In my former community in the suburbs, they'd rather turn the empty buildings into luxury condos for the wealthy. We have tons of abandoned, empty strip malls, that with a little capital, some expedited changes in zoning laws and hard work, would work well as affordable housing.

Not the same at all. He had to work for everything in that story and in the end through all his trials he triumphed and became a successful businessman. In this case this man was just handed a large sum of money. Not saying that is bad, it is awesome that people wanted to help this single father. They just aren't the same though.
