to the ancient ones are causing inflammation. cause metabolic dysfunction. early death.
    if u value sight.
    avoid them.
heard of a single case. where sight (partial) was returned on a carnivorous diet. will be interesting what else will be found since 2017.
all kinds of miracle recoveries in that camp.
veggies. can debilitate you with plant toxins and oxalates. much to learn yet.
at least 13 significant deficiencies in the veganism camp.
    carnivores.
    no such thing.
    isolated [yet].
    should make everyone pause.
    the digestive system.
    the brain cavity.
    the eye sockets.
    the ears.
    our bones.
    teeth.
    are extremely strong.
    live. inside bone.
teeth can be pulled thru that bone matrix. if constant pressure is applied. glacially slow.
    my older brother.
    had molar reversal stuff.
    done to him.
    no surgery.
    took years.
I had a lower jaw that was too small.
had braces to modify the structural bite.
took years. or. could of had it broken. rewired. I chose the long painful route.
broke bones. many times in my life. accidents. ugh. holy sh!t. not fun.
the pharohs. they explored modifying skulls.
    king tut.
new synthetic imaging techniques have shown us .. what he might have looked like.
    the japanese. explored foot binding.
no one that cares about health should view grains as healthy.
a very key ‘ invention ‘. to have a tiny, storage system of energy. that allowed humanity to trudge, travel long distances. not starve.
    but. not starving. vs thriving.
that is where we should all be looking.
forget about cost. taste. any of that.
raising animals for food has taught us so much over the last 11,000 years.
unless the amino acid profile is full (what is considered full. by our peanut sized brains anyhow), we fall apart. this ‘ essential amino acid list ‘ .. vs non essential. will be what I explore in my retirement.
seems like the ‘ balanced diet ‘ is an old last millennium bunch of nonsense that we should all forget.
    causes harm.
    wild animals.
    don’t get obese.
the US .. in the Nixon era. looked to find some way to make food scarcity a thing of the past. but. they did everything wrong. that view has been a disaster.
very much linked into this word protein.
    human beings are omnivores.
herbivores have very different internal structure. and. teeth to match.
any diet myth that needs ‘ supplements ‘. is foolish beyond belief. no way in hell we could have gotten to the 21st century w/o domestic animals. by our side.
one day. being ‘ mostly or fully plant based ‘ will be absolutely illegal.
cheers from the Great White North.

I have very good experience with a carnivorous diet that includes organ meats and bones. If you cook bones in a pressure cooker for a few hours, they become soft like butter and can be eaten without any problems. I wonder why this type of diet is not recommended anywhere? What could be better for building bones than bones? And as we know, bone marrow was at the beginning of our evolution: If Lucy hadn't started breaking bones with stones to eat the bone marrow - we wouldn't exist. Why don't bones play a role in our nutritional recommendations? Even for carnivores, consuming bones is never recommended. We have been using fire for 1 million years. This means that we have had the technology to make bones digestible using heat for a very long time.

I eat now a lot of meat, eggs, cheese, fat, a little vegetables, low carb always. I have all alkaline in my body, urine above 6, saliva 7. Thats what make glucose in your body it is acidic! And minerals make your body alkaline, not food. Thats why animal food is not acidic.

It simply doesn't matter what the pH of the food you eat is. It all goes into a stomach with very low pH of between 1.5 and 3.5, and then the pH is brought back up to between 7.0 and 9.0 when entering the small intestine.
And that's completely independent of the circulatory system, which has it's own Ph regulation.
