I agree, this is by far the best scene in the fact that so much was communicated by the 2 actors to each other of their love and regard for one another without saying one word. Of course, the 2 cliff scenes are right behind this! Bravo to both actors! Thank you Susan for making this video, so we can watch this over and over--its hard to get enough of it!

Yes, yes, yes, yes !!! This is precisely what I was thinking the whole time. Exquisite! You can even see Alexander leaning in and wanting to kiss her. Charlotte understood his intent right away and held his hand, which was just as meaningful as a kiss in those days. Though she was not meant to educate him he ended up being the one learning the most.

The 3rd scene, I love it! It is so quiet on the outside, but there is a torment in their souls. He wants to kiss her, but also respects her decision and decides not to do that. She sees his sadness, takes his hand and then we see her soul speaks to his soul: "I love you. Wait a little more. I will solve this and I will come to you." And there's a little smile on his lips and "good night" instead of "goodbye". His soul understood. Brilliant!

I was skeptical about seasons 2 and 3 after the departure of Sydney, but you know, this has been a wonderful conclusion. I love it and cannot stop watching it. What a great job everyone did. The music (I am a violinist) has been absolutely fantastic. Mr. Colbourne had a hard act to follow and he is really a better match for Charlotte in the end…just my opinion.

This is such a bittersweet scene. While no words are spoken you can feel their deep love for each other and also the pain and ache they feel since, as far as they both know, she is betrothed to Ralph. Xander has already professed his love for her but is helpless because he cannot do anything to change things. The music bespeaks the heartache.

Young ladies at that time NEVER made any overt gestures to men, they always had to wait for the men to say and do things, so when Charlotte takes Xander's hand, that is HUGE! She's telling him " I love you. Wait for me...I've got to let Ralph down easily."

I just knew that on this trip with Mr. C, Charlotte knew in her heart she could not marry Ralph. That lingering, loving look at the door, and when she took his hand, I knew it was all over but the shouting! And how Ralph did not see that, even with the buggy in the way, is beyond me. 😅

I am looking at this series for the 6th time and I am using my PBS membership to do so right to the very end. I will be looking at the end tomorrow even though I have seen it over and over again. Come on people let's demand a sequel. Mr Davies is a genius and so is Justin. Give us more please.

And the scene in front of Trafalgar House, wow - the depth of what CH and AC are feeling at that moment goes straight to my little heart - such amazing acting skills from all parties - Thank you again Susan for all those scene gems! ❤ - and chapeau to RW and BLH!

  • @caelum860

Listen to the music in each of these three clips. The exact same melody. The four gentle chimes (harp?) with the underlying cello(?) and the violin joining in… gradually building to that last scene where it grows even more. It’s certainly musical symbolism, but of what?
Maybe that Charlotte is becoming increasingly conflicted in regards to marrying Ralph? That she is coming around to SEE her beliefs (“young women should marry whoever they want”), and how it conflicts with her actions (intention to marry Ralph regardless). And so then calls off her wedding only a matter of hours later.
I also like the fact that Xander seems to be challenging her whilst being respectful of what she wants. Asking if returning to Willingdon in front of Ralph is what she wanted - knowing full well that she didn’t; hoping that she would realise that she was lying to herself.
Then especially in this episode. When he talks to Augusta - whilst looking at Charlotte “I must beg you to reconsider if this is what you truly want… a young woman should marry whoever she wants, instead of what her parent or guardian decides for her.”
And then, of course, the first scene in this little video. All he’s doing is telling her what she’s told him - but also mentioning her own marriage (“just as I must respect yours”).
And then the second scene, when Charlotte talks to Augusta about how her heart will heal. The way Xander pays attention to the conversation, the way he reacts to her saying it will one day be a distant memory, the way he’s watching her. When she finally looks back at him, it’s almost like he’s asking if that’s what she really wants with them. And she looks away, flustered - still conflicted.
And finally, they arrive back. The way he almost kisses her but holds back, trying to respect her wishes. But then she reassures him by holding his hand - which as mentioned in other comments, is almost an equivalent of a kiss back in those times. Charlotte is the one who breaks the moment, but I suspect that by this time, she was resolute to break off her marriage. Just watch her facial expression later on when it’s mentioned that Ralph is still there.
Note that this all happened within 24 hours, and by the end, she had called off her wedding.

It seemed like maybe Charlotte was telling Augusta, that the agony she was feeling, was how Charlotte had felt after losing Sydney and how she has recovered from that now. She surely has not let go of, or gotten over Colburn though. She looks at him after like, oh, maybe I shouldn't have said that. I wonder if that's why she tries to reassure him with the hand hold after. (To let him know that she didn't mean that she has let go of him. Also, not wanting to separate.) She can't do much before breaking things off with Ralph though.
