    I started playing in 1985. I was 15. I'd been playing for about 2.5 years when I met a kid who'd become a very good friend. He had been playing for a little over a year on an exact same Kramer. He was a complete virtuoso. Was unbelievable to see him progress day by day. He blew past me like a Top Fuel dragster. I played on that guitar daily but it wasn't like him. Within a year he was getting very proficient at all things Yngwie. It's been 35+ years and I still can't play Yngwie. Oh, well. There's always Poison. 😁

    Awesome guitar. I bought mine new with maple body literally the day the EVH ad came out. Had to wait weeks for it to arrive. Most expensive thing as a kid I ever bought. Still have it and still sounds great.

    Funny thing about that advertisement, he didn’t play a Baretta. The guitar in that pic is not his 5150. The 5150 had a Pacer body, unslanted pickup, the neck was based on one of the Frankie necks, and the headstock was the banana based on his Destroyer, which itself was based on a Explorer. It most definitely was not a Baretta. The Kramer 84 is based on that 5150, not so much the Baretta.

    I ordered one of these when I was 16 and when it arrived the the headstock was just changed to a black pointy style. The guitar also had the wide neck, schaller tuners,maple body and came with a Duncan JB pickup. I remember waiting months for the guitar to arrive especially because I ordered it in white but it was an amazing guitar that I used for years and really regret selling it.

    I tried The 84 (alder body) against the Barretta reissue (maple body). Both very nice, I have a slight preference for the 84 with the alder body, the tone is more “compressed” slightly on the Barretta reissue and lighter and more ergonomic on the 84. It stands up well to an EVH single pickup striped series and has a coil split. EVH 5150 has a neck pickup but no coil split. But...it’s made for a single style of music. The EVH 5150 series has a neck pickup. At the end of the day, my favorite was the original Pacer Deluxe HSS made in Neptune, NJ. I could get tones from EVH to Stevie Ray from it.

    • @waylong25
      @waylong25 3 года назад

      Agreed, we need the grail headstock back. This was the peak version of the banana head. The new ones are either too short and stumpy looking (ala the Baretta Vintage and Special) or TOO huge (ala the 84). GRANTED, the '84 is meant to be the EVH thing where his had that headstock but I just don't like it unless it's a 5150, then and only then is that huge headstock acceptable. In my own opinion, of course.

    I have an original baretta I picked up used at a local guitar store back in 1991 for $150 with original hard shell case. I bought it because of well you know.. Eddie. The pickup wasn't original, had a duncan jb in it, found an original schaller pickup with the right date code. At the time I did t really like the cream color on it so I had it painted burgundy. Yeah dick move. Didn't know it was going to be worth good money later on. Its in perfect shape so some day I'll have it put back to its original color.

I originally purchased it (with the original case) for $800 dollars in January of ‘84. But I’ve been toying with the idea of spray painting it to look like Eddie’s 5150 Kramer striped model from the 1984 / 5150 era. What do you think?
