Daniel Ziblatt, Harvard political scientist and coauthor of The New York Times bestseller, “How Democracies Die,” discusses how we can look to a wide range of historical and global examples, from 1930s Europe to contemporary Hungary, Turkey, and Venezuela, to the American South during Jim Crow to show how democracies die-and how ours can be saved. Professor Ziblatt’s talk is followed by a panel of Suffolk scholars -Brian Conley, Greg Fried, and Renee Landers - and is be moderated by Acting Provost Sebastian Royo.

I have to say that his idea that party selection systems are the gatekeepers of democracy misses the very salient point that they also keep out reformers who are the release valve which prevent populists in the first place. The example of Bernie Sanders comes to mind.

Absolutely, Nancy. I bet even the authors would have been stunned by Jan 6th and the present outrage of Trump stealing top secret docs and squirreling them away at Mar-A-Lago for his personal use. But they were prescient in the fact it shouldn't just be about Trump, which may be understandable but the subject of too much emphasis, but Trumpism itself and the perpetual slide the Republican Party has been on since Gingrich's take no prisoners, scorched earth political policy in the 90's. Trump could die tomorrow, but the evil precedents and norms he's instilled in the party will remain. The party has been increasingly authoritarian, but under Trump that exploded. The goal of current Republicans is to stack Congress, state governorships and legislatures with Trumpian stooges who will codify a one-party system where Republicans win every time, and when they don't will have the power to simply not accept the result and install who they want. That's not democracy. That's dictatorship under the veneer of fake democracy like in Putin's Russia, Erdogan's Turkey and Maduro's Venezuela, where they supposedly have "free and fair" elections but everyone knows they're rubber-stamped to have the controlling party win every time.

Democracy defined (in the Reality Asserts Itself sense). Some walk between the raindrops, some are sought for spoil and prey. Some gather to gawk, some circle like sharks in chummed waters, some walk on by. Governments are instituted to codify, adjudicate and enforce the arrangement. Have a nice day.

Lalo wasn’t corrupt he was far to idealistic for the far right & once he was released the prosecution was side by side w Bolsenaro
The strongest economy was under Lalo & we can b so lucky that leftist Govt’s r left alone after 100 years + of American destabilisation for the benefit of corporate interests

Agree - it was established as a Republic. Plato and the founding fathers understood the results of democracy.
