nellore andhra restaurant, vijay kitchen, brookefield, whitefield, bengaluru, andhra meals, fish curry, chepala pulusu, fish fry, vegetarian bhojanam, rr chilli chicken, mutton pepper ghee roast, biryani, chicken fry biryani, nellore, small business
With a culinary lineage that goes back to Hotel Manju, supposedly the first table-service restaurant in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh in the sixties, Sashidhar Reddy and his wife, Vijayalakshmi, moved to Bengaluru from Nellore little over a year ago to open Vijay Kitchen, to serve dishes made to traditional family recipes. I visited this modest eatery set in the ground floor of their home in the suburb of Brookefield, where I not only savoured a delicious Andhra Bhojanam but also caught the making of an iconic Nellore Chepala Pulusu, a sour and spicy fish curry. Hope you enjoy this episode. Take care, stay safe and happy eating.
Plate Rice Meals
Served on a banana leaf tray, the rice meals is a simple but satisfying affair that consists of two vegetables, one dry and the other moist, a sambar, rasam and a nourishingly tasty pappu to keep company with the anam (steamed rice) and flavoured rice. There is also a sweet to round off the meal.

Chepala Pulusu (Sour and Spicy Fish Curry)
Made by his wife, Vijayalakshmi, to a recipe that goes back to Sasidhar Reddy’s grandmother, the Chepala Pulusu is a must-try here. A sour and spicy affair, the fish curry is made the evening before, thereby allowing for the fish to soak up the vivacious character of the tamarind, raw mangoes, chilli powder and the secret fenugreek spice blend.
Rs. 180 (usd 2.5)
10/10
Mamdikaya Royyalu (Mango Prawns)
A tangy preparation that juxtaposes fresh flavours of shrimp to the tart fervour of raw mangoes. Taste it with the annam (rice) to tone down some of its tangy flavours.
Rs. 250 (usd 3.4)
9/10
Chepala Fry (Fish Fry)
Chinese pomfret or lake pomfret naped in a pleasant masala; the skin is fried to a crisp.
Rs. 150 (usd 1.4)
7/10
Royyalu Avakkai
A spicy, homemade prawn pickle that makes for a great combination with steaming hot rice.
8/10
Mutton Pepper Ghee Roast
The meat is moist and juicy, coated with coarsely ground pepper and tossed in the buttery lushness of ghee. The meat is cooked twice, first a roasted fry with masala, and then tossed around in hot ghee.
Rs. 250 (usd 3.4)
9/10
RR Chilli Chicken
This dish should come with a ‘chilli hotness’ warning! Not for the faint-hearted, there is little else in this dish other than the chicken and tonnes of green chilli. The result is a unique taste that’s fiery at first but also the sort that endears itself once you get past the ‘suffering’! If you like it toned down, tell them so and they will toss it in some ghee.
Rs. 150 (usd 1.4)
8/10
Chicken Fry Biryani
A dish that was introduced as a means to consume leftover biryani rice, topped with chicken fry, the chicken fry biryani today is more popular than the Nellore biryani here. One can taste the warming flavours of the biryani spices in the kushka, the rice, that makes for a great combination with the robust tomato-onion rich masala of the chicken fry.

@Sarran BiggerBen Dude I just tried to divert his words into a humourous way. I absolutely agree with your words. I have eaten great foods of Andhra and bad foods too... I had very bitter experience with those hotels in highways of Andhra and Andhra PG's in Bengaluru.
To be honestly I was paying 8K per month for a 2 sharing room, still I got disappointed

Our Andhra People are Best in Hospitality ❤❤
I repeat Best..
We are from Nellore. We don't precook anything, including oil. We don't add garlic. After adding all ingredients including fish we start cooking. Finally just before putting off stove we sprinkle mustard seed powder and Fenugreek seed powder. One thing is correct. Have it next day. Awesome.
White shirt n chepala pulusu.. He's a legend 😄
When that aunty added water to scrape the last bits of masala into the mix, I was taken back 20 years to my mom's kitchen. Moms know to stretch every rupee and every belly.

What is liked with this video is that you have been correcting and guiding the owners to use the Telugu names than using the English translation of the same. Love you for that. Hope the Telugu guys start proudly use the Telugu names to the preparations they do.

Understated fact about curd/yogurt- No one can achieve a flavour balance in their perugu like the telugus

The great thing about Kripal is... he becomes a kannadiga when he eats the kannada cuisine, becomes teluguite when eating telugu food, mallu when mallu and tamil when tamil. It's not easy... that's why we love you☺️
