My guess is 42 piglets. Started watching your guys about 3 months ago. We bought 150 acres 2 years ago and I have no background in farming and as of 1 month ago, there were no animals on the farm. Your videos have inspired me to jump in with both feet and I now have 12 feeder pigs, 3 breeder pigs with one set to farrow in June. All Berkshire. I also have 75 laying hen in the brooders now with my first 30 broiler chicks due next week. In June we will also be starting our cattle herd with 7 Red angus heifers and 6 black angus steer. With more broilers chicks and turkeys coming in June also. Our farm is growing very quickly and I’m loving every minute of it. We here at “Valley Farms”, want to say thank you for taking the time to produce these videos and share your wisdom and knowledge with all things farming. We are more then excited about our future here on our new farm. Thank you!!
Took my 2 Berkshire pigs to the butcher yesterday. Raised them for about 7 months. They were my first pigs I've ever owned. It was a big learning experience, but overall very easy. The only real issue we had with them was once they got bigger they would scratch against the water nipples and break them. Went to a trough watering system for the last few weeks. Next go around we will look at how to protect the nipples so they can't do that again.
Have you ever had to train a grown adult pig on electric? We had no choice but to keep our first couple in a large pen last year. Now we are hoping to get them more space with electric fencing. Our boar is not having it. He got shocked twice and decided to run right through a hog panel to get back to the old pen. The other sow elected to stay but doesn’t want budge outside of a 20 square foot area
43 piglets. Piglets are very cute. Sondra, I hope you feel better soon! Allergies or cold? Pasture grass spring flush has sprung, looks great! Time to speed up the cattle moves to keep up with it now. Grass is just greening up and starting to grow in the PNW. Spring is cold & wet so far, still in the high 30’s at night and high 40’s low 50’s day. I’ve always been told to be very careful with grazing cattle on Sudan grass due high probability of Nitrate toxicity. There is specific height requirements of at least 18” & over to safely graze & no grazing it during & coming out of a frost for a few weeks after or during drought.
Your experience helped me force my gilt into her hut two nights ago as it began to rain! I had to lock her in as she was trying to nest outside. She gave birth to 10 all alive inside her hut. I hurt for your situation but it helped me! Thank you for your continued example and sharing the ups and downs!
I am sorry to hear about you losing those piglets. I can tell you are both pro's by the way you are handling it. I am sure its frustrating, but if you are a farmer you lose animals, there is no way around it.
Hey , I was wondering what you connect the single strand of electric to in front of the electric netting ? Separate posts ?? I like the 6 paddocks with shade trees....pigs can handle cold far better than heat...my guess 37 piglets....Thanks !
Looks like Sondra is upset with you for not taking the pregnant sow to the barn so the piglets could have survived. Her face is worth a thousand words when you do the close-up on her. My prediction for total piglets 43
My guess is 42 piglets.
