@34boo buy them used, the newest model isn't nearly as good as the old ones. They changed then this year, and they cut alot of the quality out of them.
I'm 66 next month. Have had 4 sportsters. My first was a all stock 66 that we put octagonal steel struts on. Then found a 60 chop in the papers for 1k came in 21 boxes. 90% done and it burned down in a fire. 30+ years of other obligations later, I have 2. A 2006 883L that has been blown out to something. And a 1999 1200c with 5.4k miles on it. Both are carborated so I'm not up for the newer stuff. Medical problems keep me from the big bikes but my lil sportys are the cats meow.
I try to watch most sporty content. On the other hand I try to get as much ride time as I can. I have 6.2k in the 2 bikes I have. And here they are worth more. good deals are going to be harder to find now sporsters aren't the same. Time will tell. You be safe in your neck of the woods too sir...
I reached out to the dealership where I got 883 to see if they could contact old owner to see what exactly was done. At 95+ ( on a closed course ) it starts the death wobble, so I can't max it out. Have more then a third of throttle left. Does 40 ft rolling second gear burn outs easy. They told me it was stage 1

I bought a 59 650 Triumph for 400 dollars in 1999. It was in worse condition than that Sportster. I put 1500 in it and sold it for 3500. The only thing I didn't tear apart was the spokes!! The rest of the bike was down to examine every part. Granted I painted it myself with rattle cans, but still it was a good runner.
I've been working on my 85 ironhead, had to replace stator, voltage regulator and primary cover. But I believe I messed up the clutch hub bearing because when I get things adjusted the clutch lever is jammed up, and I noticed the clutch hub on your project walks around like mine. Thank you for your videos, it's been a big help.
I'm with you on the practicality of trying to turn an older 883 over to make a slim profit margin. You are correct that they just don't go for much money in the state we reside in. In the Greenville area the newer 883's are round 3k in excellent condition according to their owners. Of course I'd love nothing more than watching you get her all repaired and in good working and riding order and making someone a new proud owner of that Sportster! I'm sure one of your followers would love owning that bike! Keep wrenching and riding, and stay safe! Peace
Yeah I won't turn a huge profit on this, but it'll be a little extra money, and makes for good videos haha! I would love for a viewer to end up with it, a viewer bought that 85 sporty I flipped a while back, we've stayed in touch as he has finished the project and I'll have him and the bike back on the channel soon
I have that same bike in a '95. I love it, just right for my small guy build. 883's don't the love they should, but that's OK with me, it makes them more affordable.
Awesome video awesome find at 64 I've always loved Sportsters and currently own several have to say 883 is my favorite it's worth saving I know that not everybody appreciates the 883 but there are a few that do personaly I would save it but that's just me anyway thanks for the great video
Looking at the clutch release assembly I'm thinking that was the culprit. Very possible the basket itself grenaded too.. Either way, it's all toast now!
Usually just Facebook marketplace, I will usually let people know on here that a bike is for sale, but it's hard when folks might be watching from the other side of the country
good luck on your project whichever direction you opt to take. i like these disassembly videos because they demonstrate how to do something without having to decipher the overly complex engineerspeak of repair manuals. you're probably right about how much you'll be able to flip that bike for, most of those 883s seem to go for around $2500. if the engine is strong you should make your $700 investment back easily. btw, i'm the dick who said you should have offered the guy $350 when you bought it. that wasn't meant as a criticism of your intelligence or ability to assess value, it's just the issues with the bike were numerous and sometimes a project becomes a money pit that isn't financially viable. i don't know how easily 883 parts sell on ebay or marketplace, but i've sold alot of non motorcycle items on both forums and sometimes things don't move very quickly or don't command the price you're seeking. anyway, i hope this doesn't create offense. i like your channel and respect what you're doing.

@@buttcrackcycles yeah it happened to my 2018 1200 the spring plates snapped apart and had the little bearing rolling around inside the clutch basket. I replaced it with the Barnett extra plates kit
IMHO, there is money to be lost if you get the 883 running. Part it out would be my suggestion. I am like you, I like the old stuff, I have several Iron heads and two Shovels and an Indian, and a few others. I enjoy your Channel.
If you restore it for your personal collection you’ll have material for content. If you sell it you could make a few hundred dollars. If you part it you’ll make more but over a longer period of time. Making it decent to ride to sell, you’ll lose money but not time if you film the rebuild as content. My goal is to make my hobby a business where it pays for itself.
I'm definitely not keeping it, I think selling it running and rideable, though still a project, I'll turn a small profit. And someone will leave with a good start to a bike. Anyways we'll see what happens, thanks for watching and dropping a comment

Sounds like you're on the right path, the lever on this was really stiff and won't move so probably a similar situation

What did the clutch plates look like? Wondering if the metal came from the stupid factory spring plates disintegrating.
