- We headed down to the Forest of Dean to attend the annual Steel is Real demo day. Here in the UK the steel bike industry is thriving, with some of the best machines in the world produced. It was great to see all the weird and wonderful bikes on offer and being demo-ed for the day.

I have a Production Privee Oka. Awesome steel beast. It's good to see real bikes making a come back. All the technology and materials can't replace feel.
Some great quality craftsmanship there👍, great stuff Jim.
The Curtis hardtail bikes are just gorgeous. Saving my pennies to buy one.
👌
Went to Steel is Real last year and it was wetter than an Otters pocket. It was a fun day though and was nice to meet the people who make the bikes. I ended up buying a Cotic Solaris Max after trying it out, it was a close call between that and a Stanton. Missed it this year as working when it was on. Definitely worth going if you want to try some bikes out before buying.
Great video nice to see and hear these brands all together
Cool hey!
Blooming lovely that blog jim !!!...my mind is made up for a a new steel frame...great job mate !!
Feeling a bit sick now having just bought a carbon bike. I really want a steel one now. I find it interesting a lot of these guys are running cane creek/öhlins suspension.
Some beautiful bikes there along with some wonderfully weird looking contraptions, British steel at its best 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Great video Jim. Lovely brazing.
Thanks, yeh it was my first go at brazing!! 🤣
That was really good mate!
🙏
I’m still running a steel team Marin from the 90’s. Converted it to a soft nose when pace started making forks. Now has RockShox forks, dropper post, xtr 11x2, tubeless tyres, it’s become part of me. Cannot bear to part with it
I feel the same way about my Fat Chance Yo Eddy. The only frustrating thing is I have a 1 in steerer so finding a fork to fit it has been impossible. I want to build a new rear wheel to upgrade to 8 speed with a free hub instead of the old school 7 speed free wheel. Other than that, I don’t see the need to change anything else. It’s still an amazing XC bike.
@@keirfarnum6811 You could definitely get a frame builder/repairer to braze in a new headtube to 1 1/8th , 44mm or tapered etc.
I'm having this done to a wonderful steel cyclocross bike I have that I can't easily get forks & headset bearings for in 1 inch.
@@keirfarnum6811 you can get a different steerer tube pressed into a more modern fork intended for 1.125". A steel tube reduced to 1" or welded/brazed inside of a 1.125" would work. It would be wacky custom but your options are limited for 1" suspension forks that aren't 25+ years old or low end garbage.
Got me a Cotic RocketMax and love it!
Lot's of great bikes there that day, out of the bikes I tried, the Stanton Switch9er probably felt the smoothest, Cotic FlareMax probably had the best ride position. I really wanted to try the Swarf Cycles full susser though, beautiful looking bike.
Gutted I couldnt make it, cant wait for the next one!!
For British-built steel frames (of all sorts), I can highly recommend Shand Bikes. Not cheap, by any stretch of the imagination, but beautiful hand-built frames.
That gulf coloured bike looks well nice, not sure which one i like more though, the white version or the blue version hanging up
King headset with a cane creek fork on the bar, something soo wrong seems soo right
Cheers
My old steel 26-er got nicked about 6 months ago. Was determined that any replacement was also going to be steel - found an excellent deal on a Ritchey P-650B, which I've just built up and fallen in love with. My brother's got a "fancy" Specialized carbon frame, and it's bloody horrible by comparison!
YES- A Canfield made the Video!
🙏🙏
When i think that my grandfather was one if only a handful of custom steel frame builders in England in the 70s. It was almost a dead craft Its definitely different now.
Got btr ranger it a right bike
BTR and Curtis.
There is that 👌
What was your favourite (other than Stanton 😉) that you saw/rode?
Didn't ride any, but gotta be Production Privee FS
@@PinnedTV they have some FINE lookin bikes! 👌🏼
Hot cakes lol you drop hot coals
Yeh, I was laughing when editing it!!
